  • that crazy wind!!!

  • Stopped in at Wellington while flying from back to Christchurch - gets VERY bumpy around the Sinclair Head with a NW wind in a Piper Tomahawk - definitely tests you landing one of them on 34 when the wind is 310 @ 25 kts gusting 40 :)

  • Honestly, Wellington Airport must be considered as a very dangerous airport in some cases for many reasons...

  • spikie 4... The UA 747 was on the ground for 80 mins, no one got off and I witnessed the takeoff, there was no stripping out weight, it was airborne at about the 4500 ft mark and sailed off in to the sun. There was actually an Air NZ 747-200 that visited Welly before the UA to validate Wgtn as a alternate ahead of the 747-400, and a Qantas 747-200 did a low pass over the runway en-route to ChCh in 1972, so a total of three 747 visits to Welly above SP size.

  • Love the old Ansett BAE 146 (1 plane - has 4 engines - needs 6.)

  • we landed with one engine and the airport was closed deu to wind but it was an emergince

  • What the fucks with that shitty music ruins the video ....

  • @p2pat turn comp off birdbrain

  • @midgeurefan fuck you

  • did they check the last plane for structural damage? lol

  • hahahaha, thank you for that, we were lead to believe, that the UA pilots were on a bonus system during and after the gulf war to save aviation fuel, hence lesscarried fuel, less weight.... amazing being in the airline industry all these years how exchanging information amongst the airlines was mostly gossip ..... its called competition ... cheers

  • Oh I am not a pilot and not sure of the ability/possiblilty of a 747 landing at WLG airport.... but it was a great talking point at the time .....

  • @spikie4 The first 747 to land there though was a QANTAS 747SP in 1981. Then in 1991 a United Airlines 747 was diverted from Auckland to Christchurch only to find that Christchurch was fogged in, therefore making an emergency landing in Wellington. Sources: Wellington airport Wikipedia

  • LOL, flue in to Wellington many time as an airline rep for many years, but remember an old UA 747- 100 from LAX in the 90's was diverted from Auckland, to Christchurch, lacking fuel it managed to made it to wellington -not designed for 7247 as too short, managed to land (how???? I don't know), but the aircraft was stranded, so they had to completely strip the plane down, seats and all to get it out ...... don't know how dangerous it was but they got it off the ground..... ummm

  • I so know what this is like, I flew into Brisbane and I swear I didn't even know that the plane had touched the ground it was so smooth, and When I flew from Auckland to Wellington I felt like the plane was going to land on it's wing it was real rough and then I think we did a 2 metre drop straight down when we did land land the tray table dropped open that was rough as hell that the pilot apologized for the rough landing. But travelling to Wellington by Air totally sucks I'd rather drive now.

  • Haha. I've only experienced perfect landings at Wellington. Nice and smooth. I actually want a scary one one day. :P

  • Whats this music? i like this!!! thanks.

  • There are lots of crosswind landing. whoa! what a really windy city to

  • Until an earthquake around 1460 it used to be the sea floor and the hills beside it Mirimar Island (now peninsula).

The very first attempted landing of an RAF bomber had to be aborted because it broke its undercarriage on touching down and had to abort and fly back to Ohakea with fuel streaming out the back: /watch?v=R3iMw7Q7H68

A sign of things to come.

They call it the aircraft carrier - short with water at both ends! Apparently it's common for the windsocks at each end to point at each other.

  • What makes landing at Wellington unpleasant is not the wind. It's the customs officials and police. NZ is a nice place but it's like a police state.

  • @DAHKSYDE Spot on.

  • sweet

  • I've flew into wellington about 4 times, was fine, apart from 1 time.

  • if you can land at wellington airport, you can land anywhere.

  • I went to wellington last year, the landing was LEGENDARY!

  • Welcome to Wellington Folks, out your left window you'll see the runway above those rocks and out the left you can see Petone lights between the waves....

    no wait, swap them round..

  • Yet there have been no crashes there. I've heard that pilots enjoying landing at Wellington Airport so much they do it 2 or 3 times everytime they fly in. lol

  • ...and those are just the usual landings. I've been on a couple where I thought it was all over. Then there was one at Palmerston North - bounced around the sky all the way down. I was at the front right, looking out the window and hanging onto the seat arms. About thirty feet from the ground I found myself looking directly down the runway, because we'd spun around 90 degrees.

  • what TERD puts a runway THERE?!?!?!?!!

  • @thebobertone The reason it's there is that it's about the only flat piece of land in the city

  • Hey, Wassup, Chrisopher. K.....mm... You may not get in here..? or 've been??

  • QANTAS AT 0:36 ! THE WORLDS BEST AIRLINE!

