@Shloopp There is a character development in sitcoms. its funny because its such a Sheldonian recitation. Its funny because people who are inclined to find it funny, laugh. I am also, a) a former Physics guy who finds it very funny, and b) English, not American. Your opinion on its humour content is not only incorrect to myself and millions of fans all over the world, but the judging panels of numerous awards bodies.
The drake equation is pseudo-science... not testable, makes no predictions... based on what Drake THOUGHT were reasonable factors to account for the existence of ET life.
@wownov83 Uhh, it *is* testable in principle (maybe not currently in practice), and it *does* make predictions ("with these values we should expect roughly *this* many civilisations”).
@wownov83 Its only pseudo science if you assume the terms in the equation cannot even in principle be predicted or improved upon with work and research. This has proved to be very doable and the predictions the drake equation make are improved every year. Obviously things like "what percentage of planets develop radio capable civilisations" can only be guesswork, until we've found a large number of exo biospheres (only a matter of time) and found what percentage of those are sending signals.
@Drenizer Well yes, I have a solid understanding of the drake equation, but given that Jim, (the actor) is NOT Sheldon, the genius physicist, it is exceptionally well delivered
@Ghengiseanie I always wondered if the actors in this show always know what they're talking about, they surely look like it, but its acting so you can never tell.
@Shivierie It does make me wonder if he knows what he's saying, or if he's memorized and practiced it so many times that he can say it in less than 30 seconds.
The one that estimates the odds of making contact with extraterrestrials by calculating the product of an increasingly restrictive series of fractional values such as those stars with planets, and those planets likely to develop life? N equals R times FP times NE times FL times FI times FC times L?
I knew about the Drake Equation before this episode, and I found it quite humorous how he can say it so quickly unlike I. I have to take some time to say it, since it's very alliterate.
@SnivelyTheGlamful I also knew about the Drake equation..and after watching this video I attempted to say it that quickly...and failed. many times. MANY.
@Johnnygiggles To update/add to this comment. Jim Parsons (Sheldon) has actually won 5 awards so far in the comedy category. I'm sure he has many more to come.
@MrNannerman Everyday? Can you please explain why you'd work on the Drake Equation everyday? Its so simple, even if you worked at SETI or NASA you wouldn't go back and remember oh yeah that's one way of looking at the probability of finding life.

@miguelangelv7 I am very aware of what the Drake equation is. All he is doing is reciting it. There is no punchline.
