Charley Rose, a historian, and John McCallum's Survey of Old Timers, (survey of a group of historians and writers), rated Marciano at #8 and #9 of greatest Heavyweights of all time.

None of the ratings have Rocky higher than 6th.

Experts have called Rocky wild and crude. Mohammad Ali would have taken him apart.

the very least that can be said is that rocky was one of the greatest champions in history.pin point assertions well above and beyond that imo are speculative.others have asserted his foes were small,old,and unremarkable and,on that point i must agree.This happens in boxing alot,and is not rocks fault,he ducked no one.

people who think rocky had no power and is overrated need to research him first and actually look into the facts. he nearly killed roland lastarza. his punch was scientifically measured to have enough energy to spot lift 1000 pounds 1 foot off the ground: more power than an armour peircing bullet. he had to train with a custom built 300 pound heavy bag because the one normal heavweights use (150-200 pounds) didn't have enough resistance for him to train properly with it! this guy ended careers

@RayPFP walcott lost a lot of his early fights and infact with some basic research you can see that he reached his peak just before he fought with rocky. the "old man" was in excellent shape and far heavier than the rock. i have watched the entire fight and the momentum was with rock in the second half until he eventually managed to land the knock out blow. the fact that he got up and then went 13 rounds proves his conditioning, the fact walcott was out cold proves his explosive power.

@RayPFP you are letting this age thing confuse you; perfect example is what george foreman was able to do when he came back! out of 49 fights he only failed to knock out 6, that's not a bad record. some men are un-knockoutable look at the ali/wepner fight and it's nothing to do with size my boy, it's a little something called chin and heart, something a lot of boxers seem to be lacking these days. he knocked out 43 men either way you look at it.

Big George was a freak of nature that retained his power even in old age. Walcott never had the power of Foreman. Foreman is the hardest hitting heavy ever. Walcott wasn't.

@RayPFP louis i admit was past his prime, but lets not forget that we are talking about probably the best heavyweight who ever graced the ring. he had a huge amount of experience behind him and he was hungry too because he was in poverty at the time. ezzard charles was also one of the greatest fighters of all time who peaked late like walcott (if you bother to research the facts he was not loosing a lot before the marciano fight either)

@RayPFP there is no point arguing though, everyone is entitled to have an opinion. marciano was a great champion either way, you don't get to be heavyweight champion of the world for nothing. this man never knew defeat in his pro career. he struggled in his last title defence against archie moore and he did the right thing and retired! he already defended his title six times which proves he could stay at the top. after moore there was hardly anyone worth fighting left that he hadn't smashed!

Marciano had already been a 10 round fighter.Marciano also had 25 pro fights under hisbelt while Vingo 17. Advantage Marciano. Marciano had slick management. Marciano ko over LOuis is overrated. Just 2 fights prior Marciano couldn't put a dent in 11-14 tomato can Applegate. Marciano couldn't put a dent in Lowry twice, and Applegate. Lowry weighed in at 177 and was an ex middle with 67 losses .Marciano said himself he couldn't ko Lowry if he fought hime 100 times. NOw by some miracle he kos Ali? Laughable t o say the least.
