I love Anita Baker but I have to make this comment I didn't like her rendition of this song. She chose to use the dialect "mammy" and so many foot soldiers before her had to sing it that way and fought and died so they could sing the song the they wanted to. But in order to even get the beautiful lullaby heard they had to sing in a belittleling dialect. Now I know she can sing anyway she wants but to honor those who fought for more give them back their dignity just in this one beautiful song.

Anita Baker has never tripped my trigger. Her singing style (running her words together, to nasal (singing through her nose). I can think of several artists past and present who could put her to shame Miss NIna Simone could sing circles around her (even from her grave) Now she was a singer.

Nina Simone had an Alto voice, low deep, not in Anita;s register at all, but she had a strong voice, two completely different talents /singers, they cannot be compared to each other at all except for the fact that they were bot Jazz singers, and at that Anita was even more of a traditional Jazz singer. I love them both!

I'm sorry I love toni braxton but she DOES NOT have the same vocal ability as Anita. Toni is a v good singer. Anita is a great singer. They r both alto singers but Anita has a greater vocal range ( just wanna be ur Girl, no more tears). Anita can sing all of Toni's songs. I doubt Toni can sing all of Anitas songs and convey the same emotion and range.

In addition to what has already been posted (Toni Braxton and Jill Scott) I would suggest you give Oleta Adams a try. Very jazzy and off the charts voice - she doesn't get nearly the credit she deserves. She recently released an album you might want to give a listen to.
