And one month later (June 2002), Vince rehired Vince Russo, if only for a short while as head creative writer, shortly thereafter introducing him to the creative team, to mere consultant. He soon after quit when he realized none of his ideas were being seriously looked at. Guess McMahon was looking for a rabbit in the hat...but Hayes, Stephanie, Levesque, Heyman, and the rest of the creative team wasn't having it.
HAHA! you can hear the few people behind camera laughing when Vince asked "Do you wanna join the club?" lol!
Also, I DO wonder what Vince and the other wrestlers (or participants) think about when they are about to show their butt during the "Kiss my A***" moments.
"they dont use knives" ???? really? REALLY? so the razor blades used by wrestlers to cut themselves open are not knives? fuckin bullshit vince, ill always love the guy for everything he gave us but that was a downright lie and he is getting less and less respect in the wrestling world as time passes by.
@DarinTeven1988 He meant that they don't use knifes to attack other wrestlers, yes they use blades to cut themselves to bleed, but you don't see the blade! lol, chill out there.
The attitude era was over rated. It was what old school wrestllers call hot shotting the terroitory. It only works for a short time. To where in the old days when you presented it as a sport and gave it credibility it stayed popular for a longer period of time.
@Murphdogg4 The Attitude Era's legacy is still alive and breathing. That's why the viewing numbers aren't even as big as they were back then. The WWE pretty much is dead to me aside form Triple H, Rock, Undertaker, and Kane.
Vince helped the wrestling industry reach new heights.... but he has destroyed it in doing so.... whatever happened to just good old wrestling ?
the story lines are too much, thats why i stoped watching, plenty of soap operas on Tv that i refuse to watch... i just want wrestling action! and i think most people do.
WWE raised the bar so high in the late 90's and early 2000's that now they have to lower it. I think that could have something to do with the reason we see less hardcore matches, no blood, and a PG product. I actually enjoy the current product today. You get to see good athletic, psychological, bouts as opposed to people getting dropped on thumb tacks and old ladies giving birth to hands. Also, the product today gives them room to turn it up a notch if the competition gets tough.
@kthurst15 I am 24 years old, I just don't need to see people bleed and swear to be entertained. I can enjoy a compelling storyline and a physical, athletic bout. Don't get me wrong, I think there is a time to get edgy, but I think they started over doing it in the WWE. You had a eighty-some year old woman give birth to a hand in those days.
I agree that the WWF (sorry, it's still the WWF to me) has crossed lines. In fact, I turn it off when they do the ridiculous stuff. But, that's Vince's choice. You don't see people up in arms over what SNL does on a weekly basis, and they cross all kinds of lines. Is it needed in wrestling? Absolutely not. Does the WWF get more slack than other entertainment programs? Absolutely.
Agree, some of the things that he just said (and stuff I remembered as I turned the channel) were just too disgusting and low class. There is funny and then there is cable ready smut. I want my heros to be above me (in the storyline) and the heels to be bad but quality opponents and not brainless fools.
The kiss my ass clud is a perfect example of things being taken too far. Yes, its funny. But its too much. And it somewhat hurts that wrestlers ability to be over. After seeing them kiss someones ass, literally, it just makes it harder to take them seriously
It's been toned all the way down today. Really look at WWE's website, especially WWE kids and WWE parents. At WWE parents, they specifically say they're pushing PG content for kids.
When these kids grow up, they won't like PG anymore... that's when WWE has to reinvent itself once again, and history will repeat itself. Attitude Era type stuff won't be seen again until about 10-15 years.
@AGentertainment same thing was going on back in the early 90s , thats why wcw beat the wwf in the ratings for a few weeks . attitude era will return someday . wwe was pg all the way until 98 .
Vince sure was a damned good commentator/host/... him and mene gene okerlund really set the bar, not just for wrestling commentators, but for sports in all!
That's part of it. A lot of these guys aren't seasoned, either. I mean, during WWE's peak, most of their big stars were, while being new to the main event, near the end of their careers. Austin had been wrestling for almost ten years by the time he got to the main event. HBK, too. And Taker. WWE uses newer guys now, and in the past few years, so it's going to take a while before they're on Austin or Taker or HBK's level.
I think they should change it to World Wildlife Fun just for the hell of it and see how the now WWF reacts. (They're abbreaviation could just be FUWWF)
the attitude era was brilliant. you had your older superstars in undertaker, mankind, owen hart (rip), and then you had your up and coming superstars in the rock, stone cold, triple h. and all of these superstars had a gift on the microphone. this "pg era" is horrible because all the superstars sound so monotone and none of them give the crowd anything to get excited about. Rest In Peace World Wrestling Federation
Now dont get me wrong you guys have a point with austin being great, but in my mind the one legend who sticks out is the undertaker the guy bust his ass for the same company always being respectful and never leaving for other companies or movies although its kinda not fair seeing how austin CANT wrestle anymore
maybe in the short term, but you have to consider, hogan built the wwf, then built wcw with the nwo heel angle. @fieldofstorms When Hogan was their man, wrestling was mainstream. Saturday Nights Main Event were huge numbers on NETWORK tv. Now, only a shadow of itself.
no. hogan era was the best. followed by the attitude era i.e. stone cold, rock, goldust etc. after that it became boring and shit. i was lucky enough to be a part of both, first as a young boy, and then as a young adult. things will never be the same.
@fonzi0was0cool Huck Hogan was a terrible wrestler the only reason that ear did so well is because of the little kids they loved hulk hogan and we see that same thing happening today with John Cena
