  • Thank you. My name is Colinda and I was named after this song. So nice to hear it. I had the 45 at one time but it has since been lost. Would love another copy of it. Thank you for this.

  • Rod recorded this song just before heading off to Marine Corps boot camp in Parris Island, SC in 1962 so it would be released while he was in training.

When I arrived at Camp Geiger, NC in May of 1962, Rod was in the barracks next to mine. I bought a guitar in the PX and we use to sit on the lawn during weekends off and play and sing.

  • @GLarryB I know that it was released prior to Feb of 62 because that was when I was born and my mother already had it. That is where she got my name. Thanks and love the story.

    Colinda

  • Use to listen to this song in french by Marie King

  • @Jacques4365 I've heard it on Youtube.

  • this is the 1st recording of cajun music that i 1st remember hearing. i think it was on the radio here briefly. [cape cod, ma. 1963] anyway i ended up buying the 45 a few weeks later at a record bargain sale.

  • @jonlarkster It's my first one too. New Orleans stuck pretty much to Rock 'n' Roll and R&B however, this one was a big hit and got lots of airplay. Who knew just miles away were small wattage am radio stations pumping this stuff out day and night.

  • Gee, being Canadian, you'd think I'd have known that??

    Thanks

  • @farion175 I think it's a very small area of Canada but is actually the roots of those who moved to the bayous down here. BTW, if I ever leave New Orleans, I think I would move to Vancouver. Just a wonderful, cool city with some of the nicest people I have ever met. Too bad they lost the "NBA "Grizzlies". Would have been another incentive for me but hell, I ain't goin' nowhere.

  • @farion175 Please help me if you can ... I'm a Canuckle head 3 generations removed . My favorite " Nanni" was a Montreal girl . My Grand mama .I known that they were of English deravation with a Surname of KEARNS ... the apple didn't fall too far from the tree, as I only have one trophy ( hockey ) and still have a thing for chocolate eclairs . I'm far from a Cajun but I do love history . I know of relatives by the name of Van Deist and O'Sullivan .

  • I remember this from the 60's sung by a woman - does anyone know who it might have been?

  • @farion175 Sorry, can't help you.

  • @farion175 Canada's Lucille Starr :)

  • @Shoknifeman Hey, thanks for the info. I actually got to learn a bit about Franco-Manitoban. I also see where the tune has already been uploaded on Youtube. Very cool!! Happy New Year!!!

  • @9thWardJukebox You're very welcome :}

  • @9thWardJukebox You're very welcome :)

  • You might be able to find a copy at Floyd's Record Shop in Ville Platte,Louisiana. There is a web site and specializes in Louisiana music

  • @Lacoona Wow!!! Floyd's Record Shop is still there???? That is so cool. May have to make a "day" trip.

  • A nice rendition of a good R&R song.

But i wouldn't call him a Cajun musician.

    Chris.

  • ...well done !

  • @Arentino dat it is!!!

  • Nice - I've heard several versions of "Colinda" incl. Pete Seeger's show (on YT)...the most recent (and my favorite) being The Tail Gaters' one.

  • @gyrofoam1 Cool. I'll check it out!

  • I have been trying to find this song for over 30 years. My oldest daughter was actually named Colinda because of this recording in the 60's, but we've never been able to find the record or any recording of this. I would love to know where I could get a copy of this record.

  • @joaniedal I assume you want the 45 RPM. If so, it's not rare and readily available on Ebay (watch out for those shipping charges) and probably on a lot of sites that sell used records. You may want to verify that it's the original version since he re-recorded it a couple of times. If it's on the Hall-Way label, it's an original. If you want a CD copy, you can find a great one buy him called Swamp Rock 'N' Roller. It's on Amazon and all songs are of the originals. Shop around for that one.

  • A brilliant track,thank you for uploading it.I am a Scotsman and I love this Music,it doesn't get any better than this,terrific,keep 'em comin',Murray

  • @dougallsdiscs Great to hear from you and I appreciate the comment. So glad you enjoy!!!!!

  • My mom plays this all the time :) Thanks for uploading it.

  • You're welcome!

  • If you're interested in other versions of this song, try this: Zdenka Vučković - Kolinda

  • Croatian almost rhymes with "Cajun". Interesting take. Thanks for the "heads up."

  • Interesting fact too is that the name of the current Croatian ambassador to USA is Kolinda (Grabar-Kitarović). And probably she was named just after that song (as it's a rare name in Croatia).

  • Great observation. New Orleans music has always been extremely popular in Europe, not sure about Cajun though nor the interest of either in Hungary. Anyway, ain't trivia stuff great??????

  • Good music is good music everywhere, and every day I discover something interesting concerning music...

  • An afterthought, I've totally forgotten that just in my region called Istria there's a band that mix folk and pop elements, and have songs (I think) akin to Cajun music with accordion. For instance try Gustafi - Kurijera. So I think that there are actually some similarities among our two folk musics

  • There are names in Southern Louisiana that exists nowhere else in N. America except the northern part of Maine (Acadia) and then into eastern Canada. Remember the other nickname we have for a large portion of Southern Louisiana is Acadiana. Acadiana is everything south of New Orleans except Jefferson, St. Bernard and Plaqumines Parishes and virtually everything west. it reaches as far north as Avoyelles Parish. So the question is, was their any mass migration from Istria to N. America?

  • Actually I think that similarity in folk music do not stem from mass migration from my region, but very simply, from the similarity in Mediterranean folk tradition, (I mean especially folk music with accordion), of Italy and France. Istria is close to Italy, and then, of course there's similarity with folk music of southern French coast. I think so.

  • I think we made a point. We need to tear down the United Nations (just to get the smell out) replace those morons with representatives who must communicate with each other with playing music from their country. I mean, isn't music more or less a universal language? I think we would then realize how small our differences really are. (Oh oh, what are we gonna do with Scotland?????)

  • I agree - absolutely. By the way, I don't know if you've mentioned Scotland just incidentally, but the music of my region of Istria (westmost part of Croatia) bears certain similarities with that country too, namely we have certain instruments, reminding in their look and sound of Scottish bagpipes...

  • I was just joking.....bad joke about bagpipes.

  • Thank you for pfor up loading this song. Rod's son has posted a few videos of his dad's past performances but he has no video of Rod performing this song.

  • It's great to see so much of Rod posted here on YT. Surprised that this one hadn't been up yet. Enjoy and thanks!

  • Thanks, glad you enjoyed!

  • I LOVE this!! Thanks for posting it!