  • @kawasaki2948 agreed

  • climate's windy

  • This is the reason why tourists love Wellington: surviving the landing makes the city that much better. I say chuck in an engine failure here and there to really boost Wellington's international rankings!

  • Love the old school NZ planes. I've been in a few landing that felt like that on the inside.

  • @feeditbeans Old school NZ planes? I went to Tonga and hopped on a plane to on of the other islands. I swear it was the exact same plane from the end scene of Casablanca!

  • this isnt that bad pilots are trained to handle it

  • wellington, the best city in new zealand :)

    Yeah.

  • @ambbb1973 then why is it so hard to land? the water and a mountain?

  • is it just eiindy ther or something? sorry idk about this airport

  • @chris5812341234 just a little mate

  • @chris5812341234

    just a little

  • whats the music called?

  • I miss it so much, I used to drive under the tunnel past Lyall Bay to get to work.

  • what the heck is that plane at 1:08 ?

  • @edm618 BAe146

  • @edm618 I think its a BAE-146

  • @FlightX101 - Yep and they used to get blown around something cronic

  • Lol im moving to lower hutt, new zealand soon and i wanted to know if it has alot of crime like gang fights and stuff but i dont think its as bad as were i come from. I come from glasgow, scotland murder capital of europe can someone help me on this one?

    Thanks

  • @MrPkownz Kia ora from an Edinburgher that moved here several years ago.

The same social issues occur here, like anywhere else.

It is,however definitely safer than Scotland to walk about at night and all the gang stuff usually remains between the Mob and black power.

It isn't a Utopia, but i really love living here,my only regret is that Scotland is SO far away.Good luck with your move!Oh,and by the way,you can get Irn-Bru here!

  • .....and there has never been ONE incident.......and it is also why we produce great pilots. You can always do the White Knuckle Death Grip on the chair if you think it helps ! ......but it doesnt......and getting a Super Cub in there is SUCH fun....hahahaha

  • The winds and cross winds must be high there, right? from New York

  • what a mess airport, why would they still want to build an airport there??

  • @TheFSXpilot1996 It's the only flat land that was available within 80km of the city.

  • Lol at Ansett Australia at 0:55

  • this happend on Monday(22/03/10), lucky i was in JETSTAR as it was a bigger plane. i was in AirNZ coming from Auckland before and it was the best bumpy ride every!

  • HA ha .... I may be flying to Wellington soon .... Landing at Auckland and traveling for a day is looking like a better option ..... CRAP!

  • Respect to our pilots a. Class! Ive been in so many times it doesnt bother anymore. Dem pilots got mad skills. peace

  • I live in Wellington, as well, and I know, that this Airport can be one of the worst Airports to land in when the weather really kicks in!

  • @florianderl did yhu died :O

  • Take a good guess ;P

  • i flew into Wellington over the water when it was like that and it was my first ever plane ride scary stuff

  • Ive experienced the worst landing ever in wellington yesterday, the couple in front of me were holding hands and crying...Fuck this I said, this was my last trip to wellies on the plane. I rather spend 3 hours drivin the car and 3 hours on the ferry from Picton then fly to wellington again.

  • Isn't it one of the worst airport runways in the world, been so short ?.

Get a good wind going, and as the video shows some of those planes are landing sideways.

Mmmmm I don't fly that much, especially on those small 'pencil' planes. :-P

  • I flew into Wellington about 12 times. AND NOT ONCE DID I HAVE A LANDING WITHOUT WATCHING MY WHOLE LIFE FLASH BY EYES. WITHOUT MY HEART STOPPING UNTIL I GET TO BAG RECLAIM. WITHOUT MY FINGERS CRUSHING THE ARMRESTS. WITHOUT PROMISING GOD I'LL BE GOOD FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE AND DONATE ALL MY MONEY AND ASSETS TO CHARITY.

WHO THE FUCK DECIDED TO BUILD AN AIRPORT STRATHMORE!!

  • OMG YOU POOR THING! I flown in countless times and fortunately i only experienced a very rough landing in a boeing twice...i was in tears cos i too thought my number was up

  • @filiandsela

Hahahaha, do you realise that exactly the same process occurs where we pilts sit?

  • Adrenaline junkies. :-)

  • @filiandsela ..... Love your comment. It made me laugh. I think God has heard your prayer coz you are still with us ha ha ha ha.

  • @ThomasAUSTRALIA1 He's obviously warning me to stay out of Wellington. LOL

  • @filiandsela you're just a pussy when it comes to flying

  • @gypsykingg I'm GI Joe when it comes to flying. But I'm Jar Jar Binks when landing in Wellington.

