I hate the 'big society' idea, just like I hated Thatcher's 'Me' culture and her idea that the 'state is your servant, not your master'. Creates too much greed and selfishness imo.

In the U.S., we're spending twice as much on K-12 education per student (yes, that's adjusted for inflation) as we did 30 years ago. At some point, people must realize that Western governments are simply borrowing money from future generations in order to satisfy this generation's peculiar notions about social justice and equality. My friends, equality should not be the goal, liberty should be.
He's mentioning "Metroplis". I mean how cool is that??? Beside the fact that it is a German movie from the 20s/30s.... It just shows how educated he must be (and don't tell me he's an actor and therefore he has to know his job's past because it really isn't something you can take for granted). And I totally agree that there shouldn't be these cuts! Even we in Germany heard of the increasing study fees in England and that really isn't the way education should be.
Increasing spending past a certain point may or may not lead to better results, but slashing spending by substantial amounts very clearly does lead to inferior quality graduates. I'm from the US and the current state of my country is in large part the result of more than a generation of steadily declining quality of education. Once you stop making education a #1 priority that's it, your country is done. It's just a slow death from that point on.

As a Canadian who thinks of the UK as a second home, I have to say I agree with him in the fear that the arts and other things such as health care and education are going to become something only the rich can afford. I hope the people of the UK can pull together to fight these cuts - there has got to be another way, other than making cuts that will destroy equality and unravel society.