@fieldofstorms are you dumb? without the hogan era, there would be no attitude era. hogans era sold out the silverdome, hogans era set ratings records,. the attitude era did not. yes it was more edgy but it did not do better numbers than hogans era.
@chicagobears1989 no thats not true either. the aol and time warner merger put WCW out of business because AOL wanted nothing to do with pro wrestling, they saw it as lame and tacky. ECW went out of business because the stupid network they were on, TNN i believe, was sabotaging their shows and not giving them proper freedom and censoring and controlling everything. They also couldnt find another network to go on. And WCW and, well i guess in part u are right WWE was raping their roster too.
@akuma4u Well that is true to but the attitude era was hurting both ecw and wcw both companys had problems ecw had trouble with tnn and wcw with always pushing the nwo which got boring it was awesome at firs then it started to suck if their was a spike tv back then ecw the original ecw would still be on tv
Ratings are pretty much a figure head when you run a billion dollor company because the only company the WWE is losing ratings against is itself & yeah, the attitude era is still far superior from a ratings standpoint than it is today, but it has to be like that for the simple reason if WWE kept the attitude era as it was over the 10 years, ratings woulda still declined cos there be no variety. Ratings have to decrease to increase. The reason WWE is victimised is cos it's #1 & the pre-determined
structure of the business, smarts or if you prefer, internet fans lock themselves in this fantasy where they're this great booker & say this should happen & that should happen, & when it dont happen like that they moan & say its crap, but if it does happen how they say then its boring & predictable & cos its on plastered on the net national hate clubs build up like with Cena & it becomes a trend. Is the Cena era bad for ratings? From a long term perspective it's just the opposite cos the kids...
who idolise Cena today will grow into teenagers where u can expect Cena to then change & the PG rating will likely be dropped & it'll be like the 2nd attitude era & the ratings will go sky high again. By focusing on the young audience today they're developing their new fan base for years later also. End of the day like Vince said, if they dont like it dont watch it but ppl do! Wrestling is the only show that ppl watch whilst they mock it but they still like watching it. What does that tell ya?
No Competition, means PG WWE!!! the Monday Night War brought out the best in WWF/WWE!! No Competition now (TNA will not be competition for a while!!) means WWE can do whatever they want to do because they are the sole survivors!! they own (I repeat Own) the wrestling business from Jim Crockett Promotions to WCW, they own it all.
Holy hell, the shot with him and gorden Solie was classic. Vince ruled wrestling, and Jim Crockett and Ted Turner knew this. It kinda sucked because JCP (eventually becoming WCW) put out some great stuff, but Turner NEVER cared about wrestling, and there were people in charge (Ahem Jim herd) that knew nothing about the business.
He said they reached the limit on the physical shock value 20 years ago in 2002. What about "Hell in a Cell" with Mankind and The Undertaker at the 1998 KOTR?
i like costas but he's such a condesending lil prick whenever he talks to vince, i mean does he really need to preface the footage by pointing out that wrestling is scripted
Yes, and by responding like that makes you a scholar when it comes to wrestling. Brilliant indeed. :D. I mean formulating a coherent paragraph is so much more immature than calling people "fucking geeks", right? :D
Your precious "lesnar era" ended as abruptly as it began. Enjoy reliving the two full years he was in the business because they sure were memorable :D
You do realize that was the entertainment era right? The attitude era had better storylines, match build up, and overall quality than today's WWE. Matches weren't predictable, creative threw a few interesting swerves here and there, and shows made you sit at the edge of your seat.
Unlike today, where Cena could be in a handicap match against Taker, Kane, and an M1 Abrams tank, and you would know instantly how the match will end. (Cena FU's the tank.)
You are SO totally WRONG about Cena being predictable. Here is what would REALLY happen:
After Cena FU's the Abrams and gets the 123, he is placed in a Hardcore Match against the Cloverfield monster. Cloverfield squashes Cena for a couple minutes until Cena gets the momentum, does his five moves, and then makes Cloverfield tap out to the STFU. After we find out that Cloverfield ate Jeff Hardy, Cena is made Undisputed Champ with a new spinner belt for the kiddies to get their parents to buy.
vice mcmahon was so pissed off aftr those 2 clips at 4 mins, u could tell so easily with the hard gulp and facial expression, he was holding his anger back.
Because Vince never really has to answer to people in his business he comes across so stiff in these types of interviews and then when pressed gets very confrentational. Instead of being at ease he just looks and sounds like he's thinking about every single word he says and he even leans in closer to the guy doing the interview. There is a slight form of intimedation there.
Is that really needed? TNA marks need to get over themselves, as good as TNA may be, they are no competition to WWE. And at this point, TNA is hardly any different besides that stupid 6 sided ring.
I don't respect Vince McMahon the person, but Vince McMahon the businesses man and marketer I respect the hell out of. When he passes on a piece of wrestling will go with it.
I think it's bullshit that some damn company called "WORLD WILDLIFE FOUNDATION" mad the WWE change it's name from the "WORLD WRESTLING FEDERATION" TO "WORLD WRESTLING ENTERTAINMENT" i mean come on it's not like WWE was going to try and put "WORLD WILDLIFE FOUNDATION" out of business
Vince saed wrestling by destroying it. If it wasn't for him, New Japan wouldn't be big, ROH wouldn't have pure talent, TNA wouldn't be around (early tna, not another wwe version)
I can't say I ever did. The difference was is that the wrestling was good then.
Compare 2000 to 2007 ppv's. such a difference it's not even funny. There are no memorable moments from 2007, cena overcomming the odds for most of it. Batista getting 8 title shots in a row before he got it. 2000 has soooo much stuff that i remember. How old are you by the way? did you even watch attitude era?
Vince is my hero.

