Stopped in at Wellington while flying from back to Christchurch - gets VERY bumpy around the Sinclair Head with a NW wind in a Piper Tomahawk - definitely tests you landing one of them on 34 when the wind is 310 @ 25 kts gusting 40 :)
spikie 4... The UA 747 was on the ground for 80 mins, no one got off and I witnessed the takeoff, there was no stripping out weight, it was airborne at about the 4500 ft mark and sailed off in to the sun. There was actually an Air NZ 747-200 that visited Welly before the UA to validate Wgtn as a alternate ahead of the 747-400, and a Qantas 747-200 did a low pass over the runway en-route to ChCh in 1972, so a total of three 747 visits to Welly above SP size.
hahahaha, thank you for that, we were lead to believe, that the UA pilots were on a bonus system during and after the gulf war to save aviation fuel, hence lesscarried fuel, less weight.... amazing being in the airline industry all these years how exchanging information amongst the airlines was mostly gossip ..... its called competition ... cheers
@spikie4 The first 747 to land there though was a QANTAS 747SP in 1981. Then in 1991 a United Airlines 747 was diverted from Auckland to Christchurch only to find that Christchurch was fogged in, therefore making an emergency landing in Wellington. Sources: Wellington airport Wikipedia
LOL, flue in to Wellington many time as an airline rep for many years, but remember an old UA 747- 100 from LAX in the 90's was diverted from Auckland, to Christchurch, lacking fuel it managed to made it to wellington -not designed for 7247 as too short, managed to land (how???? I don't know), but the aircraft was stranded, so they had to completely strip the plane down, seats and all to get it out ...... don't know how dangerous it was but they got it off the ground..... ummm
I so know what this is like, I flew into Brisbane and I swear I didn't even know that the plane had touched the ground it was so smooth, and When I flew from Auckland to Wellington I felt like the plane was going to land on it's wing it was real rough and then I think we did a 2 metre drop straight down when we did land land the tray table dropped open that was rough as hell that the pilot apologized for the rough landing. But travelling to Wellington by Air totally sucks I'd rather drive now.
Until an earthquake around 1460 it used to be the sea floor and the hills beside it Mirimar Island (now peninsula).
The very first attempted landing of an RAF bomber had to be aborted because it broke its undercarriage on touching down and had to abort and fly back to Ohakea with fuel streaming out the back: /watch?v=R3iMw7Q7H68
A sign of things to come.
They call it the aircraft carrier - short with water at both ends! Apparently it's common for the windsocks at each end to point at each other.
Welcome to Wellington Folks, out your left window you'll see the runway above those rocks and out the left you can see Petone lights between the waves....
Yet there have been no crashes there. I've heard that pilots enjoying landing at Wellington Airport so much they do it 2 or 3 times everytime they fly in. lol
...and those are just the usual landings. I've been on a couple where I thought it was all over. Then there was one at Palmerston North - bounced around the sky all the way down. I was at the front right, looking out the window and hanging onto the seat arms. About thirty feet from the ground I found myself looking directly down the runway, because we'd spun around 90 degrees.
This is the reason why tourists love Wellington: surviving the landing makes the city that much better. I say chuck in an engine failure here and there to really boost Wellington's international rankings!
@feeditbeans Old school NZ planes? I went to Tonga and hopped on a plane to on of the other islands. I swear it was the exact same plane from the end scene of Casablanca!

