Slowly trying to get this switched over to a guitar via by ear. I've tried the tabs available and they honestly don't sound right at all. I know there is going to be a major difference in terms of different instruments sounding the same, that's a given. But there is definitely something that sounds off from time to time.
I'd really appreciate if you put this at onlinepianist(dot)com, you can post a tutorial there of this song, its really easy and I'm sure it'd help lots of people. Thanks!
Ok, my mistake about the wrong key, I've just found out that my keyboard was tuned down two semitones, so it's really H-major. But the point about the bass line is still valid -- TM uses inversions for two of the chords.
@EmperadorKhan Wow that's so confusing, compared to the cirle of fifths i'm used to. I thought the "English" way was the only way, i'm just so narrow minded ahaa. Anyway thanks for the insight EmperadorKhan, peace out.
Look for the "Note" article in Wikipedia, there's a comprehensive chart on this issue in the Accidentals section (damn Youtube doesn't let me quote links).
...which is (III-VII-I) instead of (I-VII-IV). So the resulting chords are A/C#-G#m-D/A. The chord pattern alters there a bit, but my point remains the same.
But the 'triplety' part seems fine -- he modulates into H major there.
I know the vid is kinda old and you probably don't care anymore, but, um, have you tried playing your version along with a Tim's recording? Well, I have (a version from his So Fucking Rock DVD and the 'playing at home' clip) and the first four lines (until that triplety part, I haven't gone much further yet) are completely off the key. Judging from your score, you believed it to be in H major, while it's clearly in A major (so two sharps off).
@EmperadorKhan I did play along to a recording (I don't remember which, but it was well before the So Fucking Rock DVD was out), and it was fine. And yeah, the score was crap (I was only 16 when I did it, and it was the first time I'd ever used Sibelius.)

@Nalmond92 If I had it, It's already be online. It really is worthwhile committing to work it out by ear - it's good practise for an important skill to have.
hey, really well done :) i appreciate the chosen camera angle - good stuff.
my only criticism is that it is a little too fast in parts. i tried to use your clip as a karaoke file and ran over my words quite a bit, mostly in the 3/4 sections.
but other than that, superbly played and i enjoyed it very much :) thanks, keep posting!
Great video and site. Made everything a lot easier for us Minchin fans.
I have a pretty well arranged "Inflatable you" for the site if you would like me to send you some details. I'd probably have to send you a video i'm not too good with Sibelius.
So pleased to see this... having piano tuned on Thursday and starting piano lessons and this is the first song I want to learn to play... will update you when I manage it!!! Thanks for posting!
Im not sure if they are on the dvd or not lol :) I can give you my email address or if they are already on youtube, i can download them from there. :) Thanks in advance for your help.
Not bad, a bit to fast and the time signature changes to 6/8 a couple of bars earlier than your version (the fill between the verse and the bridge). Its difficult to spot when tim minchin plays it cos he makes the transition so smooth but it definately does!
Yeah I sing along with virtually every time I play through, but I don't sing for most videos because 90% of the time I have a horrible voice, and it makes it less easy to hear the piano for people learning the songs. And yeah sorry I stuffed up the timing... when I recorded this I hadn't quite got it right.
Ah, oh well. Mibbe just sing in your head then. :P Thanks for making the videos anyway, you're the only person on the whole of the internet, seemingly, apart from RowanFM (I think that's his name), who has been so kind as to do so. :P
Heh, thankies fer making this video, i've only been playing Piano for 6 months *if we disregard the 4 years playing Electronic Keyboard*, and this song has just inspired me to carry on learning, thanks! :D
You have helped me so much with Tim Minchin's music, and you're so incredibly talented! Thank you, once I have some money I'd love to donate to your site :]
That makes two of us then. Nice job transcribing it then, the lack of perfect pitch kind of makes it even more impressive lol
I started transcribing this a few months ago but I remember that after about an hour an very little stuff written down I decided to just let Tim do the playing haha. I could write it out if I was really keen, but meh, you've done it for me anyway?! lol (I'll try and throw some money your way when I get around to downloading them. How much were you originally charging?)
Thankyou for posting :) Im thinking of singing this 2 my boyfriend on our 3 year anniversary :D

@EmperadorKhan I Don't Mean To Sound Out Of Place But What's "H-Major"? I Thought It Only Went To G-Major?
AtramentaceousDave 9 months ago
@AtramentaceousDave it's the same as B-Major, it's a different naming tradition.
EmperadorKhan 9 months ago
@EmperadorKhan so how does that work and does it have a speial name?
AtramentaceousDave 8 months ago
@AtramentaceousDave
It is the German naming (some call it Northern European), it's basically the same as the English one, save for the fact the H is B and B is Bb.

God it's hard to sing along to you. Do you sing along yourself as you learn? If you don't, you should, it'll make the timing better.
