@jat64 I have to know, should know, who is playing guitar. What a blessing this is......have loved it a looong time. The Memphis Sound is my all time favorite, and stands strong, today.
Beautiful music and a beautiful man. My prayers are with the family. I met Willie's 1st cousin Levi Lewellyn here in Saint Louis. Love and Peace from Saint Louis
RIP Willie. Love Al Green and without you, we wouldn't know him. Love this song, checkout the King Curtis version, he plays one of the most haunting and beautiful sax melodies I've ever heard.
Uncle Willie rest in peace knowing that you have left your mark on music world. We will all miss you. Say hello to Poppa and Grandma until we are all together again.
I remember buying the 45 of this (on Hi records, of course). Willie was a horn player. Does anybody out there know who the guitar player was at this session? Just very curious. Thanks
The trumpet was his main axe; maybe keys and some other horns but I can find nothing written about him playing guitar. I sent a short email to his studio, maybe they'll let me know who it was. Like I said, I'm just curious, no biggie. If they respond I'll pass it along. Maybe this tmerl guy knows (see above post).
@raynotpaul you were absolutely correct...Willie played trumpet from age 8...Thanks to you, I learned something new...Don't believe the ole addage, "You can't teach old dogs new tricks". LOL... You just did.... :-)
The guitar player is Teenie Hodges, one of the great underrated session men of the memphis scene. He plays on all of Al Green's wonderful late 60s/70s records on Hi Records (co-wrote the classic 'love and happiness' among many others) he is THE MAN
dude, just happened to be at willie mitchell's studio and brought this up...send me a shout out and maybe we can dialogue, willie's a buddy and his studio is still operating...

Definitely. You should check out the whole album King Curtis Live at Fillmore West. He covers Soul Serenade and has his best band behind him.