.....and there has never been ONE incident.......and it is also why we produce great pilots. You can always do the White Knuckle Death Grip on the chair if you think it helps ! ......but it doesnt......and getting a Super Cub in there is SUCH fun....hahahaha
this happend on Monday(22/03/10), lucky i was in JETSTAR as it was a bigger plane. i was in AirNZ coming from Auckland before and it was the best bumpy ride every!
Ive experienced the worst landing ever in wellington yesterday, the couple in front of me were holding hands and crying...Fuck this I said, this was my last trip to wellies on the plane. I rather spend 3 hours drivin the car and 3 hours on the ferry from Picton then fly to wellington again.
I flew into Wellington about 12 times. AND NOT ONCE DID I HAVE A LANDING WITHOUT WATCHING MY WHOLE LIFE FLASH BY EYES. WITHOUT MY HEART STOPPING UNTIL I GET TO BAG RECLAIM. WITHOUT MY FINGERS CRUSHING THE ARMRESTS. WITHOUT PROMISING GOD I'LL BE GOOD FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE AND DONATE ALL MY MONEY AND ASSETS TO CHARITY.
WHO THE FUCK DECIDED TO BUILD AN AIRPORT STRATHMORE!!
OMG YOU POOR THING! I flown in countless times and fortunately i only experienced a very rough landing in a boeing twice...i was in tears cos i too thought my number was up
I live in Wellington - the worst one I was on was after we had landed, they had to get the firetruck out to shelter the passengers to allow us to get off the plane - a small ATR 72. Hostess said that flying can continue until about 90 knots, but have to stop at 70 because people get blown over when around the planes.
Love it - especially if you hit a really hard bump and the oxygen masks drop down - really scares the people who have never landed before.
I had this when I took off from Wellington early this year. It was like being on a rollercoaster dipping and hitting pockets of wind. I felt safe, but I still gripped the handrests like crazy. People were mostly quietly sighing such phrases as "ohhh.." "shiit" "jeeesus..." whenever we hit a bump...I'm going again next January so I am praying for a still day!! It wasn't pleasant.
1080 new zealandFACT: One of 1080s breakdown products is highly toxic fluorocitrate. ref. S. Weaver. 1080 remains stable in distilled water and breaks down extremely slowly in low temperatures, ie. Yep that looks about right! Landing at Wellington Airport is terrifying! The plane is always blowing about like that! You're pretty safe though because most of the pilots landing there have done it a million times, they are so used to it they always land expertly.

Hey this is normal flying into Wellington. Used to do it every week for years. They reckon if you can land and take off from this airport you can do it anywhere, as the cross winds and wind sheer test the best of pilots!
No it is no like the Bermuda Triangle. Wellington in called the Windy City here. So if there is really bad winds it rocks the planes as they land, and to ask your question on a bad day yes it was that bad.
Flew into Wellington a couple of years ago after a trip to Australia, got to the terminal, and thought "What a dump! I must be home." (They were doing rennovations at the time)
Any pilot that can land the plane in such a condition (crosswind / windsheer) is bloody great pilot. Landing in a calm, smooth condition is strawl in the park. Good on them, all of them
OMFG - I have an extreme fear of flying and after watching this, I can honestly say I'm NEVER flying into Wellington Airport! I've got butterflies just watching this ...
well this is just normal and you wont feel it in the cabin, frankly speaking i am afraid of the windy wellington while landing there specially you are at the control and crosswinds hitting at 40knts. but again its normal for kiwi pilots who handle crosswinds better than others.
Air NZ does have 747s, but they only land in Auckland. Eg. LAX to AKL or HKG to AKL or Singapore to AKL. Wellington airport has too small of a runway for 747s.
If you land to late, hit the gas and try again. Is it windy like that a lot? Or is it just the proximity to water you don't like? Look at Logan Intl airport in Boston, Massachusetts. surrounded by water but has 10,000ft strips.
that crazy wind!!!

OMFG - I have an extreme fear of flying and after watching this, I can honestly say I'm NEVER flying into Wellington Airport! I've got butterflies just watching this ...

well this is just normal and you wont feel it in the cabin, frankly speaking i am afraid of the windy wellington while landing there specially you are at the control and crosswinds hitting at 40knts. but again its normal for kiwi pilots who handle crosswinds better than others.
zulquarnainanwar 3 years ago
yup they don't "touch down" in wellington, they "slam it!" into the tarmac lol
Great fun to be on board and a real eye opener...especially when you look out your side window and see the runway coming at you sideways! :)

woo hoo haha! ah yes, best landings are here. Ive been on a plane that had to try 3 times before it could land safely at Wgtn!

hahaha!nice i wonder if this airport can handle the A380!LOL!nice nice!
ahhkainis 3 years ago
No we cannot handle an A380 nor 747s either. The runway is too short.
skibumwa2001 3 years ago
oh!then why does air new zealand has an fleet of boeing 747?
ahhkainis 3 years ago
Air NZ does have 747s, but they only land in Auckland. Eg. LAX to AKL or HKG to AKL or Singapore to AKL. Wellington airport has too small of a runway for 747s.
skibumwa2001 3 years ago
and Christchurch you egg :P

If you land too early - you're in the water. If you land too late, well, - you're in the water. I hate landing here! haha
domfromnz 3 years ago
If you land to late, hit the gas and try again. Is it windy like that a lot? Or is it just the proximity to water you don't like? Look at Logan Intl airport in Boston, Massachusetts. surrounded by water but has 10,000ft strips.
