  • I have to say, this is my new on my new nieces Sesame Street video, and although I am tired of it from hearing it 10000000 times (its by far her FAVORITE DVD...she is mesmerized and smiles through the whole thing)

I never knew what all the fuss was about with Lena Horne.

    I do now.

Her voice is a gift from God.

Rare. Very rare, and she uses that gift with class and style.

  • One of my favorite songs on the Sony 3 disc album but I never saw the performance before. This was just great. Grover is HYSTERICAL and Lena is DIVINE.

  • wow! I love this! I remember this was on "The Stars Come Out on Sesame Street" and I used to listen to it on my red "My First Sony" walkman. lol

  • R.I.P. LENA HORNE!

  • There's no doubt there is a God because without Him, voices like this wouldn't exist.

  • I love the band. It makes me feel warm and fuzzy XD. I feel like a kid in kindergarten again.

  • I know this has been covered already by so many people, but what would our childhood have been if we didn't have sesame street?!?! That was such a magical time in my life, and its sure nice to be able to share it now with my nephews.

  • lol all us that watched this when we were kids in the 70s and 80s watching this and smiling. Missing a simpler time

  • Where oh where are these people who really feel this way and mean it when they ask "how do you do?"

Ahhh....thanks for these memories to the original poster =)

  • i like to lip sync to this song and pretend i have her voice...but of course she's the only one who would ever have that voice

  • There is just no way to know how many kids this segment helped. So many kids lived in loving homes but had stressful school lives like myself were able to watch this and feel like Grover and Lena were right there in the room with them, sharing their hugs and optimism for future friendships. If this doesn't make you want to hug someone you love, you're a ROBOT!

  • Grover is sexy

  • I remember watching this as a little girl. It is beyond precious :)

  • SO FABULOUS!!!!!! CLASS AND TALENT WILL NEVER GO OUT OF STYLE!

  • I love this. So beautiful!

  • I never really get emotional when celebrities, people I've never met pass away. But I was watching this video the other day and I couldn't even get through it because I was almost in tears. Lena was so talented, so elegant, and yet so down to earth. And that smile... Its hard to look at that big, beautiful smile now and not feel a knot in my throat. I'm really going to miss Mama Lena

  • I never thought Sesame Street could teach me such a profound lesson on overcoming shyness...Miss Lena and Mr.Jim,I salute you both.

  • And Miss Horne I love you

  • I love you Elmo but Grover you will always be forevermore my all time favorite...you sweet furry little monster you!

  • The part at 3:32 was shown at the 2010 Emmys.

  • For my generation, this was the first experience with Lena and her music for many of us.

    Yay, Sesame Street!

  • Bite the noise! Bite it!

  • That lady was made for one thing: making magic!

Just showed this to my 1.5 year old son, along with her ABC's song. What a true talent.

    R.I.P.

  • Hello Friends! How do you do?

  • too Cool RIP Lena

  • This video makes my heart smile!

  • One could see the warmth in Lena's eyes and her heart..I would love to use this video to teach children to get over their shyness..R.I.P. Ms. Lena...you deserve it and you certainly were the best...

  • Alicia Keys HAS to play Lena in a movie

  • I love how you can hear the laughter of the people in the studio when Grover says "a good kisser too... my nose knows."

And Lena, of course, is delightful as always. We are lucky to have shared our time with her.

  • The world will be a little bit of a darker place because she is no longer around

  • Eternal voice and legacy

  • I'm going to miss her smile.

  • Classic! I will always remember Lena Horne through her appearances on Sesame Street. RiP

  • R.I.P Lena Horne <3

  • wow this chick is teaching elmo about chicks.

  • R.I.P Lena!

  • She was so great in how she made her presence felt. She wanted people to standup for themselves and believe what they needed to believe. She was such a force to be reckoned with but because of her place in society few recognized her contribution until much later.

  • Lena you will be missed by manny people who loved you very much.. And that beautiful voice you had, well nobody has it........ Singer today don't know how to sing, '''''''''''' THEY THINK THEY SING BUT THEY DON'T''''''...' A lot of good people are going ahead of us. i just saw it on the sesame street 40th Anniversary Box that i bought.

  • I remember seeing the Sesame Street gang perform this song at the Macy's parade, and I didn't know it was on the show before. When I saw this, I flipped. Such a great woman to sing it too!

  • ohhhhhh, sorry baby...I'd say it was about 79-80..right after the Wiz went pop. Maybe 81.

  • Fred Sanford wouldn't like this.

  • I have been searching for this for two years. Thank you for posting it. I have not seen this in at least 30 years.

  • OMG I love that last few seconds!!! I wonder if this was from the original tape, never before seen! I certainly don't remember seeing it before... THANK YOU SESAME STREET for posting these wonderful classic videos!!! You are doing a service to fans young AND old!!! :) :)

  • I love this song it's so cute. Lena Horne has a lovely singing voice I love her so much. I like Gorver too he's a loverble monster. I loved the parts where Lena kisses Grover on the nose. And when Grover said to Lena your a nice lady and a good kisser too I thought that was so sweet of Grover to say that to Lena. I am so happy Joe wrote that song esecially for Lena to sing because Lena has an amazing voice. I wish I could meet Lena I wonder what she's up to now? Lena has shiny brown eyes too.

  • I've seen this clip many times before, but

this time on YouTube, there's an extra 5

seconds of it I didn't see on any of the Sesame Street episodes broadcasted in

its entire run. I guess the very end was cut

about Lena Horne being a "Good kisser".

  • Beautiful :)

  • Joe Raposo wrote this song specifically for Lena to perform.

  • Lena Horne is so beautiful. She always has this sparkle in her eye that touches my heart. Not to mention that goofy Grover is one of my faves...
