i recently watched You Only Live Twice for the first time since watching your series and i did really notice the comments you pointed out about Connery in the film. It was the first time I really noticed his age and boredom in the role since i began watching the series in 2001
couple things, haphazard. first, in goldeneye, 006 was out for revenge, but the huge scale bank robbery was the way that he would have got his revenge. second, you seem to have left a bit of vague opinion on who you like: connery: good, lazenby: okay, roger: iffy, dalton: incredible, pierce: once again, iffy, and by your outro in die another day, craig: excellent, but not as good as dalton. in the future, could you tell us outright your opinion, as you seem to dance around with it. thx
So, may I ask if you would consider doing individual Bond films with all of the Classic just like you did with the Worst Bonds in Brosnan's era? After you finish of course. I'd like your opinion on every single Aspect of the Bond films! Makes for VERY Entertaining Videos! And please take your Times, make them Nice & long like your later reviews, & if you need any Exclusive Remixes, I'd be up for putting in loads of effort to get you something Pro & free! If you want an example, PM me ur Email!
You Only Live Twice was the first connery bond film i ever saw, and I personally think its His best Next to Goldfinger, It had Plenty of action, Connery really did well in the action scenes the gadgets were cool and even though The Plot was a bit far-fetched It's delivery was good, and Donald Pleasance IS blofeld, He had the right look he had the voice, and his screen presence is unmatched compared to the others who followed.
Sean Connery is the best james bond but im surprised he's impressed by daniel craig. Craig has the good james bond look (no homo) like a smooth character but they should have thought out of the box more I don't blame him I just blame the people who produced it I think it would have been better if he had a better script
I agree Connery seemed to age almost over night by the time YOLT came about. He looks terrible in Diamonds. I find it hard to believe he was only five years older from Thunderball (where he looks his best) to Diamonds are forever. He looks at least fifteen years older.
THUNDERBALL for me is the best Bond movie. All the chicks are hot, the villian is great and the whole scope of the movie amazing as well as the locations and script.
I wish people would stop bashing Craig SIMPLY because he's not Connery, Craig and Dalton are actually the closest to the way Bond was originally written. All of the actors have added something to the Bond Series.
@2011TREADSTONE, Yes! I was impressed with Connery's praise for Craig and even Moore. I was never really the biggest fan of Moore until I understood that he was trying to put his own spin on Bond without rehashing what Connery did, so in that regard I can respect that. Yet some people simply can't understand that with a 40 year old franchise things need to be shook up from time to time.
My list of best bond actors: 1 Sean Connery: the first and the best he was the best bond!!! 2 Timothy Dalton: for me the only bond that came close to being the best really underated wish he did more bond films pity!! 3: Roger Moore brilliant charm to the role he was a good bond for his time!! 4 pierce Bronson overated bond nothing special was good in goldeneye but that's it!! 5 George lazenby was not bad deserved another film!! 6 Daniel craig nothing brillant average!!!!
Some Bond trivia. When Ian Fleming conceived the Bond character, he's on record as saying he visualized him as looking like the popular American songwriter ("Stardust" and many other million sellers) Hoagy Carmichael. Crazy? But if you look at the illustrations of Bond in the Fleming books, they do resemble Carmichael and Connery as well -- both with thin, angular facial features and a similar nose.
I think Thunderball and You only live twice were the best Bond movies. The girls were also very beautiful, especially the girl who played Aki. There is not and will never be an actor who can play James Bond as convincingly as Sean Connery did.
Excuse this impertinent question - but are you by any means professionally promoting anything? In that case... I'd view your efforts differently, let's say.
Are you just a private person behind the best hommage à Sean as 007 I've ever experienced!?
Was it during Goldfinger that Connery started to loose so much of his hairline? He looks different in Thunderball and he's obviously wearing a hairpiece in his next two movies, which I think is the reason why HS feels he looks past his prime, even when he was still younger than any other actor (apart from Lazenby) to play the part until Craig.
I'd feel the same way about Thunderball that HStuff feels about 'You Only Live Twice'. Thunderball just looks and feels as if everything but the kitchen sing was being thrown in, to the point where even the immaculate editing of the first three films looks like a lot of footage spliced together. Even Connery's part suffers by being almost overwhelmed by everything squeezed in. Whatever flaws YOLT has, at least if feels like a coherent story.
@Redgrant80 Nope. I realise a lot of people aren't very happy with You Only Live Twice and, besides Thunderball and Diamonds Are Forever, it's the Connery film I've watched least. But Thunderball really does feel and look so incherent compared to Terence Young's first two movies...it's just hard to swallow. YOLT may be slow and loose, but it's more watchable. Thunderball might work better if it was 3 hours long. It just feels rushed and overloaded.