Thirst4first 2 years ago
structure of the business, smarts or if you prefer, internet fans lock themselves in this fantasy where they're this great booker & say this should happen & that should happen, & when it dont happen like that they moan & say its crap, but if it does happen how they say then its boring & predictable & cos its on plastered on the net national hate clubs build up like with Cena & it becomes a trend. Is the Cena era bad for ratings? From a long term perspective it's just the opposite cos the kids...
Thirst4first 2 years ago
who idolise Cena today will grow into teenagers where u can expect Cena to then change & the PG rating will likely be dropped & it'll be like the 2nd attitude era & the ratings will go sky high again. By focusing on the young audience today they're developing their new fan base for years later also. End of the day like Vince said, if they dont like it dont watch it but ppl do! Wrestling is the only show that ppl watch whilst they mock it but they still like watching it. What does that tell ya?
Thirst4first 2 years ago
No Competition, means PG WWE!!! the Monday Night War brought out the best in WWF/WWE!! No Competition now (TNA will not be competition for a while!!) means WWE can do whatever they want to do because they are the sole survivors!! they own (I repeat Own) the wrestling business from Jim Crockett Promotions to WCW, they own it all.
jaxx5000 2 years ago
Holy hell, the shot with him and gorden Solie was classic. Vince ruled wrestling, and Jim Crockett and Ted Turner knew this. It kinda sucked because JCP (eventually becoming WCW) put out some great stuff, but Turner NEVER cared about wrestling, and there were people in charge (Ahem Jim herd) that knew nothing about the business.

