amber1974a, This is a Jimmie Davis song recorded in 1935. One of the most popular songs of the period. So popular that Jimmie recorded about a half dozen answer songs to it. Tex Ritter also recorded it around that time.
Wilf Carter does justice to the song more than Merle Haggard IMO.
i was watching a matlock tonight 'the country boy' episode with david carradine as guest star. at the end of the show david and andy were singing this song. i don't think i had ever heard this song. i liked it so much i was moved to see who sang it. i still don't know if wilf carter is the original singer but i do like this version. merle haggard does an awesome job too..
The story i grew up with was my Grandad would come home from the pub and he would frisbee his hat down the hall way if it came back he'd sleep down the river if it stayed he would walk in singing this too my gran. i never met my grandad but his stories brought him to life and i've told my kids they say the same. this song was what i played when my Gran went to rest with him i made sure of that.
I seen the late Great Wilf Carter in 1986 in concert. He was truly great. I am 41 yrs old now and can gladly say that I saw him in person. Loves ya Wilf.
In the intro to The Fate of Ole Strawberry Roan Carter says, "Hey Hank! Throw another log on the campfire and I'll tell you the tale of ole strawberry roan."
my wife & I love all these old time songs -just keep them comming as I know there are 100's probably more like 1000's of listeners out there that like the same kind of music--I can't think of any special, as they are all fantastic. thanx
I LOVE HIM

Personally, I like the Gene Autry version better. I use to have it, but it's gone.
