@brucelee6790 Well it is a ballad hehe. Try to look up Dance Of Eternity, Honor Thy Father, Metropolis, The Great Debate, Scarred, Voices, Lie, The Mirror, Pull Me Under, Take The Time, As I Am, Fatal Tragedy, Learning To Live, or A Change Of Seasons for some awesome drumming and more usage of his huge kit.
Pridgen is good but is just a kid, he still doesnt know how to make a song sound very good like mike. and if you wanna talk about TP i can say better.. Tony royster
Drum isnt just a lot of notes in a song but the notes that make a song
i am big fan of dream theater especially for portnoy's drumming but you have to see Thomas Pridgen he is also very talented although great song and drums
come on, stop arguing about "whose the better drummer" what matters is can you play better than them, dont just compare them and stop saying bad things about them
It shouldn't really matter to be honest I mean its all about what works for you or anybody else. So for him it might be the easiest way to play, or he might be trying to find a different way to play drums by changing the way he holds his sticks. Meh whatever Mike Portnoy owns all and Dream Theater FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
its pretty unique, cause you lose speed, but he gains speed with it and more hitspeed at the same time whitch makes his timing almost incomparable in fills and paradiddles
He's in the Mars Volta. He's one of the best single pedal drummers, but their styles are completely different... you can't really compare them. Pridgen is very bombastic and does so much all the time and Portnoy holds back a lot to do minimalistic stuff.
Yeah man, good point. Volta is one of my favorite bands; when I saw them live, Thomas was incredible. He just doesn't pause really, and his grooves were like a bombardment of sound. I think both Pridgen and Portnoy are fantastic drummers, but Pridgen might actually top him in style points.
thomas is incredible, but its not always about who can do the fastest. MP is great at complimenting the entire band. additionally, the amount of times DT changes time signatures never ceases to blow my mind
This video is the recording of his drum tracks. If at any point you hear something other that what he is hitting this can be explained by the fact that this video was taken during this session, and the session that was recorded as the final product was not video taped. Therefore what you see may only be a "draft" and the complete recording might not have been taped.
I've always been a Bruford and Palmer fan but Portnoy is definitely awesome. I don't understand one thing, though: all of his videos on youtube appear as if he's playing along with the record ... in other words, he's miming his own playing. Is this (and other) video a recording of the ACTUAL recording of the track? It just doesn't seem like what we HEAR is what we SEE. I mean, I know that what we hear is HIS PLAYING, but is what we HEAR is what we SEE?

Portnoy is good but i mean is not that good. neil pert is defenatly way better. his beats are way more technical. portnoy is like every other power metal drummer out there big show drum set that they dont need and to much exposure
dude trust me i've been in music sence i was born and my brothers a tech and my other brother worked a dream theater show and i've been back stage at shows befor if the artist are their their walking around the town or sleeping on the but then they get together for sound check then they go off again then they go back stage and get ready for the show but their most likely out eating or just walking around the town they can mess with it during sound check but they do have to watch them set it up

keep in mind that what you are hearing is the final mix of Train of Thought, so the sound engineer probably made the whole kit sound better than it does live.

Me personally would go with the Sabian over the Zildjian because 1) I think it can compliment more types of music and 2) I think Sabian looks cooler. :)
