@fmoa I remember watching early UFC fights with some friends. My friends were in awe and thinking that Royce and BJJ were the best thing since ice cream. I was not amazed. As a judoka I knew that stand up fighters were usually toast once they got on the mat. What amazed me were all the stand up fighters trying to go to the mat and win against Royce. Heck Royce suckered them to the ground by falling himself in most cases.

The aim is to put your opponent in a position where he feels he cannot continue. Like a "check mate" in chess. In most cases, if you have a choke or a joint-lock on an opponent, they "tap out" to signify that they admit defeat. In some cases, like this one, people do not want to tap and sometimes they are choked unconcious or have a limb broken. The aim isn't to hurt your opponent in a tournament. In real life, you do what you have to.
