lol If a house is making enough energy to supply itself and still make more power the power company will actually pay you money at the end of the month
"Why do you need to sell your extra power? you are already profiting the amount of your monthly bill."
Uh, first because there is satisfaction in having the govt owe YOU money for a change, and second, it's like bitpackrat said, solar power does carry some replacement costs to it.

You think thats fast, you should see how quick solar will empty your wallet!!! only $30,000 per installaion and it needs to be replaced in 20 years! wow! only $1,500 per year for a solution that wont even decrease your grid consumption by half!! screw investing that money in the stock market or sending your kids to college. noones invented the nighttime solar power array. im sure this sucker is waiting for it to come around.
its not 30,000. its about 15,000.00 if you know where to shop, and you dont have to replace them in 20 years.. you just need to take care of them... can always make a call to state farm too :-)
Even if this were true (which it is not) $30,000 equates to $125 per month...which is an average electricity bill in TODAY'S DOLLARS AND ELECTRICITY RATES. Therefore, even without ANY inflation, the system pays for itself...what else can you say that about?

That is illegal to do for most electric companies. The metering equipment belongs to the electric company. When you have this setup it creates backfeed and endangers the lives of people working on the power. I don't know your situation, but as an employee of an electric company, I'm hoping that people ask there electric provider before they attempt anything. I know that we do not allow this type of setup.
It requires a permit and a breaker box to prevent back feed. I'd be more concerned about the guy with a generator who hard wires it into a circuit without a breaker box. In that case workers could be hurt.
Which is my point exactly. I commented only on the fact that not all utilities allow this setup. I work for an investor-owned utility and we do not allow net metering at this time. As long as people understand the process and can get the permits then I could care less. I just didn't want someone to invest in a system and find out that their electric provider doesn't allow the setup. That's all.
in utah the law is called net metering. the city has to buy power you don't use for the cost of the cheapest power produced excluding free renewable sources so it's perfectly legal.
first of all its not dangerous because as per UL 1741 solar inverters can not be connected to the grid unless the inverters disconnect from the grid with 16 milliseconds of a grid outage.
The major down side to selling the power back to electric company is when you purchase their power, you pay retail + tax. When you sell it back to them they buy it at cost and no tax. This way they still make money off of you, but they are a business and are here to make money, not give things away. Oh well, we can dream, right?
There will always be buildings and businesses that will use more power than they generate. They usually have solar to decrease how much they use from the Electric company. Also, the electric company will still produce power durring the night, so I would not worry about it. As a side note, you still have people with wind generators going 24/7.
Why do you need to sell your extra power? you are already profiting the amount of your monthly bill. And as for night power solar systems have a battery bank for reserve electrical capacity. Thus you have power when there is no sun, and it charges back up when there is sun.
Find out how your meter can do the same thing with NO UPFRONT HARDWARE INVESTMENT! Do a search on you tube under "net metering" and watch the miniature solar home display to learn more.
just had a 1.5 KW solar grid connected, here it only costs 1,500 , with a 6,200 government rebate

Not true, I know some people who have solar power, who are also on the power grid. The Electric company sends THEM a check for GENERATING grid power
