i like the way holly wood trys to brain wash people they dont say it but they give the impression that the great escape was by armerican prisoners yet out of the escapists not 1 was armerican should use british actors least they look the part.
@ VirgilHilts1944: I really hope you don't think all these characters were actual people. There was no Real Captain Hilts or Real Ashley Pitt. With the exception of a few, they were all composite characters, meaning that in order to make a film like this, they had to combine multiple people into one. There were more than 250 people in that camp, as I'm sure you're aware. there was no huge firing squad for the 50. They were murdered in small groups or one at a time.
Ashley-Pitt saved lives of Sandy MacDonald and Bartlett Big X, by sacrificing and shooting Gestapo agent Kuhn. But after MacDonald and Big X makes a run for it in Ebersbach, South Eastern Germany in year 1944, May 15, they are caught and shot later with Cavendish and others. Total 50 executed.
there were no Americans in the camp, the character Steve Mcqueen plays was a Czech that's why when all the POWs went back to the camp 60 years afterwards they booed when Steve came on.
Just another example of Americans changing history to suit themselves
if you read the writing at the beginning of the original movie - you see that all the characters are fake, however every other detail is as precise as possible.
hEROES ALL, MY GREAT UNCLE, WAS IN PATTON'S 3RD ARMY, ONLY TWO SURVIVED IN HIS PLATOON, HE NEVERF TALKED ABOUT THE WAR. BRAVE MAN,,,,......MAY HE REST IN PEACE
Thats cool man, my great-grandfather, Jerzy T. Mondschein was part of the 50 who were executed by the Gestapo on the personal orders of Hitler. He was the only one who spoke German in the group. Since he did fight for Germany in WW1, but when Hitler took power, he fled to Poland and fought in they're air force in WW2. Look him up, and I'll look up Dennis Cochran.
the musicvideo only shows the sad parts mainly some happy parts so i think it fits i have never seen the movie so after watching thisi guessed it wasabout the powsbeing tortured, killed, dieng when they almost madeit and yet never giving up
is disagree with yyou martinsuper73 the actors had fun making this video and it was like a great adventure for them an dlike charitys on tv this music is depressing with this video
Don't think this song really fits this movie. Don't get me wrong, both the song and the movie are awesome, but the movie seemed more happy and funny and was more about the PoWs never giving up. This song sounds somewhat depressing, which I think contrasts the tone of the whole movie. Nevertheless, great movie and song altogether!
I first saw this movie when I was a very young girl (I watched it with my dad). It still amazes me that I not only sat through it but loved it and never forgot it. I don't know if it was because of my time with my father or if the movie was that good but this brought back some very pleasant memories. Thanks for posting - it's a lovely video.
Actually this is based on a true story about the Americans fighting along with the RAF (Royal Air Force) during the early part of the War 2 and we continued until the end of the War... they were also along the Americans in Bataan. Also the tunnel was known as the "Tower of Babel." During this film, the survivors of Luft III commented on the set that the nightmares were coming back because of they way the Germans treated them! This song really touches me because it matches their story!
you are wrong in this movie was james garner and steve mcqueen and played americans soldiers and steve mcqueen was pilot in the movie. IN STALAG FIVE....
What he meant was that in the real escape no americans were involved at all as the american airman were housed seperate in an adjacent camp, yet the movie shows the main characters to all be americans .
The best, best, best movie ever! Well and the saddest. :(
I love the cast, and WHAT a cast... Steve McQueen, James Garner, Richard Attenborough, Charles Bronson, Donald Pleasence, James Coburn, David McCallum, Gordon Jackson, John Leyton, James Donald... everyone of them was specially and much better than the guys who try to be (Hollywood) stars today!
