You're never too old. I started ballet at 15... and my friend is 25... she only had formal training since febuary.. and my teacher says she still has the oppertunity to be professional. These days it seems like age is becoming less of an issue... just technique. So if me and my friend work REALLY hard we want to try to be professionals :))
im 15 n totally not flexible or anything n i was losing hope of doing ballet at all but these comments really cheered me up n im DEF doing ballet in september:) GOO BALLET!!!!
I reealy wanna do ballet but I'm 14 and everyone in my class would be like 7. ANd I would be way to embarrassed to wear a leotard and show my body at all...
heya, i know how you feel, i started ballet at 10 and i was with 7 year olds im now with people my age. it doesnt matter though as long as you know your doing what you want to do. and dont worry about leotards- i wear a hoddie or a cardi over mine x
i really wanted to join ballet my entire life!!! i have been close to joining but when i looked at class times it interfered with my cheerleading practice!! i might be able to join next year and watching this video made me feel alot more confident!!! i thought i wud be too old but i guess im not!!! thanks!!!!
I've only been dancing for 2 years and I've been to a really good summer intensive called Kirov and I'm in the top level at my studio. You're NEVER too late to start !
I did ballet for 3 years, then stopped. it's four years later and I'm 13, and I hope I can find a good place for classes! the only studio near me is really bad - classes only once a week, and they're really easy.
i started really late when i was 16, and now i'm 17, i'm dancing six days a week, and i'm on pointe, and i'm working so hard to catch up to those dancers who have been dancing their whole life. just go for your dreams, and good things will come of it!!!!
i wish i could do that i did ballet from 2,5 to 10 years old, i quitted because of the other people (i was so stupid) i regret it so much :( and now im 16 i'd like to do it again but im really shy and i dont have the courage to ask my parents to sign me up again! :'(
Amen to that! I started two years ago when I was 20! I soared to the top, and continue to get better and better technically. Don't believe the lie that as you get older you can't become a great dancer. It does take more work to train your body into what it isn't used to, but its not impossible! I also don't plan on being a professional ballet dancer, but an athletic modern dancer. I don't know if it makes a difference, but it may be difficult to start late and become a balerina.
@ashmidnight AMEN TO YOU MAN!! I have a question, were you very flexible when you first started doing ballet? I want to become a ballerina lol I'm only 16 but I can't do anything until I go to college, which is all my freedom. So I'll probably start when I'm 18. So what was it like? was it extremely difficult?
i did ballet/tap when i was younger and we didnt have enough money to keep doing it. so ive been wanting to get back into it. but have been afraid to thinking im too old (even tho im only 18)
i am 16 now..when i was 5 i started ballet and i stayed for three years...but then because of family reasions i had to leave my ballet school...and i have never gone back...then later this year i had two sugerys on my ankles...i really want ballet but i dont know if my ankles would hols up....what do you think?
well it depends on what kinda surgery it was. but defo leave it at least a year after your surgeries and continue doing exercises designed for pointe shoes in your flats to build up your ankle strength.
i'm 14 years old and i was ready to go on pointe when 2 weeks ago i was doing an exercice and something happened to my muscles and my knee when out of its position!!!not ballet for three months at least, be careful!!!
i am 16 and i used to do ballet but i had to quite...then later this year i had surgey on my ankles..so my ankles are very weak and i dont know if they would with stand ballet...i want to ballet sooooooooooooo bad!!! its beenm y dream to be on pontie but and dance to the new york ballet compeny but i cant because its been 9 years scine i was in ballet and i 16 and almost full grown....what do you think? do you think ballet would help strenthen my ankles?
Haha I am 25 and this is soo encouraging me. I additioned for this tv show and actually got pretty far. i talked to some studio\s as anaheim ballet suggested and one school even said that they have know professional dancers that started at age 25. Thanks anahiem ballet.
What if you're not really flexible but want to start? I'm 15 and can't even touch my toes (but also I have more leg than torso). Would the classes help improve your flexibility, or should one be flexible to start with? Also, are there any beginning classes for people my age?
i did ballet when i was 6 and my dad made me quit when i was around 8. I was sooooo sad. i loved ballet. i haven't done it in years! im 17 now. I'd love to start ballet again:(
where is Anaheim Ballet? is it a school for people who have been doing ballet for a while or is it a school for 3yr olds to start at? do they let anybody in? i'm short)5ft 1/4inch), i have thighs, i have jut out hips, and a small poochy belly, but would i love to dance as a career! i've been dancing for 9 or 10 yrs now,and my mom hasn't been able to pay for it these past 2 months, i'll go back on Nov 1st, but i realized how hard it is to live w/o it.
Hi, i'm 15 years old and love ballet, but i dont dance. I play soccer and now that i'm in high school, i dont think that there will be any time to start dancing. Also, my father pushes soccer on me alot, i dont think that he is ever going to understand that i honestly dont want to play. My best friend is on pointe now and encourages me to tell him but i dont think that he will ever think of ballet seriously.
Im 14 and ive been doing ballet for a month now. The problem is, I'm with grade 7's. Its so diffult! And i stuggle to keep up! I would like to go to a grade 2/3 class and work my way up! Also the ballet class i do, does yearly shows... i dont want to make a fool out of myself. What should i do :)
I learn Ballet when I was 7 and stop when I was 8 because The teacher was too strict,- that was the biggest regret of my life.
I took it again when I was 15- 17, RAD Grade 5 under a different studio but They Cheated my money and did not train me for exams even though I wanted to take exams.
I'm 26 now, can I still dance?
I can manage a front split, I m quite interested to take a bAllet exam.
I love watching ballet and admire the strength and grace. I wish I could dance like this, but its not possible now since I'm already 15 and my parents don't think recreational dance would be useful...
Ugh, I love watching ballet, it's so graceful and there such strength and dedication behind it. Unfortunately there's no way for me to take a class now. I did when I was very young, but now it's too late. Plus my parents don't believe ballet would be useful (i just want to do it recreationally)...
DO IT! I never took ballet, but I just started 3 months ago at age 22...and I am overweight..which kept me from ballet at first. Ballet IS useful. it improves your posture, coordination, strengthens your body...not to mention it's beautiful and fun!!
oh i'm sooooo hapyy to hear that, i'm 15 & I was on ballet when i was 4, but i left it when i turned 6, right now i totally regret of leaving ballet and i really like it alot, and actually I thought i I was too old to start, but now you answered my question :D
hehe, well im glad to here that a well known ballerina started at 17, cuz im 16 and just got intencely interested in ballet and am enjoying ballet ALOT
im in exactly the same situation lol i started a few months before my 16th birthday and i started ballet from grade 4, which im doing the exam for next march/april. i'm lucky to actually begin at this stage!
