@collin292 I do not know exactly which riff you mean but if you have the simular fret lower or higher on an other string you can bar it. If you have to play an open string in between this ofcourse isn't a proper option. You can then always find a way to put a finger on the fret below or above. Again please take notice that a lot of Guns N Roses songs use just simple chords but Slashes picking is really hard to follow for beginners. Don't know what lvl guitarplayer you are but hope this helps.
@collin292 Barre with distortion is possible but make sure you hold it down with enough pressure. You can also palm mute it, but again don't know which riff it is. I know the song very well though ;) Good luck anyways.
That is an Tasmanian Devil dude, crazy little creature, sounds great though :-), they used the sound from the female from taronga zoo in the lord of the rings:-P.
IMHO, this technique won't replace a correct fingering. Plus, you're speaking of a "trick" yourself. Nicely worked out though. And in the end, everything's allowed what sounds nice. :-)
I never realised how simple this technique actually is... I don't know why other people make their videos sooo confusing. Love your videos, so clear and simple to follow.
That's a really good exercise! I'm gonna give that a go as soon as I can. The only problem is I have trouble with a roll that involves 3 strings on the same fret. I have a theory that there could be a wrist action involved then, but i don't know! Would help if someone could demonstrate!
You are a genius for teaching this clearly. Whoever CAME UP with rolling is an even bigger genius. Simple and powerful, WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT! :D
I've already incorporated rolling in my technique, and though I still need more practice, it does improve the sound dramatically. Thank you.
that's quite easy I think, I guess... when you get to the part you'll need to roll, to the opposite. Let's say it's the 5th fret, you hold both strings and then roll upwards.
i appreciate what your doing with your website and making it all for free, and doing a really good job of teaching and making everything as clear as possible!
Great lesson, i actually needed this one, about rolling. I've had my guitar teacher explain it, and he's really good, but the good thing about these lesson is that you can replay them all you want, and they are as professional as any guitar teacher. Thanks Justin.
Another great lesson by Justin, explaining the basis of techniques. I've really benefited from those a lot. Thanks Justin!
Just two things:
1. Any particular advices for rolling on more than 2 strings?
2. You appear to be a little bit sad in your recent lessons. Now I don't know whether it's because you're trying to focus on what you're explaining or whatever, but try to crack a smile in between exercise presentations. It makes it really easier to adopt them.
think i was just a bit tired :) I am really putting a lot of hours into the new site. Working all day writing and recording in the studio and up all night working on the web site. No sleep for the wicked :) lol
Thanks dude - glad ur all diggin it - lots more coming really soon. And new site should launch by Feb 25 :)
@theiNde Yeh. Concerning your first question. I am trying to do a roll on a power chord. For example, in the chorus riff for The Trooper by Ironmaiden you must roll a power chord.
Wicked, I've been waiting for this one since I found the site. Thanks for demystifying the roll. And here I was thinking it was some kind of evil double-jointed finger trick.
You rock dude!, I love your lessons, It helped me alot, But could you make another video on how to make scale into a song, or could you just try to teach me how to. Please Respond to this comment, Thanks :)
Great lesson Justin, and it's nice to have you back.

Nobody in particular came up with rolling. Even I discovered it by myself during my first week with the guitar. It's just common sense.

how would u roll your fingers upward? lke in canon rock?
XxMrWongBurgerxX 3 years ago

Dan1loBr 3 years ago 2
Then you don't really roll ;)
You just have your finger on the 2/3/4 strings already and then just sweep up ;) (it's for one of the sweeping parts right?)
