  • good advice. I like his style. Watch and learn what other people do than create your own style.

  • That stinks. I thought they had to pay royalties to use any DVD commercially. Is this legal? What can be done to change this?

  • @THESHOMROM - Yes it stinks. Years ago the courts ruled that an individual who bought an original has the right to "dispose" of it in anyway they wanted ...and rental was included in the definition of dispose. While that's bad enough, I doubt that those who are doing the renting are actually buying original copies of all the DVDS they rent to others. So after years of hard work to learn their craft, the artist gets nothing for rentals. What a shame. Only a change in the law can stop it.

  • poplart.com. Nice oil paintings for sale

  • Best way to learn art, learn it yourself, be creative, learn from your mistakes, don't follow/listen what other people do on their own work, and if you do add your own style or taste to it.

  • TOOOOOO BAD IT WAS TO SHORT.

  • David, your a REAL artist. I'm a young artist, still learning, and you sir are filled with talent. The way you paint, its beautiful, and I would NEVER be able to paint and explain what I was doing, let alone in front of people. Thank you for the advice.

  • a true master artist and master instructor

  • He is a great Painter..he is a good Master....

  • Great advice. I like your direction. Teaching at two colleges it's nice to know you have the skill and knowledge to keep going.

    Sheldon Borenstein

  • They are teaching basic impressionist technique.

  • yeah i paint like him or better

  • The trouble with David Leffel's paintings is that they are highly stylized. The caricaturization is so much that it is rather cloying.

This is NOT to say that much of his work is not admirable (I was, after all, his student for years), to the contrary, there are some things he does which NO ONE can do better.

But, overall, my greatest inspiration has become John Singer Sargent because he is the most faithful to reality without resorting to devices and stylization.

  • @ejdf870 Where does he teach? And how do you get into contact with him? I would really love to study with him.

  • @jmlpaulin He now lives in Albequerque, New Mexico, I think.

I studied with him for 3+ years at The Art Students League of New York, in the early 90's.

  • @ejdf870 zorn was more faithful i think, jss had alot of flair to his style...

  • i agree he is amazing but no where near Rembrandt. no one our days can touch Rembrandt. but still just flat out awesome.

  • @N8wood1i totaly agree with you,no one can paint like rembranst nowadays even if david is awesome, the only thing that we can do is to follow rembrandt path(quite difficult also)btw David is awesome,5 stars.

  • I don't know but for me the most amzing painter is TimCantor !

  • @N8wood1 you are soooo right! I think Leffel is amazing but no one has ever come close to Rembrandt's mastery...nobody.

  • David Leffel is a genius equal to Rembrandt.

  • I just ordered the book "Oil Painting Secrets of a Master". I have great hopes that this will help my oil paintings get to his level! I cannot wait until it get's here! This is an introduction of David's work for me. I cannot wait to see more!

  • @painterinoil Did you ever get that book and how did it work out for you?

  • @gailyanne I have always read artist mags etc, but when I got the book and put Mr. Leffel's advice into practice, my art improved dramatically. I would love to meet him and take his classes. I began drawing and painting as a child without any classes. This book is very well written and David Leffel's teaching ability shines through.

  • @painterinoil are y'all talking about "reflections on the art of painting," or "oil painting secrets from a master"?

  • @jmlpaulin "Oil Painting Secrets from a Master".

  • i love the way he paints.

  • He is one of my favorate painters.

  • Rembrandt, it that you?

  • I really want to meet this man

  • so full of good artistic advice, thank you david for sharing.

  • your right about that. I love the way he pushes the paint around

  • Thank you so much for posting this video of David at work. . .he is an amazing painter!. . .and it is good to hear his calm and confident voice.