i told my ballet teacher about this ballerina starting at 17 and she said that some people just click with ballet straight away. i already knew this but stil, kinda brought down my motivation level!!
Yes it's always been a dream of mine to dance but we could not afford it when I was growing up. I'am 34 now would it be to late for me to learn. Ballerina move with such grace. I see myself dancing in my dreams. Is it late to learn?
no you are not too late! Many schools do adult classes, in which you learnt the basic steps, how to become more limber, and begin to improve. So just look in the yellow pages for some local dance schools and ask if they do adult classes, its a great way of keeping fit!
I think its alot easier for someone who has been dancing a long time to go on pointe. I started ballet at 2 and got to go on pointe when i was 11 but i dont see why someone who hasnt started dancing at a young age shouldnt go on. I don't know for definite but i would think that if you do lots of foot excersises then it wouldnt be a problem :-)
When you go on pointe you are really commiting! A lot of dance schools put students on way to early, like 11 or 12. Usually, the students don't go up right. And could hurt themselves and their technique. Talk to your trainer and/or instructor. And just ask them. Tell them how committed you are. It'll take a few years of training first, but, if you keep your heart and mind set to it...you will go up on pointe, and it'll be sooo rewarding! So just keep it up!!
I went on pointe when i was 12 but then again i have been dancing for 11 years now and i just love ballet. It is alot of hard work but i stick your mind to it you can do it. now im 14 and considered one of the best dancers in my studio.
hey im 14 and have been dancing for 11 years and im on pointe. Yes it is possible. you just have to work your way there. build up your feet and ankles. i hope you get there some day! and i hope i helped u.
oh yay i really want to start! im 16 and have been dancing most of my life, but iv never done ballet so i thought i would be too old, but this clip showed me im not! thank you!
You'll get there! I'm 13 and I'm on pointe. It is sooo amazing! You will love it! But a year's not that much, you gotta let your feet get strong, your ballet technique needs to be great as well, but especially your feets strength. Keep training, you'll get there! Don't give up!!
i'm 22 and want to dance So bad.i have never danced before,my mother refused to pay for classes,so i always thought it's "too late""lost cause" for me,but i was determined to find a studio that would take an adult beginner.i went to the Royal Academy,2 miles from my house, got inside, saw all the dances, chickened out,and fled the studio.I was taller than everyone(though Im only 5'7)and there seemed to be already a firmly established family there.I wasnt sure I would be accepted into it. :(
Then find a diferent school! I am a professional dancer and I teach at a school in colorado where the begining adult class is my favorite to teach out of all of the levels. If you want to do it and your willing to learn then don't deny your self of that. There are a lot of different forms of dance too (even within ballet there are many very diferent techniques). And who cares if your taller or older than everyone else. Follow your heart and find the joy of dance.
Too old to start??... it depends on what you're wanting to do, don't you think?
Maybe if you want to be a professional dancer, I'm agree, but if you want to improve your flexibility, for recreation... whatever, the age doesn't really matter, I think.
i used to do ballet, but i am 13 and i want to go back in, and my friend goes to this place across the street from my house, and i went in (used these tips of course) and figured out it was good for me, so my parents are going to look into it, yay!
That's called a pirouette and I"m not a dancer///// yet lol.. but I can do it.. well I am practicing. I can do it okay and it took a while but not like forever. I've been working on an extension since May. (thats your leg straight up in the air) I'm not all the way there yet but close.
I started ballet a little while ago, and I'm in my teens. I was wondering if I'm too old to be professional. It's hard, but I love it. How late is too late to do what I want?
THANK YOU for mentioning that A LOT of schools and studios are struggling to stay open, especially in today's economy. We aren't in this for the money. We aren't out to 'nickel and dime' the parents. There is a darn good reason for every cent that we charge. It's so that we can stay in business and you, or your child can continue to dance!
Have to go teach at my own struggling studio now. All the smiling faces at my studio, every single one of them, though they are few- is priceless!
Thanks so much for this video, I always get people saying to me "aww, I wish I'd done ballet," like it's something you have to start at age 4 to do... you can dance at any age!!
i've danced since i was 2 :) and i really want to go to a dance school, but i cant beacuse of finaces :( anahiem ballet you rock :D maybe i will join you one day! ;)
I always thought I was too old, and I just really started ballet last year and Im in my early twenties and I love it! Finances are an issue, but fortunately a lot of dance school and studios have work exchange programs! Anahiem, you really do bring ballet to the masses in a tasteful, dynamic, and exciting way! THANKS SO MUC FOR ALL OF YOUR HARD WORK AND COMMITMENT TO SHARING THE GIFT OF AN ART THAT WILL CONTINUALLY STAND THE TEST OF TIME!!! BALLET IS INDESCRIBABLE!
early 20's? wow! i have always wanted to take ballet classes but i never thought i had the time, money or energy. Its still something i would like to do before its to late and im 22. too old?
Nope! It's never too late. Heck I started at 19 and it was great, I finally got in shape. Time is just a matter of planning your day, money's another planning thing, and energy is part endurance build-up and again, planning your day knowing you got class. It's all about how much you want to do it, and what you do to do it.
The ballet studio I use to work for had an adult class with people starting out as old as in their 50's and 60's. Of course they didn't want to go pro, they were just doing it for fun and exercise. So no it really is never too late to start.
well, i do want ballerinas to have puppies i suppose...
honestly, finaces probably are my biggest issue, but hopefully that'll change in the next couple months. Ballet is just so kick ass, I cant stop thinking about.
Its good to hear that some famous dancers started later!
I started as a 14 year old and might get my pointe shoes this year, and I always had in the back of my brain that since I started later, I wouldnt be as good as the other dancers, and not be able to have a career in dance.
who is the dancer who started at 13? I know Nuruyev was the one who started at 17 (although I think men are able to start later and still succeed in the professional world)
who was the first dancer who started at 13? I know Nuruyev was the dancer who started at 17 (yet I think that is is more possible for men to start later and succeed professionally...)
I only started lessons this year because my parents didn't have the money to pay for me! and I love it...I'm with people my age and the price isn't so I get to do tap, ballet and modern!
I think anyone any age can start! and you should stop yourself because of how old you are!
Anaheim ballet your podcast are great and are so encouraging and friendly! :)
wow, good idea! its really helpfull...if i had time to do ballet ^^¿, someday, jaja, too bad in the school i was, the teacher was all nice and lovely in the beggining...but thing got to hard and stressful eventually, thanks guys it was great! puppy!!

