back then the presenters seemed not to have been told to back away from the winners.. they stand right there through their speech it is done better today
I noticed Susan Hayward is in this. I just bought some of her movies off of lovingtheclassics. If you are interested google it (lovingtheclassics) and you will find her actual movies and more.
love hayward. taylor doesn't belong here. russell was fabulous and leslie caron so sadly overlooked. it comes down to those three, hayward, caron and russell. i think russell by a nose.
JamesCagney, Susan Hayward, Kim Novak, Irene Dunne, John Wayne, David Niven, Ingrid Bergman, Real Movie Stars! The magic they exhibited does not exist in today's Hollywood.
Kim Novak looking sleek and beautiful was my idea of what a movie star would look like. Miss Hayward rightfully won the Oscar and was given a thunderous ovation and what wasn't shown was a curtain call ...brought back on stage for a continued ovation.
@TheSuppActress Susan Hayward never delivered a bad performance. Her scripts were not always the best but she always managed to rise above the material she was delt. I believe she should not only have won for I Want to Live but also should have been presented an honorary award for the pictures for which she was nominated, especially the great oversight of I'll Cry Tomorrow.

I also would agree that the last appearance of Miss Hayward would be great to see. I recall the cameras pulled back to a very long shot but Susan was great anyway.
I also wish someone would put the curtain call Susan got after she won Her Oscar, I believe the only time in Oscar history a winner was recalled to the stage.
Does anyone have the film of Susan Hayward's last Oscar awards appearance, I think as a presenter, near the end of her life when she was already so ill? I would love to see that again.
i think that was from 1974 oscar presentation when she (susan hayward) and charlton heston presents best actress to glenda jackson (which absent to collect her prize, i must assume). i haven't seen that film but i had read it somewhere in the net.
Thank you! ---at least that gives me some idea where to look. Hayward was dying, but had made a great effort to be there, many people putting her together. Afterwards she had a seizure in the car en route home from Oscars: 'Well, I won't try THAT again!'

Both movies "I Want to Live" and "Separate Tables" were wonderful.

Was that Kim Novak who presented the award to Susan? The film was a little blurry, but it looked like her.

Susan Hayward was the best. No one like her. Wish I could have heard her speech from the 1959 Oscars.

Thank you for the clip. Susan Hayward was the greatest and she had deserved that Oscar 4 times previously.

No, she deserved this Oscar, and only this Oscar.

What do you think about David Niven's win? He's the shortest lead actor winner.

Miss Hayward was given the only curtain call I can ever recall a Winner. Well Earned. RIP Great Lady

The 1958 Best Actor Oscar should have gone to Sidney Poitier or Tony Curtis, both in "The Defiant Ones".
