@acmna Once again you didn't even listen to what he said. What he said was that the YMCA stands for Young Men's Christian Association, because when it was first founded it was for young Christian men. Then he mentions the Village People song which came out in the 70s and mentions the YMCA shift away from Christian association to allowing anybody. Which as Penn would say is absolute 100% not bullshit. So I'm pretty sure Penn doesn't think that the YMCA discriminates in the present.
This mosque is a war monument. Letting them build it will only embolden them to do more suicide bombings and more death threats towards South Park. Pretending like the sand fascists are not at war with us will not work.

While I agree with your position Penn, this video was very disappointing. Your attempts to frame a false dichotomy with your liberal "friends" is a transparent attempt to create fake dissonance where none (or "none worth mentioning") exists. You are feeding the unhealthy discourse that is making this country stupid.
In the future ANYTIME you feel yourself about to say, "Liberals do/say this, Conservatives do/say this, Libertarians do/say this, etc".....shut your mouth. You look foolish.
Penn, with all due respect, that mosque is about as much of a "cultural center", as the Spanish Inquisition was "tough love for heretics.".
I do agree with that the Muslims should be allowed to build it. If they display their uncivilized manners and concepts to the world through their displays of dogmatic hatred, the people will understand that they're a minority for a reason, and that reason is not bigotry.
being fromthe south i appretiate that penn made such a point about "redneck" it doesn't bother me too much when people use it but it's nice to see someone in show business who shows us a little respect.
Agnosticism Athiesm Deism Pantheism and so ism are just labels to devide people, who fuckin cares what other people think humans created religions for control over other Humans.
@ALfaDuB101 "humans created religions for control over other humans." You just answered your own question: "controlled by other humans". THAT is why you have to "fuckin care", unless you enjoy being controlled by other people's insane beliefs.
@kossmikham as i said who fuckin cares i dont buy into all that shit therefore i cant be controlled by OTHER PEOPLES beliefs but they can believe what they want.
Fuck religion AND fuck all religious people. The two go hand in hand. Without religious people THERE WOULD BE NO RELIGION. The concept of religion by itself is meaningless.
Religion would be completely irrelevant until some asshole starts practicing it and subsequently shoving it down everybody else's throats, as religious assholes are known and likely to do. So fuck them all, the diluted morons.
@PolitcalIslam Hindus believe in all kinds of weird shit. Belief in weird shit is not exactly good. And that racist caste system that you casually gloss over and dismiss IS RACISM. How is that not "anything bad"?
@PolitcalIslam "The ONLY bad thing"? That's like when Marion Berry (the ousted mayor of DC) once said: "except for the murders, crime level in DC is not high". Of course he himself was high on crack when he said that, as he usually was.
Why would you choose to give a pass to a belief system on a major fault like sanctioned racism? Are YOU high on crack? Or are you just racist yourself and it comes naturally to you?
@kossmikham Allah forbids me from doing crack, but, yes, I am high off of the Koran..., and most Hindus ignore the caste system, today. All religion but atheistic Islam is bad.
And I don't know if you're just pissed off at these people because they're showing such disrespect or if you really think the government should stop them. It seems like the former, in which case I completely respect your position.
It is not even about freedom of religion, it is about more important principle: private ownership. If they own that piece of Manhattan, they can built there whatever fuck they want. That's why i wa angered when Switzerland banned the construction of Minarets. I really dislike Islam, but property rights are more important.
Penn, the reason they say it's assholish behavior is because "he's targeting a minority."
But the big problem from the whole debate isn't the legality of it (it's a lost cause), it's the rubbing salt in the wound where they're offered MILLIONS OF DOLLARS to move the mosque (w/e) a few blocks away, and they turn it down.
The POSITION is more important to them than simply having it built.
And that leads to a whole slew of religious conspiracy theories which only enrage people and do no good.
@sabata2 If they own the land and want to build a mosque there with a giant mural of the 9/11 attacks on the side, what would be the problem? If their purpose is to "rub salt in the wound" and be offensive, then they have the right to do that.
@sabata2 When did I imply I would have a problem with that? If someone wants to build a gay bar next to it on land they own, have at it! I'm simply against using the legal system to stop something being built because it offends people. Exercising one's rights/freedoms should never require justification.