  • @filiandsela LOL

  • @filiandsela I think it was because it was the opnly flat land around they could find :P

  • @filiandsela

I grew up in Wellington and it was the first airport I ever flew out of. Perhaps this is why i never find flying stresssful lol.

  • @Lewis1711

I bet you fall asleep on rollercoasters lol.

  • @filiandsela lol harden up!! I've lived in welly all my life.. the wind is not as bad as people make it out to be! hahah

    bumpy landings are the best!

  • what's the music?

and awesome video, had a few scary landings at the airport myself :)

  • I live in Wellington - the worst one I was on was after we had landed, they had to get the firetruck out to shelter the passengers to allow us to get off the plane - a small ATR 72. Hostess said that flying can continue until about 90 knots, but have to stop at 70 because people get blown over when around the planes.

Love it - especially if you hit a really hard bump and the oxygen masks drop down - really scares the people who have never landed before.

  • the only time kiwi's shit their pants is? THE RUGBY WORLD CUP.

  • quite average

  • its windy but im used 2 it

  • It's only fitting that an airport known for adrenaline-packed landings can be found in a country known for adrenaline rushes. ;)

  • 0:48, almost a prop strike

  • Good old Wendy Willington!

  • Fresh undies with your green lollys?

  • I'd love to go to WLG one day.

  • What great airport xD

  • I had this when I took off from Wellington early this year. It was like being on a rollercoaster dipping and hitting pockets of wind. I felt safe, but I still gripped the handrests like crazy. People were mostly quietly sighing such phrases as "ohhh.." "shiit" "jeeesus..." whenever we hit a bump...I'm going again next January so I am praying for a still day!! It wasn't pleasant.

  • Comment removed

  • What's the music?

  • amazing 767 shaking like paper in the wind

  • lol some great pilots

  • whats the wellington postcode?

  • NZWN

  • 6003 i think mine used to be and i lived in the city.

  • @DarkExtraction

The post codes have changed. The code for the city is 6011

  • 1080 new zealandFACT: One of 1080s breakdown products is highly toxic fluorocitrate. ref. S. Weaver. 1080 remains stable in distilled water and breaks down extremely slowly in low temperatures, ie. In NZ streams in winter, therefore undegraded 1080 can be washed downwards into ground water and water supplies putting humans at risk. 1080

  • I saw Mock the week, a BBC comedy show which makes me say this: move the roadway and then no cross winds but head or tail winds :) lol

  • lol at 0:55, let's use the front landing gear to land it might be stronger HAAHA

  • HHHHMMMMM, maybe wind to high?

    GEEE IDUNU

  • man these are real old school planes :D

  • That last one looked like the landing gear needed replacement.

  • Love it! But I love rollercoasters too ;)

  • Yep that looks about right! Landing at Wellington Airport is terrifying! The plane is always blowing about like that! You're pretty safe though because most of the pilots landing there have done it a million times, they are so used to it they always land expertly.

  • For those travelling to wellington via plane make sure you have life insurance

  • Those Clips R pretty Old And it is true That there has been 0 crashes in wellngton airport

  • surprisingly enough there has never been a crash there before...

  • Oh crap, is the weather at Wellington really that extreme?XD

  • mmhmm welcome to wellington

  • Some of those clips are pretty darn old now. I must admit to my most terrifying landing being there. I avoid Wellington like the plague now. A Short runway with step drops at both ends. The end you are most likely to drop off has a high pressure gas line and trolley bus wiring to ignite it & your jets fuel. Nice... Not! Great for the capital of this lil country.

  • GO WELLINGTON!!!!

  • Recently moved to Wellington and can safely say that my last 6 landings have scored 8 or more on the "Arse Nipper Index"

  • Regular flyers into Wellington resemble WW1 Fighter pilots after awhile. Too much strong drink and too many close brushes with death.

  • I love this video so much. I send it to all my friends and family back in the States. Gee, I wonder why they don't come visit me. :)

I always feel cheated flying into Wellington if it's not terrifying!

  • Ah the good old days of godzone, hoping to go back soon,by the way wellington is worth any bad landing!!!

  • im just throwing this out there on a whim and a prayer but does anyone in wellington know a guy named 'Phil' or 'Phillip' who really likes to upload youtube video's?

i believe he's a former military man and he's into new age weaponry. sadly his mom has also passed away

get back to me if you know him, joe

  • Nice video. You can always tell an out-of-towner on a flight into Wellington -- the ones gripping their armrests with frozen expressions of pure terror mwaahaha

  • No.. That would be the pilots!

  • I swear I saw a sheep!

  • I had a landking like these ito welly a few days ago in a Q300... left me shaking in my boots 120km southerly wind gusts

  • Hey this is normal flying into Wellington. Used to do it every week for years. They reckon if you can land and take off from this airport you can do it anywhere, as the cross winds and wind sheer test the best of pilots!

