This seems like it might be a little bland, the korean food im used to eating is like POW powerful spices and flavors. Do you find the soup bland at all?
Aeri made this too! she says that you guys hare ideas about your recipes all the time. good job you two! keep supporting each other always! you both will be famous cooks in no time Haha AJA AJA!
My sister mad this when she came from AT, Gerogia and it was good. I love the chewyness from the ricecakes. She also said that there is lots of Koreans where she lived! Thanks!
Hi! Can the rice cakes be used as a substitute for the flour flakes in kimchi solgi (i think i spelled it wrong; it's the kimchi soup with flour flakes)? Thanks!
Could you please post a recipe for Siruduk (the one layered with crushed red beans and steamed sweet rice)? I used to work for a Korean boss, and she brought them to work one day. I fell in love with that dessert! Ever since then, I keep dreaming about it. I looked around at a Korean Market near my house but no luck... Please!
hi maangchi!!:) i'm wondering, can i use that kind of dduk for my ddukboki? my favorite korean grocery keeps on running out of the long cylindrical dduk and i'm craving for some dduk boki! :) thaanks so much :)
Your videos are amazing. My mom makes food just like you but I want to surprise my parents one day after work by cooking a delicious korean meal for them..all by myself!
You cook exactly like my grandmother. I miss my grandmother's cooking :*(. She makes everything from scrap... from spicy gochu jang (pepper paste) to smelly daen jang (soy bean paste). And ohh man her Kimchi is to die for!! Her skills come from over 50 years experience.
Maangchi i love your videos keep making them more frequently!!!
My question isn't really about this recipe but it's something silly I'm curious about. I love spicy food but some korean dishes are really really hot (heaps of hot pepper)! Are korean children fed the same dishes as adults? Or are milder dishes made for kids? Is it similar to how my parents were with coffee, I was allowed to taste but wasn't allowed to have my own cup until I was almost a teenager.
I am not Maangchi but, as far as I remember I have always eaten Korean food. I think it is like introducing any other food to kids. Let them try whatever they want when they are ready? And I think that some foods probably aren't appreciated until they get older anyways, there are things I eat now that I didn't like when I was younger.
To answer your question: yes. When I was younger, my mother always prepared two different versions of anything that was too spicy. That way my father and older brother and sisters were able to appreciate the more traditional recipe whereas I never saw the appeal in spicy food. My philosophy is that the act of eating is supposed to be an enjoyable experience, so why subject yourself to the pain and suffering associated with spicy food? Anyhow that was a good question =)
i just ate some of this today. I never tried fish sauce so thanks for the idea! do you ever cheat and use chicken broth? i read that off another korean cooking website.
I made my eggs this morning using your technique. Awesome! Just like a super thin pancake, with very little oil if you wipe it up with a napkin. I flashed cooked the otherside, so that the outside was fully cooked but the middle was nice and gooey. Then I put a slice of bacon in the egg wrap. Woo hoo.
I'm surprised how thin and clean your egg garnish is. Mine gets too thick all the time, so that it's difficult to slice. I will follow your instruction next time, maybe this weekend? ;)
Crumbling Nori in a plastic bag is a new technique for me. I haven't tried a fish sauce in any Korean cooking, but I will try that 3-crab fish sauce. I'm so hungry now.
awesome video. really kept me entertained.. normally i get kinda boted after the first few minutes or so.. but this one was just to entertaining to turn away from haha.
I am so hungry...love you...I wish to learn to cook korean food very well like you!! We dont have good supplies in NFLD...but I was ably to buy kimchi! When I move to BC, with more asian things I will make your recipes!! We seriously have limited supply here in NL!! Your adorable and wish I could meet you for help in cooking one day..although I can cook, better to learn from a pro ;) I want to make my potential asian husband happy one day!!
you are great! i really enjoy watching your videos. the first recipe of yours that i tried was the hot crispy sticky wings, and you won me over since then :)
You should be a fan of your own food! It looks so delicious and you are always so bomb with your presentation! I like your makeup and outfit, purple is my favorite color. :) I'm Thai and I use Three Crabs too, it's an excellent brand. Thanks again Maangchi! Happy New Year!
I don't know what looks sweeter: you or your deeok-guk. I'll make it for my Hanguk chingu-deul at Seollal; I can't wait to hear all the compliments - of course if I manage to recreate your magic. Sae hae bok manhi padeuseyo, Maangchi Jjang!
My family goes to my mom's friend's house and we eat this every new year, except we have kim strips instead of crushed, and we have the googi on the side incase we dont want some. For some reason i dont like it that much, lol. I like the spicy ddok though, its like in a red paste thing.
Dear Maangchi. I enjoy your cooking show all the time, however, I have a question..
As you already know, Koreans don't use fish sauce for rice cake soup..(when we do, we make broth from the dried anchovis) The original, and traditional broth for rice cake soup is beef broth. (or anchovis one since it's cheaper) I wonder you just used thai fish sauce for easier cooking..
ditto the comment about your hairstyle. your video not only looks really tasty, but alsol stylish. and i love the music! it would be cool if you published a list of the music you use in your videos.
I really like watching your videos! I don´t know korean food - and I can´t get the ingredients here in Iceland for sure - but you´re so fun to watch. Really interesting food going on there :)
When I lived in Korea, my Korean boyfriend made me 떡국 and it tasted terrible! I've never tasted it since then. But your recipe looks gooooooood! Next time I'll make it for him. ^__^ I've never seen the three crabs fish sauce anywhere. In Korea, what's the best fish sauce to use?
I was wondering... is the rice cake frozen? I saw some in my local asian market but they were dried....