You didn't. It's the people who support the muslims in building the mosque, but say the gay bar is offensive that was more directed too.
I know I can't do anything about the mosque even though I'm very against it. But when I show support for the gay bar "retaliation", oft-times I get insults from the same people supporting the muslims.
@sabata2 That clears things up, I can appreciate your frustration with that kind of hypocritical attitude. And don't get me wrong, I can't and don't blame you for finding the mosque offensive, especially if you perceive it as adding insult to injury(and that may be the case, I have no clue about the motivations behind it). I'm just not bothered personally by it, and don't think the government should be able to stop them. That kind of censorship is one more step down a dangerous road.
You know what I can people who don't have ADHD? Slow. That's right. I'm putting all of you non-ADD people in the same group. What? Your brain can't keep up? Sure, I forget things easier, but that's because I've moved on and you're still stuck on some old idea. LOL.
Penn took the words right out of my mind/mouth. He's just a few hundred years ahead of his time but that's always like that with people who have high IQ's. In a few thousand years when we are all 1nation+1people, religion won't matter.
Here in Iceland we have the same "problem", muslims want to build a Mosk/prayerhouse but I think in the last poll 80% were against it! - But who cares, believe what you want, pray to what you want, blacks, whites, gays, straight, muslims - Who Cares!!!
You think it's offensive that some orgs are not being ROBBED by the government (because being tax exempt simply means you are allowed to keep your OWN MONEY).
I don't. I think it's offensive that everybody else is NOT tax exempt.
No word of love in the Koran Mr Penn. You could at least adress that sir. BTW, you shouldn't say F*#@ religion unless you would like others to say fuck atheism.
You pace back and fourth like a caged polar bear, you should do this thing outside where you feel free. The Muslims would consider you an infidel right, being an atheist and all? They cut off the heads of infidels. I would never do that to a big teddy bear like you, I'm a Christian. We are taught cool things like love one another and don't kill or steal, stuff like that.
I like and agree with Penn on many issues. The problem I have with this is how do you respect all people at the same time you hate all religion? The act of talking bad about religion will without a doubt show disrespect to alot of people. Just curious maybe I am not getting something. That would not be a first.
@Spookydws I was thinking the same thing after I heard him say he doesn't have anything against 'people',just religion. To me that doesn't make sense, it sounds as though the people aren't able to make their own minds up, I say (knowing how f*d up Islam is), that I do not respect that religion and Muslims as well...unless they're not really Muslims and don't even believe in all the Koranic bs. Someone's beliefs are not safe from judgment...imagine how much respect you'd have for a flatearth-ist?
For some reason liberals adamantly defend islam even though they usually denounce other religions. I guess its just their contrarian attitudes. They feel like conservatives hate muslims so they have to love them. Its really ironic considering liberals are usually all about womens/gay rights and islamic countries don't exactly have the best track record when it comes to human rights.
@StewartLucrative It has more to do with people associating Islam and Muslims with being 'down trodden' - in the same way that liberals view society by splitting it into two groups in opposition to each other; rich versus poor, black versus white, western values versus everything else.
@Azrayel000 r u dead? how many people u know have been killed? I can tell you hundreds of people imprisoned, tortured or had their lives ruined by the 'Patriot Act'
2:45 -- true but what about giving "churches" tax exemptions?
I think that's bullshit...yeah I may be going on a tangent but I would encourage people use the legal system to stop "churches" (scientology!) from getting tax exemptions. I know this is dealing with freedom of speech though :P
Nice moral equivalence, a baptist church on ground zero is just as bad as a mosque. Really? Were the sub-human vermin who knocked down those towers christians acting in the name of jesus? No, they were muslims working for allah and muhammed and now they want monument on the site of their 'victory' . I hate all religions but while some are just annoying one in particular is downright deadly and I wish Penn Jillette had the sack to denounce islam for the revolting cancer it is.
wow this is the first time Penn was not wearing the black dicky shirt. my theory is Penn recorded all of his previous videos in rapid succession in one day and now we are starting to see the fruits of his labor on Day 3 (Day 2 being Naked Elvis and Chimpanzee Party Day to celebrate.) And this doesn't include his show or his live show or the other thing, Penn is so badass!
@pseudonym4yt If you knew anything about Penn Jillette, you would know he is the furthest thing from a leftist. He doesn't even like Obama. He is a libertarian.
