  • Why didn't they put Solaris on this thing as well? Retards...

  • True supercomputers have 70,000 quad-core Xeon processors.

  • Buy this rig just to browse the net with.

  • Comment removed

  • I need 4 of this to rule the universe o_o

  • i bet it can't run pong

  • ill stick with my Tesla blades thank you very much. Fraction of the cost for orders of magnitude more DPFP performance....

  • @uhudmen Wow...

You have one my respect good sir, for being such an open-minded person! Enjoy the rest of your day!

  • @uhudmen That's the only time I've ever heard that. It may be time to join 'em, bro, because you ain't gonna beat 'em.

  • So there really *is* a prebuilt computer that will run Crysis.

  • Can i play tic tac toe on it until someone hacks in and accidentally starts ww3? How about a nice game of chess?

  • Will it blend..

  • but can it fly?

  • that thing is a fucking monster!0.0

  • actully you can all get on Dell.com for 50,000$ No joke!!!

  • It should be compatible with OSX. Just saying.

  • @inventorkid13 it runs linux

  • The insides of x86 cpu's is nothing x86 like. They are hackjobs like no other. Back in the day Alpha's would emulate them and run programs at faster speeds than they would run them themselves. Such a shame.

  • "Are you crazy?!"

    "No, I'm just Cray!"

  • you can do everything on mac, most pc software makers are also investing in making mac softwares!

  • @7NEOMAN macs are only good for making music and videos nothing else

  • @TheNameIsLegion Bullsh*t!

  • @dontillman yah u can edited movies and music on them like amazing but otherwise they cant do wat som PCs can do

  • @TheNameIsLegion R U smoking crack? The Intel Macs have the same x86 processor you have! They have Intel processors and in some cases, Intel motherboards! They can even boot Windows or Linux. Macs can and ALWAYS been able to do anything you want! Read up!

  • @dontillman yah like 3 nividia 580s right? oh w8 no thats impossible for macs :) not to mention most PC games are made for windows exclusively :P

  • @TheNameIsLegion UR dim. The MacPro's have FOUR PCI-e slots.. Read up! : )

Shame you are such a fanboy for such a LOWSY OS such as (heavily patched) XP... : )

  • @dontillman dosent matter you can STILL upgrade PCs more and PCs have bigger and faster processors now take ur mac and go to starbucks and talk with all ur mac friends about how Safari is better then chrome :P

  • @dontillman Macs are for hipsters who want to show off to their fellow teens how much money they have. If you want to play games or get real computing done Windows and Linux are the way to go. I'm a gamer who wants to have fun with his computer... so Windows is the obvious choice.

  • @dontillman Really? You think that PC users all still use XP? Are you retarded or what? That could explain why you use a Mac! XD

  • @dontillman If Mac OS X is so mother fucking capable, then why the fuck do Macs now use Windows? LOL... you're ignorant! XD

  • @WellBeSerious12 - A very tasteless and unprofessional response. Are you 12 years old yet?

  • @dontillman Almost 20, dipshit!

  • @7NEOMAN Software, not softwares!

  • I Wish it ran mac osx snow leopard!!!

    It deserves better than windows.

Once you go mac, you'll never turn back!

  • @7NEOMAN If you are an artist..yes. If you are crunching numbers...no.

  • Will it run Tetris?!?!?!?

  • @spudinator2

    prob at ∞ FPS

  • High-performance supercomputer but the video's in 360p. That makes sense.

  • like her voice, but "technical server".....hmmm

  • bleh i would rather buy a BMW than this piece of awesomeness!

  • Multi-Monerting Dual-os

    Try doing that!

  • lets see crysis on that

  • I do want one, but I can imagine these things are way over-priced.. :O

  • Xeon is crap

  • I want one!

  • these are the pcs used to host world of warcraft and massive multiplayer games

and hosting high end games suchs as crysis.

  • i gotta get one of these, or i can build one out of spare parts, minus the noise cancellation, and the front screen

  • I experience long delays - but not in processing data elements...usually have to go through the proper channels with my spouse when buying something, then remembering that it's always easier to ask for forgiveness than it is to ask for permission.

  • @pmgodfrey Amen!

  • I think it should be a tad larger. It could hold more that way and be more powerful. This doesn't fit enough technology into it. Perhaps they will realize this and make another version in the future, but better. Did you hear me, CRAY? And what would you get if you have five of these and combine they're power together?

  • @Consumerofknowledge

    This is Cray's "portable" supercomputer

Their FULL SIZE supercomputers are insane Like the Jaguar (a Cray XT5 supercomputer, the fastest in the world as of june 2010, with peak 2petaflop computational power), over 200 000 (TWO HUNDRED THOUSAND!) 4 OR 6 core opterons, over 10 PETAbytes of combined storage, and over 360 TERAbytes of combined memory.

Is that enough power for you ?

  • @mdma4life Was the Jag before or after the Kraken?

