Siepi's Don G simply was unsurpassed!

I had high hope for Kwiecien, but nay, he could not surpass Siepi.

Caesare Siepi, Furtwängler, Erna Berger, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, the top of opera. I had seen this at "Salzburger Festspiele". My opinion is that Caesare Siepi was one of the best in this roll, and Furtwängler made the right tempo, because he was not so fast as the most others.

Thanks for posting, this belongs on YT. I have the DVD, and the first time I watched it, it obsessed me for weeks. The conducting is the work of a genius. Siepi and Furtwangler are some of just a handful of musicians on record who could REALLY bring Mozart's masterpiece to life.

I, too, am sorry for his passing. A glorious voice to be challenged by few.

The best Don Giovanni ever. He had the right voice, spirit, interpretation, and excellent taste in Mozartean singing. In general Siepi was the very best basso cantante of the post war period.