@ColemanMulkerin What exactly is it about Fox that you're okay with? The yellow-journalism? The quote mining? The sheer amount of bias and prejudice? Fox is the most corrupt "news" outlet in America.
@samusssbm85 Is that an honest question or just a knee jerk response? I'll just assume honest, I think fox did as well as the NYPost, can't remember anyone else off hand. I haven't payed much attention to news lately.. its all talking heads which is nauseating.
As far as Fox, if one group has MSNBC, CNN, NBC, etc. let another group have FOX.
AGAIN, besides permits, only reason thy should be stopped is if the ALLEGATIONS of terror funding is true. They have their right as most people have said
This is a good argument if the only people you are speaking to are Atheists, but the issue of the Mosque isn't being debated by Atheists. How do you convince the hyper sensitive, memorized Christians that object to the Mosque that Muslims should have the same rights as they do? If you were to ask them, "Should Muslims be allowed American citizenship," many would tell you without pause a big fat NO.
BTW: "Respect People, Not Religion" is a great Anti-Theist mantra.
I don't understand why Penn is always going on about "liberal this, liberal that." I would call myself a liberal and I would agree with nearly every sentiment that he expressed. I generally agree with him on most issues, and I like Islam about as much as I like an inner ear infection. But Penn and I agree that Muslims have the right to build their Community Centers/mosques/gay bars. Penn should be a little less sweeping with the word "liberal".
@cali9fiftyone Actually agnostic means you don't know whether there is a god. Not that you believe in god but not religion. That's basically non-religious.
It's when you believe in a God as the perpetual Observer required in Philosophy, but not that it has any representation or actual control over the earth.
@UncleFred34 Not true, there are many forms of belief in god without religion, such as pantheism. Deism is the belief that a higher power created the universe (which can be proven) but did not intervene after that.
@arithine Believing in god but not religion is more deistic than anything. You believe in the original creator, but you don't hold any texts to be infallible.
@TheStann I believe i answered this when responding to unclefred, there are many different beliefs which claim a gods existence but does not hold to given texts, such as pantheism, deism is only one of those.
Would anyone give a shit about a Christian church being built near the site of the Oklahoma City Bombings? Of course not. So what's the fucking difference?
still the religious so called conservatives here in the states will attack Pres.Obama remember when work with community centers in chicago.the Puritans(republicans)went shit on their pants or dresses.
Can't believe you backed down and discussed this gorram mosque.
I agree though, Legally he has the right to build a giant mosque with Osama's face on it if he wants to, and legally you have the right to call him a dick for doing so. What's legal, what's right and what's kind and respectful are different things. This is clearly causing offence so maybe, if his primary motivation was making people like him, he shouldn't do it, but it isn't, so fuck him.
Now here's one Pennpoint, where I'm in 100% agreement with Penn. Just about everyone OTHER than Penn who has opened their mouth on the subject has annoyed and irritated me. I can disagree with people, but I hate when people can't see the inherent dissonance withih their own opinions.
@atl236136 Alex Jones has the exact same opinion as Penn. He also supported the pastor's right to burn the Koran, but like Penn, Alex thinks both acts are extremely disrespectful.
When both the left and the right are wrong, the conspiracy guys and the libertarians are right. (all the time that is)
3:10 we should ABSOLUTELY use the legal system against religious groups in certain situations. The next idiot who doesnt take their kids to the doctor because of their stupid beliefs resulting in the kid dying should be punished to the full extent.
Would being against that wacko in Florida burning the Koran out of respect be respect towards religion or respect to people (because, at least in the mind of people who don't follow the Koran, people made the book holy)?
Also, I don't watch a lot of Fox News (I don't like the way everything is a "FOX NEWS ALERT!"), but I love the way you point out the way that liberals seem to go out of their way (and against their own beliefs) to trash it.
@tybo09 The constitutional/libertarian approach to the Koran burning is to allow him to do it, and complain about him doing it.(or not, fuck Islam) I would suggest that a bunch of muslims go down there and burn Bibles right beside him and see what happens.
I was thinking about asking you for your view, too. Right now, it seems that only Christians, Jews, and Muslims are weighing in on it, I figure an atheist could give a different (and probably more objective view) on it.