  • OMG !!!

Can you imagine passengers inside these planes with these landings ?!!

  • Yes...

I've been in two landings like this O_o

    Wellington FTW!

  • Man some of those videos were old, i saw Anzett planes

  • What is the music featured in this video? I like it.

  • Wait, I don't get it... Why are all the planes shaking as they land? it is like the bermuda triangle?

  • No it is no like the Bermuda Triangle. Wellington in called the Windy City here. So if there is really bad winds it rocks the planes as they land, and to ask your question on a bad day yes it was that bad.

  • Flew into Wellington a couple of years ago after a trip to Australia, got to the terminal, and thought "What a dump! I must be home." (They were doing rennovations at the time)

  • Any pilot that can land the plane in such a condition (crosswind / windsheer) is bloody great pilot. Landing in a calm, smooth condition is strawl in the park. Good on them, all of them

  • i love coming into wellington if ive been away! and also enjoy watching planes land on windy days. gives me a real kick :D

  • i meant to say sick

  • I hate landing at Wellington. I had to land in a big plane with turblance and well I got sicl

  • this is the hell, when i landing at welington in a big plane!!

    mfg

  • I'm guessing that someone became rather bored whilst waiting to board their flight lol

  • They don't call it windy Wellington for nothing!!! Been there, done that!!!

  • Great video !

  • sounds awesome!!! i love turbulence!!!!! but i never seem to get any of late:P

  • OMFG - I have an extreme fear of flying and after watching this, I can honestly say I'm NEVER flying into Wellington Airport! I've got butterflies just watching this ...

  • well this is just normal and you wont feel it in the cabin, frankly speaking i am afraid of the windy wellington while landing there specially you are at the control and crosswinds hitting at 40knts. but again its normal for kiwi pilots who handle crosswinds better than others.

  • yup they don't "touch down" in wellington, they "slam it!" into the tarmac lol

Great fun to be on board and a real eye opener...especially when you look out your side window and see the runway coming at you sideways! :)

  • Hahaha can't stand Wellington Airport. Aucklands much better

  • AK N CH-CH Airports are for pussies (SP?)

Give me a roughy into Wellington any time.

  • Looks like I'll be wearing my brown trousers when I land at Wellington Airport!

  • Haha my kind of psycho :)

  • My lord! That last plane looked like it was piloted by Capt. Kangaroo! What a bounce! :0

  • Landing in Wellington in an ATR-72 can be fun

  • woo hoo haha! ah yes, best landings are here. Ive been on a plane that had to try 3 times before it could land safely at Wgtn!

  • hahaha!nice i wonder if this airport can handle the A380!LOL!nice nice!

  • No we cannot handle an A380 nor 747s either. The runway is too short.

  • oh!then why does air new zealand has an fleet of boeing 747?

  • Air NZ does have 747s, but they only land in Auckland. Eg. LAX to AKL or HKG to AKL or Singapore to AKL. Wellington airport has too small of a runway for 747s.

  • and Christchurch you egg :P

  • i thought it is one of your major airports?

  • Auckland and Christchurch are our major airports

  • thats one thing i miss about working for air nz - the wlg landings...awesome.

  • i work at this airport and these pilots go threw this flying weekly haha it's cool to watch ;)

  • ouch! poor dash 8 at the end. Ive experienced a horrible landing at this airport first hand. Not a nice experience at all!!!!

  • the worst ones were by Qantas and Ansett Australia.

Aussies just cant fly good and blame it on the wind

  • Haha, the super 14 rugby team in wellington is called the hurricanes!

  • Is wellington known for their windy conditions?

  • yep! it's nicknamed windy wellington!

  • nice video

  • If you land too early - you're in the water. If you land too late, well, - you're in the water. I hate landing here! haha

  • If you land to late, hit the gas and try again. Is it windy like that a lot? Or is it just the proximity to water you don't like? Look at Logan Intl airport in Boston, Massachusetts. surrounded by water but has 10,000ft strips.

  • Awesome, i like plane

  • the last landin must hurt

  • not really, but it is a big clunk!

  • 194000 views. Impressive! Landing at wgtn is like a roller coaster ride. Amazing!

  • hahahaha nice vid

  • LOL when you often fly in and out of Wellington, you'll get used to that.

  • I've been in one of those landings. Vomited everywhere.

  • Everyone we know says landing in Wellington is horrific! Ill find out soon enough...

  • Yeah wellington Airport is pretty nasty, talk of it being blacklisted.

  • I will be in wellington in two days.just what I need to see

  • LOL
