I have an '80 2-Seater GL sitting in the garage right now. I am the second owner and was given the original sticker when I bought the car. It was listed at $10,657. Those were the days.
Oh yeah, and that crappy plastic badge on the front... is only held on by two little plastic treads, it breaks off. Worse, rust bubles right around that front hood edge. All that luxury stuff doesn't work anymore, its just dead weight on the car, and I had to drill a new Woodrow key slot in the crankshaft and make a new Woodrow key because mine just sheered right off. Worst car I have ever owned, it forces you to be a full time mechanic. I spend more time working on mine than driving it.
Haha, the kids across the street are the same way about my identical colored 83 zxt. But the clear coat has hella dandruff everywhere, the injectors are clogged, my springs were shot out 10 years ago, and even though I've got it the best its ever run in the last 15 years plus 5 extra pounds of boost, it still has a hard time keeping up with todays traffic. I keep trying to tweak things hoping there's some power somewhere in there and thinking "Someday..."
While this commercial was aired, 280ZX was one of my dream car, I am car less and had to ride bus. When I had money to buy a new car, I bought a corolla instead, but I do experience my wife's 81 Datsun 200SX. Good gas millage.
haha, my neighbors boys are actually like that, they come up to my Z and want to sit in it. of course, my 30 year old Z looks like Christina hell car death warmed over with all the clear coat peeling off. i don't let them anywhere near it, they destroy cars, and for them, it will be 'never'. sigh. I'd rather have a Jaguar X13 or Jaguar XK drop top. the Z is like the pokey stationwagon of sports cars. its only redeeming quality is the junkyards are full of them so you can get parts cheap.
My parents used to have one back in the early 80s. I really liked that car. I always wanted one as I got older. But I settled for a 350z a couple of months ago. But the old 280zx is truly a classic. Too bad my parents traded the old 1979 280zx for a 1985 Dodge Aries. (they needed a third seat with seatbelts for me).
Aha reminds me of a friend of mine. His dad owned a 280ZX since my friend was little, and he always dreamed of owning a car like his dads. Last summer he fulfilled that dream when he bought his 86 300ZX. Very good commercial I wish we had more like this on TV.
Aww man, lol. It's a truly awesome car. I JUST crashed mine today, hit an oil slick getting on the freeway, hit the barriar at around 45mph. Front passenger side is cremed. Oh well, life sucks, buy a helmet. Now I guess I HAVE to buy that bodykit, lol

Unlike the children of today, maybe this lad grew up to drive a REAL car... one with a manual transmission.
Stratocaster05 1 year ago 8
@Stratocaster05 I agree. How come it's so difficult nowadays to find a manual transmission car?

@kenisimoo thats because they are not like most of today's Americans: too fat and lazy to drive a stick.

How much were they MSRP back in 1980 ? Thanks in advance. Also why was the automatic turbo faster than a 5 speed for the turbo zx ?
nxxi 1 year ago
@nxxi depends on how fast you shift the five speed

sweet ride but dont they rust fast not like a pacer though
Darklordkime 1 year ago
Depends on where you are and what part of the car. If you live in a wet area, rust was a problem, particularly in the exhaust system.
I live in the desert, and my 280ZX is completely rust free (and it rains hard during the monsoon season). Overall, they're not too bad.

This Generation for 280ZX Wasn't Bad for Rust!

Bloody American's.
It's a "two-eighty zed ex"... none of this "zee ex" bullshit.
Lovely cars though, nice to drive.

Saying zed at the end is like watching a ballet dancer go through a beautiful routine and then smash into a brick wall.

Yeah, lovely sounding word...Zed.
So catchy.
Well, I'm off to drive my 370 ZED.