The (debatable) argument in the other direction is that we are at war with fundamentalist Islam and the building of this mosque will provide aid and comfort to the enemy. I've heard it compared to a Shinto shrine being constructed at Pearl Harbor. If the builders were very clear about their opposition to violence then I would have no problem with them building a "cultural center", which has a mosque so I don't know why that's brought up.
@incrediblemulk42 Uhh, the Japanese have every right to build a shinto shrine at Pearl Harbour... as long as they own the land. Upsetting people isn't against the law, nor should it be. How exactly is a mosque in America providing aide and comfort to an enemy that is over an ocean, halfway across the world?
Also I am amazed you believe that Pearl Harbour is still a big deal, that one was paid back 100 fold at least with the bombs. Same with the wars for 9/11...
Yeah, the YMCA doesn't do that anymore. They just use the letters. They don't use the whole "Young Mens Christian Association" tag anymore. They don't care whose money it is because all money is the same. It's just an exercise business now.
I actually agree with building a gay strip bar next to this community center: It seem to be a good market for that and if it respect the city laws it is fine.
"christians and the government fighting each other-- go for it!"
Ah, Carlin. I miss that old bastard almost daily.
He saw the "government" for what it was: a conglomerate of corporations and upper class "club members" who control everything and can easily manipulate the masses into continuing to move the balance of power in their favor.
Political ad campaigns, polling, etc-- it's all for the benefit of a few who have convinced people that their best interests are vile and greed is good.
Why do so many people couch this issue in terms of whether or not they have a "right" to do this? No one (I know of) has EVER questioned their Constitutional rights. It's simply not the issue at all. Is it because they don't want to express their opinion on whether or not they SHOULD build it there, so they pound their fists on the table expressing an opinion no one disagrees with in the first place?
@DuaneEH Well... Newt Gingrich said they should look for ways to stop the mosque through the legal system (sneaky, stupid ways). Some people tried to get the dilapidated building named a "historical monument" (something like that) so it couldn't be turned into a mosque.
Also, a lot of people don't have a distinction in their head between "I don't like it" and "there oughtta be a law!".
I agree with Penn 100%. They have the right to build the Mosque, it's private property after all, but that doesn't mean people can't be outraged by it and privately protest it without the government get involved. Unpopular ideas deserve to be countered with a free market of ideas.
Also, Greg Gutfeld is one of my heros. His late night show on Fox News, "Red Eye" is seriously my favorite TV show. Consistently hilarious, witty with great panelists (Penn has been on several times).
showing respect and love for religion is respect/love for IGNORANCE.
I think religion should be reduced to mere opinion of belief.
It may be opinionated, as it is subjective, not objective (according to the supers)
It must remain a hypothesis, not a theory; which is a fact.
It must never be forced onto submission upon others, and it must never interfere with the absolute FACT and education. Fight for freedom of belief, not religion.
@silverhawkroman you can fight for both....but keep education a much higher priority and if religion gets in the way then facts should override religion...
@Isuckatpaintball2 No man, religion should have absolutely no priority. it should be treated as mere recreation (like watching tv).
The only thing you're gonna get out of religion is fear of hell, maybe some discipline (but discipline should be handled by schools and not by preaching)
Freedom of belief is the way, freedom of religion? hell no.
@silverhawkroman so you said no freedom of religion that means that you can't choose what to believe in i never said religion should have a priority only the freedom to choose it
@arithine Dont generalize, my friend. We all have our reasons/arguments for thinking what we think. I believe in freedom of belief, as it is merely subjective.
But most religions seek to make that subjective matter, objective, even if the evidence contradicts fact or even physics.
@silverhawkroman How was I generalizing? I didn't say all atheists believe in freedom of religion, I just pointed out the fact that you are the first one I have encountered that does not. Here are your words "freedom of religion? hell no."
I personally don't agree with many religious beliefs but I accept that they have the right to have them. Because lets face it, if you want to have the right to choose not to have a religion others have to have the right to choose any religion they want to.
i watch foxnews but yea im kinda starting hating them for being such effing haters and UNfair & unbalanced about everything.. fox&friends is the only show that is actually nice
Religion is supposed to support peace and love but in reality it causes wars and hatred of fellow mankind..
Obviously there is a lot of good that comes from religion as well.. I'm not bashing anyone's religion. Believe what you choose to believe and be happy. Peace and love
and i will show respact to rielagen

