A true Sunderland hero. He played over 600 games for Sunderland and he was cross eyed as well. not may cross eyed goal keepers can say they pulled off a save like that.
Jim Montgomery was a superb goalkeeper. Could do everything, one on ones, saved more penalties than conceded, reflexes that even Bruce Lee would have been proud of. England youth and Under 23 keeper and the biggest injustice in football was that he was not capped at full level. Nearest he came was when he was a sub in 1969. Star man in majority of Sunderland's games from early sixties to mid 70's. It was England's miss as much as Monty's
I find it funny that watching another Jim Montgomery video, he made an even better save against Blackpool previous to this match but no cameras were present.
I couldn't believe he could do better than this?!
If anyone had footage of that game somehow, then that would get millions of views on youtube like this deserves!
craig gordons save against bolton was a cracker but was still no where near as good as this double save by jim montgomery, i would of loved to av been at that match to witness a great game, and to see what the atmosphere was like aswell i bet sunderland fans were ecstatic, i get goose bumps just from watchin the video :)
Monty actually practiced lifting his body from the ground without using his hands and pushing up on his thigh to have both hands free. Quite simply, he was a brilliant reflex keeper, and this was probably the best out of innumerable great saves he made over the years, and is considered by many impartial observers to be the greatest ever. Luck didn't enter into it.
@SouthCoastMackem More people talk about this save than Porterfield's goal. Quite right too, there was no luck involved, lets not forget it was Peter Lorimer from a few yards out, Montgomery wasn't hit by the ball he (in a split second) got his hands to it and pushed the ball upwards. Breathtaking, certainly up there with the Gordon Banks save :)
@teebee1984 Monty actually believes he made an even better save at Hull two weeks before this one, similar to the Gordon Banks save. I didn't see it, and in those days cameras weren't at every League game like they are now, so the only people who saw it were those in the ground that day. Wish I'd seen it. He was a great shot-stopper (and I use the word great deliberately). How he didn't get a full England cap when inferior keepers did bewilders me to this day.
@SouthCoastMackem@SouthCoastMackem@SouthCoastMackem The occasion makes the save greater. A World Cup game against Brazil or an FA Cup Final against Leeds are the ultimate times to make saves, hence the fame it brings. I think Jimmy would have played for England if he'd been with a 'fashionable' club. Playing today he would have been capped without a doubt. I'm 99% sure we (Cardiff City) played Sunderland a few days after the Cup Final and they brought the cup with them, and we drew 2-2!
@teebee1984 It was actually a 1-1 draw, 2 days after the Cup Final, with Vic Halom scoring a second-half equaliser for us, having been 1-0 down at half time. You're absolutely right, BTW, if Monty had been with say Man U, Liverpool or Leeds (the most successful teams of the 60s and early 70s) he would have had a string of caps and would certainly have been number 2 to Gordon Banks in Mexico in 1970. Now if he had been in goal against West Germany instead of Bonetti, who knows? .......
@curlysheepishbas Where was the luck? The ball comes straight back in from the player at that time acknowledged to have the hardest shot in football. He dives towards it - in the opposite direction from where he's just been - to knock it off target. Yeah, right, lucky.....
@yeayababy its easy saying. but when a ball comes to you at speed, you cant really control the direction of the deflection unless you can defy physics.
@yeayababy Are u serious? The first is a powerfull header from only 5 meters out. You dont have time to think about where to push it. TWO great saves.
@hallbore So true. People just think he has a lot of time to decide on the save. If people watch the video again they will see the save was within the same second, it doesn't even reach from 2 to 3 seconds from the first save.
In real time people really need to put it into perspective, what did they expect him to do, catch it?! Tip it over the bar at chest height? I don't think so!
My Dad, who was 20 when we won the cup that year, said that this was the moment during the game when he truly believed we could do it. I only wish I could have seen it. An amazing save...
@ApolloniosTyaneas The header was by Trevor cherry and the shot was by Peter Lorimer, who was measured a few years before this as having the hardest shot in English football.
Easy one of the most amazing saves that I've ever seen. Strangely I hadn't heard about it before. I just seached Sunderland + FA Cup final as I've ordered the "Stokoe, Sunderland and 73" book. It does indeed deserved far more credit. Thanks for uploading!
I got jimmy Montgomery's autograph and every time I see this footage now it reminds me that I stood next to the man who made the greatest save in history
I'm a Newcastle fan and I can categorically state that that is the best save of all time. How the hell he gets up from the first save to make the second is just ridiculous!!!! Banks save is good but this puts it in the shade IMO.
@OasisLiveForever321 Leeds at the time were one of the most feared teams in Europe, but like all teams, they could and did succumb from time to time against lower-league opposition. They did the same same the next year when they lost at home to Second Division Bristol City. The fact is, though, that on the day Sunderland deserved to win, and pretty well everyone outside of Leeds rejoiced when they did.
one of the best saves ever made that and david seamen vs southampton i think it was southampton lol david seamen wud of been the laughing stock at chool 4 those who dont know look up what seamen means in the dictionary
@ruffysafc4ever I know that. Im talking about Dave Seamans save for Pescisolidithingy. If I had to choose between the 2 probably Montgomerys from the quality of player provoding the shot. Hotshot Lorimer was no slouch.
I was 3 when this happened but my dad being a sunderland fan watched this in the British legion in colwyn bay, and the stories he's told me of this game will live for me forever. I love watching highlights from this match and have it on DVD, it is the ultimate FA Cup Tie (Final) in the history of the game and I Love the way Trevor Cherry hits the ground after Monty's double save. Superb superb superb, i support MUFC, so Eff off Leeds haha.
