@disamjisa Hey put it this way, its a disincentive. By taxing them more, their less likely to smoke 10 packs a week. Less cigarettes = less cancer and more money in your pocket. Smokers shouldn't get diddly squat in reduced medical fees, after all its self inflicted? Why not give that 1 billion to a 3rd world country that actually needs it?

My last point, its better the government brings in money from smokers otherwise their money essentially goes up in smoke.

No one is arguing with reasonable taxation of cigarettes, what they are saying is when cigarettes increase in cost by 15% in one day, that is wrong. Smokers easily pay for their own health costs, and more. If you want to give some money to a third world country on top of what is already, you go ahead.

By smoking

a) your money goes up in smoke as well

b) your health goes up in smoke

Why should they not be taxed? It's a drain on the economy otherwise.

Yeah but you misinterpreted my point, you were arguing that they shouldn't have to pay medical costs, I was simply saying that they can smoke, knowing that it's detrimental to their health, but they shouldn't get some form of rebate or reduced medical costs? By smoking they're accepting that their health will be endangered, willingly, with absolutely no benefit to them. Why shouldn't they have to pay higher taxes because of this? They're a liability.

fast food=unhealthy

but thats the point, you get more benefit out of fast food than smoking.

Lastly not everyone is stupid enough to smoke, accounting for why less people smoke than suffer health related issues to fast food.

The government makes around $5 million in duties on cigarettes. Yet the costs of smoking related illnesses to our public health system runs at around $670 million.