What I find offensive about all religous orgs in most of our countries around the world is they are tax-exempt...now that is some BULLSHIT.
i'm in favour of actual charitble orginizations being tax-exempt as well as donations to said orginizations.
But these groups that go to the poor with food in one hand and a bible in the other can just fuck off.
OneWarmDragon 1 year ago
@OneWarmDragon

1fourfreedom 1 year ago

Spookydws 1 year ago
@Spookydws I was thinking the same thing after I heard him say he doesn't have anything against 'people',just religion. To me that doesn't make sense, it sounds as though the people aren't able to make their own minds up, I say (knowing how f*d up Islam is), that I do not respect that religion and Muslims as well...unless they're not really Muslims and don't even believe in all the Koranic bs. Someone's beliefs are not safe from judgment...imagine how much respect you'd have for a flatearth-ist?
JeanLouie1106 1 year ago
For some reason liberals adamantly defend islam even though they usually denounce other religions. I guess its just their contrarian attitudes. They feel like conservatives hate muslims so they have to love them. Its really ironic considering liberals are usually all about womens/gay rights and islamic countries don't exactly have the best track record when it comes to human rights.
StewartLucrative 1 year ago
@StewartLucrative It has more to do with people associating Islam and Muslims with being 'down trodden' - in the same way that liberals view society by splitting it into two groups in opposition to each other; rich versus poor, black versus white, western values versus everything else.

Build what they want, they have the legal right. I have 2 problems with it though:
1) In my opinion it is in bad taste (but still legal)
2) If money is coming from groups related to terrorism THAT is a legal problem
Irishscott99 1 year ago
@Irishscott99 Who said the money is coming from terrorists? Fox news?
samusssbm85 1 year ago
@samusssbm85 Is that an honest question or just a knee jerk response? I'll just assume honest, I think fox did as well as the NYPost, can't remember anyone else off hand. I haven't payed much attention to news lately.. its all talking heads which is nauseating.
As far as Fox, if one group has MSNBC, CNN, NBC, etc. let another group have FOX.
AGAIN, besides permits, only reason thy should be stopped is if the ALLEGATIONS of terror funding is true. They have their right as most people have said
Irishscott99 1 year ago

UncleFred34 11 months ago
@UncleFred34 Not true, there are many forms of belief in god without religion, such as pantheism. Deism is the belief that a higher power created the universe (which can be proven) but did not intervene after that.

@arithine Ahh, you are right. My mistake.

@arithine Believing in god but not religion is more deistic than anything. You believe in the original creator, but you don't hold any texts to be infallible.