He said they reached the limit on the physical shock value 20 years ago in 2002. What about "Hell in a Cell" with Mankind and The Undertaker at the 1998 KOTR?

i like costas but he's such a condesending lil prick whenever he talks to vince, i mean does he really need to preface the footage by pointing out that wrestling is scripted

it makes me cry when they shove John Cena and Randy Orton down everyone's throats. I liked it better when they lost to older talent.

Yes, and by responding like that makes you a scholar when it comes to wrestling. Brilliant indeed. :D. I mean formulating a coherent paragraph is so much more immature than calling people "fucking geeks", right? :D
Your precious "lesnar era" ended as abruptly as it began. Enjoy reliving the two full years he was in the business because they sure were memorable :D
shadowarena 3 years ago
You do realize that was the entertainment era right? The attitude era had better storylines, match build up, and overall quality than today's WWE. Matches weren't predictable, creative threw a few interesting swerves here and there, and shows made you sit at the edge of your seat.
Unlike today, where Cena could be in a handicap match against Taker, Kane, and an M1 Abrams tank, and you would know instantly how the match will end. (Cena FU's the tank.)
shadowarena 3 years ago 6
Nitro era was the greatest
Besherk 3 years ago 3
You are SO totally WRONG about Cena being predictable. Here is what would REALLY happen:
After Cena FU's the Abrams and gets the 123, he is placed in a Hardcore Match against the Cloverfield monster. Cloverfield squashes Cena for a couple minutes until Cena gets the momentum, does his five moves, and then makes Cloverfield tap out to the STFU. After we find out that Cloverfield ate Jeff Hardy, Cena is made Undisputed Champ with a new spinner belt for the kiddies to get their parents to buy.

Hahahha, you know, you wouldn't be far off from the truth. Better hope creative doesn't catch wind of your ideas :-p

Wow, nice picture of Gordon Solie when he was in his prime.
HeartBreakKid1987 3 years ago 6
Because Vince never really has to answer to people in his business he comes across so stiff in these types of interviews and then when pressed gets very confrentational. Instead of being at ease he just looks and sounds like he's thinking about every single word he says and he even leans in closer to the guy doing the interview. There is a slight form of intimedation there.

Is that really needed? TNA marks need to get over themselves, as good as TNA may be, they are no competition to WWE. And at this point, TNA is hardly any different besides that stupid 6 sided ring.

The dumb kids are watching it, buying the glow sticks and T-shirts.
patluff 4 years ago
didnt you buy t-shirts and championship belts when you were a little kid and did you expect that overated attitude era to last forever
moe670 4 years ago 4
I can't say I ever did. The difference was is that the wrestling was good then.
Compare 2000 to 2007 ppv's. such a difference it's not even funny. There are no memorable moments from 2007, cena overcomming the odds for most of it. Batista getting 8 title shots in a row before he got it. 2000 has soooo much stuff that i remember. How old are you by the way? did you even watch attitude era?
