Is it dangerous for the dolphins to get so close to the propeller when you are going so fast? I would be afraid of injury if not fuel exhaust exposure for the dolphin.
We have just returned from a trip to Dingle specially to meet Fungi. We took a boat out into the bay and he came and played with us, frolicking and flirting, racing the boat, swooping and diving around us. The most thrilling and blissful experience! Quite magical. A local sailor told us that they had once thrown a fish to him which he viewed with disgust, then dived down and came up with a fish of his own in his mouth! He is with us for fun, not to beg for food, and he made that very clear.
They both had been towed from a speed boat while holding a board together that was attached to the boat with a rope:"...As we moved the dolphin would stay exactly the same distance from us, and, as we kept coming up, breaking the surface and going down, not once did we hit him. And as we were moving so fast through the water, he allowed us to stroke him for the first time...I could feel tears welling down my eyes and i looked at Mike, and saw his glassy eyes through his mask...". What a book!.
"...We could only hug each other- it was a very special moment, the tears just poured. And i was pleased that everybody else on the boat had shared in it as well. They were happy for us and the experience we'd just had, and that was so warming. The experience brought me very close to Mike. Every time i see him, a big buzz goes through me- I'm really proud that we shared that incredible experience...".
Some years ago i found a book in a charity shop: "Swimming with dolphins" by Liza Tenzin-Dolma. In it there were several testimonies by people who had the chance to swim with wild dolphins. The following excerpt is from Phill Woodfine on his encounter with Fungie: "When we got out of the water, I was ecstatic. I got on to the boat shouting 'Wow! Gee! Whoo!', and whooping and laughing hysterically. I looked across at Mike, and he had tears rolling down his face, he was so happy..."
This is how it should be... Visiting the dolphins in there own home! Not in captivity! Dolphins and orcas and all the rest! They don't belong in the fish tank!
You watch this and then you wonder how the fishermen of Taiji Japan, and other locations can hunt and kill dolphins??? What is their major malfunction? Please share this video with all the Japanese friends you know... :)