I agree though, Legally he has the right to build a giant mosque with Osama's face on it if he wants to, and legally you have the right to call him a dick for doing so. What's legal, what's right and what's kind and respectful are different things. This is clearly causing offence so maybe, if his primary motivation was making people like him, he shouldn't do it, but it isn't, so fuck him.

lockwoodisafaggot 1 year ago
Would being against that wacko in Florida burning the Koran out of respect be respect towards religion or respect to people (because, at least in the mind of people who don't follow the Koran, people made the book holy)?
Also, I don't watch a lot of Fox News (I don't like the way everything is a "FOX NEWS ALERT!"), but I love the way you point out the way that liberals seem to go out of their way (and against their own beliefs) to trash it.
tybo09 1 year ago
@tybo09 The constitutional/libertarian approach to the Koran burning is to allow him to do it, and complain about him doing it.(or not, fuck Islam) I would suggest that a bunch of muslims go down there and burn Bibles right beside him and see what happens.
Hashishin13 1 year ago
I was thinking about asking you for your view, too. Right now, it seems that only Christians, Jews, and Muslims are weighing in on it, I figure an atheist could give a different (and probably more objective view) on it.
tybo09 1 year ago
The (debatable) argument in the other direction is that we are at war with fundamentalist Islam and the building of this mosque will provide aid and comfort to the enemy. I've heard it compared to a Shinto shrine being constructed at Pearl Harbor. If the builders were very clear about their opposition to violence then I would have no problem with them building a "cultural center", which has a mosque so I don't know why that's brought up.
incrediblemulk42 1 year ago
@incrediblemulk42 Uhh, the Japanese have every right to build a shinto shrine at Pearl Harbour... as long as they own the land. Upsetting people isn't against the law, nor should it be. How exactly is a mosque in America providing aide and comfort to an enemy that is over an ocean, halfway across the world?
Also I am amazed you believe that Pearl Harbour is still a big deal, that one was paid back 100 fold at least with the bombs. Same with the wars for 9/11...
Hashishin13 1 year ago
Yeah, the YMCA doesn't do that anymore. They just use the letters. They don't use the whole "Young Mens Christian Association" tag anymore. They don't care whose money it is because all money is the same. It's just an exercise business now.

DuaneEH 1 year ago
@DuaneEH Completely Correct.
BritishNeoCon 1 year ago

Fight for freedom of belief, not religion.
silverhawkroman 1 year ago
@silverhawkroman i meant theory which is fact.
silverhawkroman 1 year ago
@silverhawkroman you can fight for both....but keep education a much higher priority and if religion gets in the way then facts should override religion...
Isuckatpaintball2 1 year ago
@Isuckatpaintball2 No man, religion should have absolutely no priority. it should be treated as mere recreation (like watching tv).
The only thing you're gonna get out of religion is fear of hell, maybe some discipline (but discipline should be handled by schools and not by preaching)
Freedom of belief is the way, freedom of religion? hell no.
silverhawkroman 1 year ago
@silverhawkroman so you said no freedom of religion that means that you can't choose what to believe in i never said religion should have a priority only the freedom to choose it
Isuckatpaintball2 1 year ago
@silverhawkroman You are the first atheist I have encountered saying "no" to freedom of religion.
arithine 1 year ago
@arithine Dont generalize, my friend. We all have our reasons/arguments for thinking what we think. I believe in freedom of belief, as it is merely subjective.
But most religions seek to make that subjective matter, objective, even if the evidence contradicts fact or even physics.
silverhawkroman 1 year ago
@silverhawkroman How was I generalizing? I didn't say all atheists believe in freedom of religion, I just pointed out the fact that you are the first one I have encountered that does not. Here are your words "freedom of religion? hell no."
I personally don't agree with many religious beliefs but I accept that they have the right to have them. Because lets face it, if you want to have the right to choose not to have a religion others have to have the right to choose any religion they want to.