TheRaineDrop 3 years ago

Godwill3 3 years ago
That's called a pirouette and I"m not a dancer///// yet lol.. but I can do it.. well I am practicing. I can do it okay and it took a while but not like forever. I've been working on an extension since May. (thats your leg straight up in the air) I'm not all the way there yet but close.
Paka.

Ask A Ballerina-
I started ballet a little while ago, and I'm in my teens.

VanillaChai1020 3 years ago 7
early 20's? wow! i have always wanted to take ballet classes but i never thought i had the time, money or energy. Its still something i would like to do before its to late and im 22. too old?
inimitable101 3 years ago
Nope! It's never too late. Heck I started at 19 and it was great, I finally got in shape. Time is just a matter of planning your day, money's another planning thing, and energy is part endurance build-up and again, planning your day knowing you got class. It's all about how much you want to do it, and what you do to do it.
XManRCJ 3 years ago
It's never too late... I'm 23 and I've only been dancing for a couple of years!
baileymarie86 3 years ago
The ballet studio I use to work for had an adult class with people starting out as old as in their 50's and 60's. Of course they didn't want to go pro, they were just doing it for fun and exercise. So no it really is never too late to start.
yellowlemoned 3 years ago
well, i do want ballerinas to have puppies i suppose...
honestly, finaces probably are my biggest issue, but hopefully that'll change in the next couple months.

It sounds so silly now!
