So for him it might be the easiest way to play, or he might be trying to find a different way to play drums by changing the way he holds his sticks. He's in the Mars Volta. He's one of the best single pedal drummers, but their styles are completely different... you can't really compare them. Pridgen is very bombastic and does so much all the time and Portnoy holds back a lot to do minimalistic stuff.

Yeah man, good point. Volta is one of my favorite bands; when I saw them live, Thomas was incredible. He just doesn't pause really, and his grooves were like a bombardment of sound. I think both Pridgen and Portnoy are fantastic drummers, but Pridgen might actually top him in style points.

thomas is incredible, but its not always about who can do the fastest. MP is great at complimenting the entire band. additionally, the amount of times DT changes time signatures never ceases to blow my mind

I've always been a Bruford and Palmer fan but Portnoy is definitely awesome. I don't understand one thing, though: all of his videos on youtube appear as if he's playing along with the record ... in other words, he's miming his own playing. Is this (and other) video a recording of the ACTUAL recording of the track? It just doesn't seem like what we HEAR is what we SEE. I mean, I know that what we hear is HIS PLAYING, but is what we HEAR is what we SEE?

dude trust me i've been in music sence i was born and my brothers a tech and my other brother worked a dream theater show and i've been back stage at shows befor if the artist are their their walking around the town or sleeping on the but then they get together for sound check then they go off again then they go back stage and get ready for the show but their most likely out eating or just walking around the town they can mess with it during sound check but they do have to watch them set it up

You have yet to realize what drumming really is. That list can go on, but they have different focus in terms of drumming. Portnoy's MAIN role is to complement the rest of the band, not show off with 6-stroke paradiddles or w/e. Royster, Gadd, etc, have similar roles, but they also concentrate a lot on techinical solos.
