Yes, this has always been one of my favorite jazz piano pieces of the 90's (1996), from an iconic jazz pianist, if you don't have swagger, listening to this gives it to you automatically, bow down to Mr. Joseph Leslie "Joe" Sample, bow down...
Joe Sample the Legend alive, I so love his music, it reminds of my dad he was playing Joe's music all the time where ever he was at home in his car, he made me fall in love with the Crusaders Joe Sample, Wilton felder, Wayne Handerson, Larry Calton,The Notorious Max Bennet some times they call him "Little Fellow and of cause Stix Hooper what a lovely combination of beautiful Jazz musicians....
This is by far my favorite album by Mr. Sample. It outshines the Jazz Crusaders, other records of his. Its startling just how good it is. This title track is about as neat and buttoned down as anything could hope to be, and it just smokes along. Its perfect. The way the bass picks up the melody to let Sample go exploring is glorious, and the notes he finds are just right. Check the track "Free Yourself" too- its so sweet, I find it breathtaking.
nobody has a good Jazz station anymore. It's a conspiracy to dumb down music. Country, rap(gangsta), contemporary(gaga poo-poo), NPR??, el communicado', and acouple of oldies channels. It's really sad. I used to have the first run Old Faces Cd. along with alot of other narada, grp, etc....wish i had them all back NOW!
@kennyt2011 Hi...I agree. Here in Cleveland, they finally got rid of our contemporary jazz station 107.3 WNWV...I was UPset. If I could I'd buy 2 radio stations...one for jazz (ALL JAZZ) and one for old school RnB/Pop/Funk (60-1985 only)...and I'd be an INDEPENDENT station so there'd be no predetermined playlist that played the same things over and over.
Is it me or can one imagine the hippies with the zoot suits on the street corner upon hearing this? (Hence the song's title) I mean, you can actually visualize it
@TLDavisJazzChannel One of my favs from this living legend... this tune always reminds me of a cool cat strolling down 42nd street N.Y.C. a true NEW YORKER... boppin to the tune on his walkman.. ipods werent around @ the time... amazin how music can/does allow the mind to drift & feel what ever ya like. Thanks 4 the share TL & thank u boswell69 4 the post. PEACE!
Ahhh yes! One of Joe's finest! Even my 2 cats like this song! I swear when I play it on the stereo, they come strolling into the living room and lay in front of the stereo!

This entire album [Old Places Old Faces] was phenomenal. I wish could get another copy of it. (For free, lol)

More cowbell! :) Great piece, the Smooth Jazz station used to play it often here before they flipped to urban Contemporary... Bring back SJ!

Now I do believe this was recorded in the 90's but it sounds like it was from the 60's or early 70's.
Wonder if Joe wrote it years ago and didn't end up recording it till years later?
