Yes I agree. I would just go for the P.A, not because I don't like Hi-fi, thats much more clean sound you will get from that, when P.A is more distorted. But P.A do never disappoint me, thats why.
Hey, how many feet away was the 122db read at? You laughed when kalosanin2 said I'd love to put that in my room. So here's my question for you.. take that system and shove it into a small room say 50 foot by 50 foot. what do you think it could do then DB wise? what hurdles do you see that you'd need to that to have your system perform well and sound good in that small of room?
@mikehoncho119 this was measured about 40m (120 ft) from the PA, the far end of venue. If you have 50 by 50 ft place you definately will not need system that size, you would easy hit 130 dB and I'm not sure if this is what you really want. At this level you can't tell any difference if it sounds good or bad, your single wish is to get out of that hardcore.
@BasherCoon Yes, but that is with car audio/hi-fi systems. Thats not the same as P.A systems. If your playing 160 db with a PA System, it feels like 200 db for your ears..
@maciiol2 This statement defies all logic. 160 db measured is 160 db. It doesn't matter where the sound comes from.
You also realize that nothing can sound like 200db, because the top-end threshold for A-weighted decibels in Earth's atmosphere is just over 191db. Beyond 191db you're simply pressurizing air with acoustic energy, not generating more sound.
@maciiol2 What makes 'PA' different is signal and power clipping, which is found commonly in PA/sound reinforcement systems. These things are the antithesis of what good sound is, and thus why it's more grating on your ears-- distortion is painful, sound pressure isn't.
@BasherCoon Thats true. But P.A systems do also have a lot larger range, when it is about spreading the noise. Thats why you don't use Hi-fi systems for large Party's.
@maciiol2 PA systems can throw 'moderately' loud sound a long way--and this point I will concede. I do have to say that hi-fi stereos do well for house parties and anywhere you don't have to fill a very large space with sound (for spaces around 1500 square feet of high ceilings it will work, though). Any bigger, a PA or reinforcement system would be necessary. Reaching into the 140+db territory is pretty well reserved for car audio and the most extreme concert audio systems, however.
@BasherCoon Yes I agree. I would just go for the P.A, not because I don't like Hi-fi, thats much more clean sound you will get from that, when P.A is more distorted. But P.A do never disappoint me, thats why.
@BasherCoon bass doesn't sound as loud for the dB or damage your hearing as much. Though 160dB is pretty extreme and systems that loud are just like one big subwoofer box on wheels. With highs, 115dB will fill your entire brain with noise, that is about the loudest sensation of loudness, it just starts to tickle your ears then. 130+dB of highs is someone screaming in your ear.
@DJfive5six you're right. So far we don't have any institution like OSHA in our country, but if we would we had to have much more safety equipment. And I think one day we will
It's a good system, but JBL VERTEC is superior, lightweight, more sound, and very long life so easy to sell in 2nd hand, and the 50 years of JBL knowledge
@organeu, some time ago JBL had neat products, but joining Harman took all good things away instantly. Vertec is just superior and lightweight, there is not much to do with sound. HF drivers are terrible, LF & MF - so, so.
@ddfflv I completely disagree. At our Church, we have 2 JBL Vertec hangs, (left and right) each one with 5 VT4888 and 1 VT4887A, and 2 VT4880 Subs hanging in the center. Each line array's get it's own Crown I-T12000 HD, and each sub gets one too, giving us 4 I-T12000 HD, with aprox. 42 000 watts. (Including amps for the delay speakers) And I have to say, they sound absolutely amazing in a live environment. Crisp highs, low ends... And that was the first Sunday!
@americaneagle791 well, that is nice system indeed. Do you have experience with other rigs as well? For example d&b, Meyer, L'acoustics, Martin? I've been mixing on most these systems and I would not put JBL on top of the list. But in the same time I know many engineers that would, and I respect their oppinion.
@ddfflv We were actually going to go with a dnb rig, but decided to switch last minute. I was expecting to hear a difference and was kind of disappointed. But as soon as I started soundcheck, I was amazed and didn't find much of a difference at all. Your right. I'm not throwing JBL on the top of the list, but I'm just saying they deserve a little bit more credit for what they are.
@ddfflv We weren't using the DigiDesign SC-48 that the Church purchased for the system, because it wasn't in yet, so we didn't have any tuning either. Yet still, the compliments just kept on pouring in. Even with 2 acoustic guitars, a bass, and each musician singing as well, I was able to get a nice, clean, powerful mix. I was able to do things with the sound that I was never able to do on our old system...
well if you put 20 sound engineers in a room you'd propably get 20 different best brands so that remains an infinite point of discussion,
also your home country plays a role in that, american systems tend to be very aggressive according to european standards and european systems tend to sound a lot smoother (both systems natively with 0 EQ by the way.)
anyhow, vertec indeed remains a very very very nice system to work with ;)
@MzC6w580iuser sure it is! Outdoors you usually have supports or stage truss to climb - indors it's either lifting equipment or climbing the line array. Both works for us!
@ddfflv ok i know ... but i never see people who climbing up using line array speaker handles... btw i think: if when the systems are on the ground sound crew can do all thing what they must done for correct rigged and plugged system... maybe my thinking it's wrong... i'm not working in sound/light company and i unfortunately can't work beacouse i'm only 16 years old and i don't know everything...
@MzC6w580iuser , well this is more popular with Vertec system - their handles are designed as stairs :] I've seen this several times. Basically the only reason to get up there is when chain comes out of chain bag. There is not much anything else you could do up there. However, if you're operating old Lodestar with shitty contactors you'd want to get down your stuff...
wow what company is this? surely it isn't Meyer Sound... and kick ass line array set up. and do you guys use system architect with your DSP's. also 122db is ridiculous! i bet some people had some fun with that considering 120db is usually talked about being the threshold for pain, but at least at that volume you don't have an noticeable echo right lol
@TheSigp220, the speakers are made by Next Pro Audio - construction and components are close to Martin W8LC. Amps and processing is QSC for array, and Powersoft with their DSP for subs. And I agree 122 dB is hell of a noise, but since there is no regulations for SPL we let promoter to have what he wanted.
Thanks for all good comments, sorry - I've been away for some time, but appreciate you like this, will put some more. We have done nice jobs this summer, lot to report.
@craneywatch , you're damn right. We got 3 engineers with huge experience in our team. And even a degree is not enough, it takes annual seminars, certification and extra skill to be gained all arround the world. Too bad, just some people realize that this job isn't much different from flying plane or heart surgery - it needs lot of knowledge and experience. I'm in this for 20 years and just now it starts to sound more less OK.
@ddfflv I have my own condensed microphone, and I tried to make some decent chart recording from it. I never realized how it is not easy to make one single decent audio recording. I think that you in your 20 years of audio experience have done it many times.
well, regarding the rigging method - basically there is extra force on last 2 wheels, but rest of construction has no signs of being overloaded. Glad you like. Will post some more :)
I have to say I really dont agree with this manner of deployment though I have seen it used a fair amount. It seems there is a lot of force on the rigging in directions other than that of its intended use. It is a nice tidy system though. And holy crap 122 db C weighted. Sheesh thats loud.
