Can't help but laugh at the Aussie comments on here. "It's just like Gaelic Football" - any excuse.
It's like in the rugby World Cup, we beat your asses, and you claimed we cheated. Is there nothing you won't cry over if you lose at it? Seriously, lose at rugby "it's cheating", lose at International Rules - rules set by the GAA and AFL Commission - and it's "too much like Gaelic Football."
it's funny the comments made by everyone which are obviously ill-informed. Yes I admit the Irish play in an amateur league. However, the game is almost gaelic football or more inclined towards it compared to Australian rules footy. There is a round ball, rectangle oval, soccer goals, no bumping, hardly any tackling and many other rules which make it nothing like aussie rules and everything like gaelic footy.
@hawky124 yeh look what happened oz lost by 4 points in a game that is basically the same as gaa and from memory oz won 2-0 last year,if ireland played oz in a game more like AFL it would be a no contest thats why they made it more like gaa
I just realised this sport existed, I think its fuckin brilliant, to me you get the best of both styles of football, in a great hybrid, I hope this sport really makes it and becomes big.
The maxiumum weight of a soccer ball is 450 grams, the maximum weight of a Gaelic ball is 425 grams. Which is "much" lighter? - certainly not the soccer ball, which is in the shape of a sphere, LIKE the Gaelic ball. In fact, the Gaelic ball is nothing more than a rip-off of a volleyball.
THIS IS FACTS. COLD HARD FACTS. You closing your ears and saying "LALALA" isn't going to change that. You whine about your book reference, yet you cannot fathom true facts when it is there.
@omgitslukky07 Your 'facts' are wrong. I don't know or care where your getting them. There's plenty of GAA clubs in Aus, go to one and kick tbhe ball once. You'll see. And if you want to compare it to a soccer ball, throw it a few metres in the air and let it hit your head.
if u gaylick poofters think ur so good how about a challenge with an AFL ball rather then a soccer ball u would all just be scared about the 200 - nil flogging australia would give ya, then we can belt ya on the field (again) then u can cry the media (again) then u will fly home and u will know what REAL football is, not this shit version of soccer
@bones111987 It's been done. Both Meath and Kerry toured Australia and played with oval ball in previous years. Both won. I read an interview with a Kerry player who said scoring was easier with the oval ball but general play was an adjustment because you can't play it into space.
If you Aussies are so hard why did the AFL refuse to allow Brisbane Lions play that NRL side?
@ZZKe7 Actually, its never been done. Wherever you go to find a sauce for your claim, there is none. Stop spewing shit to make yourself feel better about your shitty amateur sport.
Scoring is easier with an oval ball? LOL! Fuck off, if you knew anything about physics, you would know that the trajectory of such a ball in the air is VASTLY different and more complex than that of a round ball. A round ball's trajectory/velocity is almost ALWAYS easy to predict.
@Jasexxxxx Who's gonna give me a hiding then? You??
Yes an Aussie rules ball is easier to score with - it flies farther.
It was done. Read Harry Beitzel's book for more details since there's obviously no point in me telling you 'cos you'll just stick your figners in your ears and go 'no no no.'
@ZZKe7 Australia will give you a hiding in the next International Rules.
AND NO. LOL!!! - You must have failed at PHYSICS, and SPORT. Kicking any ball really far is not a problem when using your hands (what the fuck are you? A SISSY GIRL?!) - even I could kick a plastic bottle 10 meters.
It's the TRAJECTORY that is complex. As WHERE THE BALL IS GOING TO GO, is the most important thing when scoring. Round ball = piss easy.
Also, either provide a linkable source outlining it, or fuck up. Bitch.
@Jasexxxxx How can I provide a linakble source for something that's not on the internet? It's in a printed book. Is that too much for you? I'm not gong to lose any sleep if you don't believe me - look it up yourself.
I don't give a fuck about the trajectory. A sherrin weighs less than half as much as a gaelic ball - therefore it flies farther. It's shape and the fact that it's weighted on one side mean that it sprials like an american football.
