You can't 'do' actuary. Just like you can't 'do' lawyer, or doctor.

You can, however, do ACTUARIAL SCIENCE. Learn how to use the words first before trying to understand what they are.

I'm an actuary (all done with the xams and everything) but I don't worry about pensions (except my own). We worry about the cost of risky stuff, like when a drug company rolls out a new drug -- what if it has bad side effects that the company didn't know about? You can insure for that. Or what if you're worried about because if you die too soon your kid might not get to go to college and become an actuary? You can insure for that too. Actuaries figure out what the cost of the insurance would be.

@hasnainkhatau Yes, that's right. In the US there are two main actuarial societies -- the Society of Actuaries and the Casualty Actuarial Society - that correspond to the main practice areas. The SOA concerns itself with life, pensions and investments. The CAS concerns itself with property and liability (casualty) insurance. I am a Fellow of the CAS.

@hasnainkhatau You are correct. Here in the US there is a separation between property-casualty insurance (what you would call general insurance in the UK) and life-pension-investments. I specialize in property-casualty insurance and am a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society. I would have to be credentialed by the Society of Actuaries to work in life or pensions, though members of either society work in ERM or health.

@JujutsuMama I'm studying at the University of Southampton in the UK, its a joint degree actually; Mathematics with actuarial science. To be fair I'm still a first year, and will be one-third of an actuary by summer :) so I wouldn't possibly know as much as you. But yeah, in the UK everything falls under one umbrella - Institute of Actuaries.