  • @TwoGun79

Jag was after kraken and is still being actively upgraded (last year something like 120,000 6 core processors were added)

  • @mdma4life Dear GOD!!!! I wonder what they are using for processors? I know the CX1 uses like 8 Xeon QC L5520's not to mention 3 Nvidia quatro fx 4800's, 24 sticks of 2 gig DDR3, Two tera's of sata 3 hard drives and I'm sure there's a hooker somewhere in there also lol. That system is just for the house and thats NUTS! I'd trade my wife for one.... hell, I'd trade the bitch for a six pack and a pizza but you get the idea.

  • stupid question: can you use this computer like an ordinary PC? i mean, like exactly a PC. can you?

  • o rly? can it runs crysis?

  • @TUOGeX idk, is the sky blue?

  • @TUOGeX:

    lol^^

  • @TUOGeX No, It could not lol

  • @my20lbcat Yes. :)

  • @my20lbcat . Yes, you can disign games and much much more.

  • Let´s play crysis on that!!! hahahahaha

  • It would make sense to put this thing in some kind of rack to hold it, perhaps by the sides so it doesn't melt your floor.

  • Don't trust any super computer that doesn't have a rotary dial phone and a cigarette lighter on it.

  • @cobrachoppergirl I don't smoke though.

  • This presentation does not give how much this baby CX1 cost?

  • @imrank340 poor man's model is 15K

  • windows? it's a joke i hope.... it's like to buy a ferrari and use it with gpl fuel

  • No doubt these things run extremely hot. I have a HP rack mount server and I couldn't imagine not running it in a very cool dust-free environment.

They're basically saying "yeah take a server-level computer and put it next to your desk, no problem!"

Yeah right. If you loaded that up with processors it's going to freaking melt through the floor.

  • Yeah, isn't it amazing news. The new Cray is a PC!

  • Thats no Cray, thats just another intel box!

  • @ragonamuffin

    is it???

  • Good to know that science found a way of playing BioShock

  • Put a NVIDIA 296 in every one of those slots and now you've got a gaming PC!

  • how much does it cost ?.i bet 100x more a normal PC

  • a few thousand. it's on their website, you can order it online.

  • @LantherZero ok,thanks

  • - @LantherZero -

The base system (chassis) costs about $10,000.

A fully configured system without operating system costs $172,881. That's a bit more than "a few thousand".

  • Until you get the price past $30000, it's still a few thousand in my eyes.

you don't have to choose between just the minimal or fully configured CX-1. you can customize it to what you need, and for almost everyone who would buy a CX-1 that is a good bit below the best they offer on that model.

  • @pmgodfrey Thats a crazy price few could pay, unless they saved for along time.

  • So how does this compare to the GPU-based 'supercomputers' from NVIDIA ?

  • Would be SOOO nice to afford something even half this nice!! LOL

  • and you can run games on this monster?

  • yes but your game will only use 1 CPU ;)

  • @Razputin53 Yes you can, this moster is actually for higher end usage like CATIA software, CATIA is a french software to design planes, weapons, submarines, CATIA is past CAD/CAM little software to build homes. This HPC is for weather forecast, simulation and fast processing. Fot CAT scan and 3D renditions like for movies toy story etc.

  • how much is it?

  • did they get the cyberdine chick to do this? XD

  • And who might that be? Also, you do realize this is about the computer...? ;)

  • You do realize the price for this is $9,803 at minimum configuration.

  • oh i want one! i woulndt have to upgrade for 8 years, instead of every 2!

  • One problem...You would spend 8 years of budgets on this thing.

  • I love this advert. The narrator's voice is perfect. It's like a sci-fi movie from the 80's.

  • I bet that thing can play Minesweeper like nothing else :p

  • so how many teraflops does this thing have?

  • 16 processors, maybe this baby doesnt can run opera browser without hanging up every 2secs :D

sounds just like the shit i need :p

  • Ugly case, shame! Where do all the industrial designers have thier head today?

  • I have to agree. Would have been cool to make it like a CM5 with all the LEDs, or maybe from slabs of marble. Or spherical and translucent!

  • Cray, the father of supercomputers. . .

  • Hmm I think it could be good for... ... no clue. Dont know what to use it for. and yeah WTF where's the Cup holder!

  • Video editing at pro standard, making music to studio standard, making games, walkthroughs, visualising experiments and engineering, hunners of stuff. Cup holder, if there's a spare 5" bay just bang a Thermaltake one in or whoever is making them thesedays.

  • Mind you it says in the blurb it's a datacenter bridge, so it'll be intended for that then - it must be suited to pull views and sorts and searches off big giant databases.

  • Holy balls, dude, 16 processors? xD

  • ha! not impressed my windows 95 does that

  • LOL! Nice

  • in fifteen years, we will all laugh at this..