@ZZKe7 First of all, if you want to use info as fact when engaging in internet discussions, then you have to grasp the internet entirely. It's the fucking internet, if something is readable, it should be mentioned somewhere, either written or quoted by someone/a website. If not, then I can just as easily call bullshit. I can also claim something, and say it exists in a book that someone may not have heard of or have any access to. That's proper reasoning, if you don't like it, then fuck up.
AS for trajectory, if you do not care about it, then that is too bad. It's a factual basis, while your idea of rationing thinking is based on nothing but semantics. YOU mentioned SCORING, not distance. In terms of scoring, it is the way the ball travels in the air that is the most important part, NOT the distance. And even if distance was a factor, you would have be a weak fuck not to be able to kick a ball that weighs half a fucking kilogram far enough to score.
REGARDLESS, a Sherrin DOES NOT weigh LESS THAN HALF a Gaelic football. ALL OF THAT IS BULLSHIT, as a Sherrin football weighs MORE than a Gaelic football.
A Sherrin weighs 400-450 grams, whereas a Gaelic football weighs 370-425 grams.
Turns out you have no fucking idea what youre on about. I also find it hilarious that you would even propose that a Sherrin weighs less than 200 grams.
Do some research in comparisons between Aussie and Gaelic footballs before you talk shit.
A Sherrin weighs MORE than a Gaelic football. When looking at facts, a Gaelic football weighs between 370-425 grams. Have you got that into your head?
All Sherrin footballs weigh between "450g and 500g". Go to Google & type in the words "SHERRIN SAME AS EVER" & click on the first link that comes up, it will be a Herald Sun article on the weight of the Sherrin. I can't post URLs on YouTube.
You can close your ears and say "LALALA", but facts are facts. Your point is invalid!
@omgitslukky07 Mate, I have 3 recent O'Neills balls: they weigh 488 g, 498 g, and 504 g respectively. I know this because I weighed them tonight: I'm a soccer player and I was wondering 'what the fcuk?' when I was hitting them so poorly. I also have an old O'Neills from about 10 years ago that I can hit sweetly, this weighed in at 472 g. The officially described weights (and youve quoted them correctly) are wrong. The balls were dry and properly pumped. They're like medicine balls!
Now that we have established your point as being FALSE, I want to make clear that an American Football is POINTY at the ends, which is WHY it "spirals" the way it does in the air. It naturally does so. A Sherrin was crafted from a misshapen rugby ball, and was made more curved for the purpose of more BOUNCE. If you were to watch games of Aussie rules, you would know that a Sherrin travels with the ball overturning as it's in the air, thus, the ends cause the WIND RESISTANCE.
@Jasexxxxx A sherrin is more oval than it is round. It might not spiral like an american ball but it still sprials and is still weighted on one side. If they wanted to engineer the laces out it would be easy to do.
Because of this WIND RESISTANCE (you really need to take Physics classes) - the ball will lessen in speed AS it travels in distance. As a result of the ends overturning on each other, it will also CHANGE direction rapidly in the air, unless the ball is kicked right, the kick is VERY important when SCORING (did you see how I highlighted "SCORING"?).
With a round ball, the wind passes over the curves, thus, there is less wind resistance, it also travels in the air smoother.
IF ANYTHING, a ball SHOULD be heavier, as in PHYSICS, what is more dense, will travel further than what isn't, because what is dense will FORCE through the wind resistance that would hold the ball back. Do you ever wonder why balls of scrunched paper that are heavier, travels further than those that are lighter? Ever shot a spit ball with a straw?
The roundness of the Gaelic football is an advantage, ever wonder why sports cars are made more curved for speed/wind resistance?
@Jasexxxxx The roundness gives it a truer flight but my point about the manner in which it is kicked still stands. There's only one way to kick a sherrin and that's with the flat of your foot. There result will always be the same (allowing for wind).