It's such a good save that the commentator calls it as a goal. The strike is going in, there is nothing a keeper can do. Except this guy on this day. Great stuff.
this is gonna sound funny coming from a life long gooner but i watched that final live on tv and in my mind is the greatest save i have ever seen against what i regard as the best ever english football team ever to be put together don revies leeds utd.
It was totally unexpected for Sunderland to win as Leeds Utd were like Man U are now, winning everything. However, just like last weekend, the big clubs don't win everything.
def the best save ever and all overs who commented bull you would not have saved the first one it was traveling to fast and he thouight it was going to the other side
Who can say what is the best save ever? There has been many great saves. But this has got to be the best save ever seen in an FA cup final. To be fair he should have caught the first one, but the second one is impossible
tomaszewski against england in 1973, he saved nearly everything that england threw at him. best goalkeeping performance ever at wembley!!! look it up!!
The second one was good but i would have saved the first one. Gordon Banks' was miles better and there have been many better ones than this........Gregory Coupet's double save was better...search for that
Gordon Banks save is better than this. In this clip, the striker should have scored, the goal was wide open, but Peles header could not have been better placed. Therefore, I think this is more of a blunder(of course it is still a magnificent save) but Banks is still better because his save was mor impossible
No. Disagree. Both great saves but Banks flung himself to his right on the ground - not in mid-air to meet the precise path of the shot (by the player acknowledged to have the hardest shot in the game - Lorimer - with much more power than any header).
Seaman was definitely overrated. Good, but not as good as he was made out to be....Like every other Arsenal keeper ever, with the exception of Jens Lehmann.
I've seen this save probably hundreds of times and I still don't believe it. I still keep thinking that ball has to go in the back of the net. It simply can't not be a goal. Yet somehow it's saved. I cannot explain how on earth he got to that ball. He should have retired immediately after as there's no way he could ever top that. I'd have just walked off the pitch there and then! Extraordinary save.
I think it was Bobby Kerr had a laughing bag while the team were being interviewed . I so wish I could see that footage again . Has anyone else seen it or remember it.
I was stood behind that goal and I can clearly remember the save. It was just as unbelievable at the time. I wld rate it higher than Gordon Banks v Pele but admittedly I'm biased.
Waht makes it bettr is that Monty suffered from short sightedness so probably couldn't see the ball until it left he Leeds players head and the second save is just amazing.
@satanichoob If Monty had a slight weakness it was with shots from distance. I watched him for most of the time he was Sunderland's number one and his close range shot-stopping was more than a match for anyone at the time. Banks was a better positional keeper, but none of the other English keepers around at the time could touch Monty for out and out reflex saves (which he had to do, week in, week out).
I must have watched this 500 times over the years, and I still can't understand how the hell he made that second save. I'm 51 years old, I remember Yashin and Banks, but to this day I have never seen another save which comes close to this!
I watched this match on ESPN classic & after the first shot, i thought hard luck man and said 'goal' just like the commentator but I witnessed one of the best saves I evere saw!
The Leeds man lying at the post cudn't believe ot came to him that he fluffed it! lol
"and a goal, no" says it all. One of the hardest things I ever saw as a Leeds fan (and there have been a lot) but all credit to Sunderland that day. They came to play and deserved to win, particularly Montgomery. I could do without Stokoe's red sweat pants though.
@leedsfanca Your honesty does you credit. I was at Leeds Uni at the time and used to watch Leeds when I wasn't watching SAFC. If Leeds under Revie had concentrated on playing the football they were capable of, instead of needling opponents and harassing referees, they could have been the Man U of the mid 60s to mid 70s. I saw them destroy defending Champions Derby 5-0 and they just blew them away and didn't need to resort to gamesmanship. If they'd done that more often, who knows?
the second save is beyond belief, especially considering in those days there was never a goalkeeper coach, nor proper training. This save should be shown to every goalkeeper, as it shows the importance of getting up for the second save, no matter what.
as for the first save, no it is not the greatest BUT it is still a good save, getting it away from goal as far as possible, there was not much else to do.
Not only do i think this is the best save in F.A cup history but i think its the best save in football history.I'm neither a sunderland or an england fan,but i am a goalkeeper and this to me is a dream and always brings a tear to my eye.BEST GOALKEEPING MOMENT EVER,jim montgomery we salute you.
I agree. I am from Sunderland, but nevertheless unbaised. That was even better than Gordan Banks´ brilliant save against Pele in 1970. just unbelievable! Lovely memories.
Yes I totally agree. I just think this save deserves so much more credit than it gets. This deserves so many more views. Thank you for the comment. Keep them coming. I think this clip should be seen by all footy fans

If they'd done that more often, who knows?

they were both great saves the 1st 1 was ok maybe he could have done better but he got as far away as possible.
The secind completely made up for it because his reactions is just so perfect.

the second save is beyond belief, especially considering in those days there was never a goalkeeper coach, nor proper training. This save should be shown to every goalkeeper, as it shows the importance of getting up for the second save, no matter what.
as for the first save, no it is not the greatest BUT it is still a good save, getting it away from goal as far as possible, there was not much else to do.
absolute legend

I agree. I am from Sunderland, but nevertheless unbaised. That was even better than Gordan Banks´ brilliant save against Pele in 1970. just unbelievable! Lovely memories.
God bless!! :-)
