The One True God, the God of Israel, Yeshua the Messiah has always had HIS hand on Kansas and their music, even when members of the band where not believers (IMHO!). Yeshua is Lord!
Google "PHROCK Blog: Proto-Kaw - Early Recordings From Kansas" and click the first link. There you go. Similar, but less "progressive". It's one of my favourite albums, and I don't even like Kansas. ;)
This really brings out some deep emotions for me. Kansas was the band for myself and my closest friends in high school. We used to see them every time we could. The first time was at the Villanova Field house in Feb. 1976 when I was fifteen. I saw a vid of Icarus from that concert listed on Youtube and was afraid to listen to it for fear that it would not be as good as I remembered it. Boy was I wrong! It is fabulous. Kansas was a great band. They never disappointed at a live show in the day.
Kansas really is underrated (thank you Pinnacle). Nobody these days appreciates true musicianship.
Also, nobody realizes how good of a singer Steve Walsh is. The notes that he hits in this song are mind boggling. The fact that he can hit them IN TUNE just blows me away...
The organ solos in this song are also amazing. I must say that it's not that difficult to play the organ fast, but the fact that it's so in style is amazing. Great guitar solos also.
not really, there were already more powerful albums and even much more complex albums from other earlier prog artists, like Yes, Genesis or ELP, yet i think Kansas has its own niche right up there with them, in any case, they were among the best since the start, it drives me mad these guys are so underrated
I, too, was weaned on this album, as teen, by my best friend's older sister, Mary. From the first time I heard it, I was ADDICTED. Their BEST LP EVER....Mostly non-commercial, VERY RELEVANT lyrics...even to this day! Thank you so much for posting!!!
@rodcrippler John Brown was a real guy, yeah he was a character too, but he was based on the real guy. He tried to start a rebellion and seized an armory and no actual slaves wanted to join him, because they knew he wouldn't win. He was hung, but many in the North admired him and after his death hung black shrouds and stuff.
their early stuff is the best!!!!!

Is it just me or was the demo of this song/album SO much better? I have the whole album lying around somewhere, thinking of putting it up.

Me too. Finally owned this album at age 16 in 1975 (one year after release). An absolute classic!