@ZZKe7 You clearly do not understand Aussie rules.
A Sherrin spins? NO. A Sherrin will only spin if you "Torpedo" it, but while the distance increases, the accuracy is non-existent. This is very rarely used by players, but it will not spin the way it does (like a torpedo) unless you kick it specifically. A DROP PUNT, which is the most common kick, causes the ball's tips to overturn as it flies in the air (like when you chuck a stick).
There's plenty of YouTube videos on this, educate yourself.
@Jasexxxxx All you have to do is kick it hard with the flat of your foot and it goes like a bullet. There's no slice kicks or kicking round the corner like in gaelic. Give it a try before you mouth off.
And if you're going to compare me to a girl don't type "LOL" because it detracts from your argument more than a bit
You tell me to give Gaelic a try (um hello, SPHERE BALLS OF ALL WEIGHTS ARE FOUND IN GYMS HERE) accept we dont use our hands when we fucking kick them - but then you obviously point out how much of an amateur mind you have when it comes to kicking a Sherrin?
The way the Sherrin is kicked MUST be precise, as all you will end up getting is an overturning ball going insane in the air. If you want to score or prevent it from going overhead, it should be kicked precisely.
@Jasexxxxx "You tell me to give Gaelic a try (um hello, SPHERE BALLS OF ALL WEIGHTS ARE FOUND IN GYMS HERE) accept we dont use our hands when we fucking kick them - but then you obviously point out how much of an amateur mind you have when it comes to kicking a Sherrin?"
This makes no sense. The only thing I can make out is that you have round balls in gyms. Do you drive them 50 yards in gyms? I'd doubt it.
I don't get what you mean about kicking around the corner, but if you mean scoring from the corner of the ground (NOW LET'S REMEMBER, YOUR WHOLE POINT WAS ABOUT SCORING), then that exists in Aussie rules. In fact, if you want to perform a banana-kick properly to score, YOU MUST slice the ball correctly for it to traject into the air in a manner that it would allow it to curve precisely in the air to do so. There are even highlights of such kicks on YT.
As for me comparing you to a girl, you are a fucking girl. Not only were you wrong about a Sherrin weighing less than a Gaelic football (when it weighs MORE, which is actually a GOOD thing as pointed out) - you were arguing about GRAMS. FUCKING GRAMS!! - I mean, Kilos, sure. BUT GRAMS? SISSY GIRL MUCH?
Sherrin = 25 GRAMS heavier than a Gaelic football, more wind resistance due to shape.
More wind resistance = less distance and erratic movement in the air.
@Jasexxxxx Im a girl? I demand proof on the internet or it's not true.
I just skimmed this cos you've basiaclly written me a novel and the amount of grammatical errors and RANDOM use of the caps lock make it even more boring than your poor research and blind faith in internet 'facts'
@Jasexxxxx And anyway - my 'point' was not about scoring. Im relaying to you what Irish players who played with an Aussie rules ball said. Your point is that 'if it's not on the internet (and it might be, i didn't bother looking) then it didn't happen. Like I pointed out to you - you're discounting quite a lot of information with that policy
@Jasexxxxx You probably don't care but I came across an article that mentions Irish players using an oval ball. Youtube won't let me post a link, but if you type 'World footy news international rules a surprisingly long history' you'll find it. I dunno how credible the site is 'cos I saw some errors myself - but it tallys with what I read before. Meath won every game on that tour so they obviously adapted pretty well, though their opponenets would have been amateur too.

Yeah mate, its called INTERNATIONAL RULES. It is a hybrid sport, meaning it has rules from GAELIC FOOTBALL and AUSTRALIAN RULES FOOTBALL. The game is like a Aussie Rules game except there is no net, round ball or rectangular pitch in Aussie Rules. There is in Gaelic Football though.
The best AFL (aussie rules players) and GAA (gaelic football players) play a two match series every October, every year. Its a great sport!!