Well done. However, most fans who lived through this period likely would disagree with your observations that Mr. Connery begins to show his age or is past his prime in "You Only Live Twice." The reality is that during the sixties and seventies, Sean Connery owned the James Bond identity in the way that Harrison Ford owns the Indiana Jones persona today. James Bond could only appear the way Sean Connery portrayed him. I believe that the fault lies in the lifeless screenplay, not the acting.
You almost got there. Don't forget Connery left, Lazenby came in for On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Bombed, and they lured Connery back with big money (for the time) for Diamonds Are Forever. A true Broccoli Bond film don't forget. Never Say Never Again of course was not. That was Connery thumbing his nose at the Broccoli franchise.
mmm I disagree. First of Lazanby(although he wasn't as good as MOST of the other Bonds he was half decent)and also NSNA wasn't made so Sean could "Thumb his nose at boccoli" it was made because they wanted to make sepret bond. The only reason they choose Sean was they thought that it would do better in the box office if they had a well established actor(same goes for how Roger Moore was chosen to do that extra bond film even thugh he wanted to retire)
Ruthless on analysing Connery`s ageing by the time of "You Only Live Twice" with the line: "Being (physically) past his best" at 37, but you`re right. It`s 1 of those things that you`re unconscioulsy aware of but it takes someone to actually say it before you realise.
Don`t agree with criticism of Pleasence as Blofeld, he made a big impact with v. little screen time to work with, & the cat (his only friend) was a comedy master-stroke.
Excellently done for a non professional! The narrating could be a little clearer and less monotone (it just sounds like you're a bit camera shy and need to relax a little) but the clips and information are amazing! This looks like it took "a ton" of work, but it definitely paid off! Great idea making this. 9 out of 10!
Personally I like Donald Pleasance though; he was in the Great Escape and... He was freaking Dr. Loomis for Pete's sake, one of the most bad ass characters ever, from Halloween!
Actually, Nelson played 'Jimmy Bond', an Americanized version of 007.
YOLT is a very weak film, mainly b/c of the switch in order with OHMSS and YOLT. Connery is clearly bored to death and Blofeld is very disappointing. Pleasance was a last minute substitute after a few scenes were shot with the original actor, Jan Werich. The official story is that Werich became ill but supposedly, the producers felt he was too genial for Blofeld.
I think Connery was same in you only twice I don't think he was showing his age very much I think he locked the same from his previous flims I think all Connery's Bond flims are best even if he started showing his age or not I thought you only live twice is pretty good and it's not a drag
Imo, Connery ranks #3 on my list. Roger Moore comes in second mostly because the first few Bond films I saw were Roger Moore films (I saw a few minutes of Octopussy when I was six, and then a year later saw the entirety of Man with the Golden Gun). Craig comes first on my list, simply because I feel Craig is nearer to the earliest novels. I mean yeah, right now, he's lacking some of Bond's wit, but it was there in Royale, and there are future films starring him, so we'll see where this goes.
the scene where the maker of this videos says about escape with jetpack, there are alot othee scenes from other james bond films where you would say how would he escape without gagdets like moonraker scene where they're below rocket about to be launched.
Does anybody know the real reason why conney was replaced by Rger moore to play bond I mean connery was younger not that that has anything to do with the replacedment.
that there were some minor problems with "You Only Live Twice" but I would disagree with your overall assessment of the picture. It was played straight as a pure action/adventure film and, I think, holds up very well today. The film still
exudes "the Bond aura" and not the campy goofiness which began in 1971, which was a slap in the face to Bond fans nurtured in the 60s, who had read the Fleming novels.
Yes...Luciana Paoluzzi is definitely a Bond Girl! Ditto your thoughts regarding You Only Live Twice...nice sets and score, but no substance----I think this Bond film is what inspired Mike Myers to make Austin Powers what with hollowed out volcano and all :)

Good analysis & presentation.

Actuality Sean Connery was the first actor because the 1950s bond was jimmy bond not james

Great vid! Sean Connery is the best! His style for 007 matches it perfectly, but like any other Bond actor, he got older. Great video once again!

You shouldn't put Craig at #1 for one movie no matter how good it was for all you know all of his future films could blow harder than moonraker

Hugh Jackman reminds me so much of Connery.

the scene where the maker of this videos says about escape with jetpack, there are alot othee scenes from other james bond films where you would say how would he escape without gagdets like moonraker scene where they're below rocket about to be launched.

Does anybody know the real reason why conney was replaced by Rger moore to play bond I mean connery was younger not that that has anything to do with the replacedment.
fakizer123 2 years ago
he just didn't want to play bond anymore.

Thanks for posting this, H.S.; interesting
perspectives, not boring. I would agree
that there were some minor problems with "You Only Live Twice" but I would disagree with your overall assessment of the picture. It was played straight as a pure action/adventure film and, I think, holds up very well today. The film still
exudes "the Bond aura" and not the campy goofiness which began in 1971, which was a slap in the face to Bond fans nurtured in the 60s, who had read the Fleming novels.

I totally agree with you about Luciana Paluzzi- the sexiest Bond girl ever!!
lelvish1 3 years ago
Yes...Luciana Paoluzzi is definitely a Bond Girl! Ditto your thoughts regarding You Only Live Twice...nice sets and score, but no substance----I think this Bond film is what inspired Mike Myers to make Austin Powers what with hollowed out volcano and all :)