  • People laughed at my computer when I first turned it on

  • @jonathanhucke Actually, a small japanese firm has something unique, it is a pc that does not need upgrade or update or software, it just connects you to a cluster of infrastructure on the internet, the news says Bill Gates is afraid of that company, I assume windows 7 or 8 or Windows Andromeda will be the past, it will happen in your life time. Singapore & malasia have the faster internet connection all fiber optics. Bush, Clinton were slept at the wheel in technology.

  • @HelmetVanga Ohhh! FIber Optics. NICE. We need fiber optics.

  • i wonder how many gta 4's it can run

  • But still no cup holders? WTF?

  • @JoshyNapalm I know. WTF? I can't drink coffee or a bottle of wine since there is no place to store in on this computer, apparently.

  • i wonder if it can run pacman?

  • I doubt that. no chance it can run such a game ! :D

  • well i play crysis and duh cray code name crytec lol

  • COOLLLLL geillll supper geilll dankeschön

  • .

I have a code in my node.

    .

  • CRAY same typography of Crysis?

    hahaha lol

  • No.

  • sure as hell looks like it though

  • a cray prob created crytec software which made crysis lol

  • Don't even get me started on what I use for gaming...

  • Pssh. I use one of these for surfing the web.

  • All Hail Seymour Cray the original PC modder! Still making the fastest best looking rigs a man could hope to own.

  • More like people who know him, or his relatives. LOL He died in 1996.

  • NVIDIA TESLA IS BETER

  • FUCK YES!

  • You can get up to four NVIDIA Tesla blades inside the CX1

  • What's a blade? Is it like a regular video card?

  • @tall32guy a blade is nothing but a hot swappable HDD...just slim that looks like a blade.

  • Ahh cool! Thanks for the info. Now I know. :)

  • Two different products bro, this is an entire desktop supercomputer and Nvid tesla is a GPU/processing blade system that can be integrated into a computer.

  • OK now explain what a blade system is. LOL!

  • Suse is pronounced ´zoo-sah´. It´s a female German name.

  • This is a HPC system. NOBODY uses Windows on a HPC system (unless they're idiots).

  • Get a supercomputer and then ruin it with windows

  • @tomjb24 Redhat is nice

  • @tomjb24 already done windows CANT handle the power lol

  • @tomjb24 It's linux (redhat or suse) certified too. But i agree, this goodie is too powerfull to have windows screwing it with GPFs and NT screens of death. It deserves better.

  • @tomjb24 Don't be a windows hater! Stop your hating. Please.

I got windows, but I don't hate Mac.

  • What does HPC stand for?

  • High Performance Computing

  • the day i get 1000.000$ ill buy one of those ^^

  • 10,000$ should get u a good one

  • i recommend nvidia tesla

  • but can it play GTA IV?

  • I can only dream of owning one of these babies!!

  • I used to say that about SGI workstations back in the 90's. Today you can pick one up on eBay for a few bucks. :P

  • We'll pick this one up 10 years down the line for eBay for pennies but who knows, your mobile phone would probably be that fast then (hopefully the Moore's law would still apply)!! LOL! This would be obsolete 10 years down the line. So, no point! :-(

  • Hahaha agree that, does anybody remember Octane? or any SGI?, Its seems unexisting today, something that was widely recognized as the primary option to do hard computer graphics, Daaam SGI was the best thing back in the days, now went sold it by a few bucks.

And yeah, incredible those cost a thousands of dollars, and look now, well time.

  • I remember the Silicon Graphics Indigo be-speckled "pizza box". I wanted one of those. ;)

  • I wrote a final year thesis on 3D visualisation in the mining industry in 1996, I predicted that people would soon buy cheap PCs with 3D accelerator cards instead of expensive SGI workstations. And that's exactly what happened.

  • @Diamonddavej you are right. The new ASUS Mars video card is owesome and I believe surpassed SGI workstations in resolution.

  • @carlostinonsa SGI silicon Graphics, the hype and excitment, Peruvian Congress bought SGI computers for their entire government computing power, now they are dead in the water without tech support or software update/upgrade.

  • That happen when a computer hardware/software company stop existing. So normal, by the way in his time was good, but time changes.

    Saludos.

  • I'll bet money that if Cray used Sun's upcoming Rock processor, which is a multi-core re-implementation of UltraSPARC, it would offer more throughput than any Intel design.

Each core can support 4 threads, and each Rock chip would have about 8 cores.

Software written with parallel support would run faster on more cores each of which is more efficient than a fat-core Intel design.

  • I MUST get my hands on one of these one day!!

BUT Cray MUST get Sun to port Solaris 10 to this kind of machine.

Windows is garbage, and Linux does not add enough value to hardware of this quality.

Only Solaris has the library and compiler support to convince industry leaders to port their software to this really REALLY amazing platform.

They talk about CAD/CAM programs, but no one offers anything for Linux, and only a moron would use Windows on a Cray.

I have spoken, and I know my stuff.

  • @nightowl8936 This cray rig would be very suitable for CATIA the french software to designs from airplanes to you can imagine, the mouse has 6 knobs.. CATIA is too huge and demaning for little PCs or little Macs.
