@FSPlata24 Luxury tax isn't determined by contracts. It's determined by a team's annual salary. Quite simply, if the total amount paid to players for one year exceeds the threshold ($155 million in 2009) then that team is subjected to paying a luxury tax. The Red Sox may not pay as much, but they still pay a gratuitous amount. Like I said, Donald Trump vs. Bill Gates.
And the Red Sox have had to pay luxury tax four times (2004-2007) since its inception in 2003. They're not a good example here.

Remember, they unloaded Pavano, Giambi, Abreu, Mussina, and Ivan Rodriguez after 2008. The $400 million you're referring to is the total for the long-term contracts, which will be paid off over a period of eight years. It was not the team payroll for 2009, which is actually lower than it was in 2008 ($209 million).

I don't know if they got under $170 million, but they were over it...then again, trying to avoid the tax explains their unwillingness to do anything at the trade deadline...which also explains their absence from the postseason this year, barring a complete collapse by the Rays and Yankees.
