As superior as I think Heifetz's version is, I do have to say that Markov really channels Paganini greatly here. Somewhat out of control, impulsive, creative/imaginative, unpredictable, virtuosic, and most importantly, often close to the edge of complete disaster! BRAVO!
@aimson I agree - usually I dislike it when violinists go for speed and push their control to the limit, as I think it makes for a less pleasing sound. However, like you said, I think it works really well here - the piece itself is technically all over the place - both bow and left hand jumping about everywhere. The lack of restraint really brings the piece to life- love it!
I can't that I particularly enjoyed this performance. He simply rushed through all the notes without any thought. Also, his phrasings and ritards made nest to no musical sense. There's no doubt he's a wonderful player in a technical aspect, but he lacks the musicality and insight of an experienced player.
Never been a fan of Markov's playing style.. and this interpretation of Paganini's 24th caprice is a prime example of why.. I feel like he just chops out the notes with no care for them whatsoever.. using them to showcase his own playing "prowess" rather than interpreting a beautiful piece of music and doing the piece justice.
Nobody will ever play this piece the way Jascha Heifetz did. To my ears that is the single most beautiful piece of music I've ever heard when it comes from his violin.
@Dstrukt2k2 Ah yes, the purist. But please note Heifetz's rendition was actually an edit by Leo Auer (taking nothing away from it as it is a technical masterpiece within its own right) but I do believe (and many will agree) that Markov's "interpretation" (very important word and only in reference to this particular caprice) is perhaps closest to what Paganini himself would have either played or wanted to have played like. After all, this is the essential look-what-I can-do piece. jmho
WARNING: If you try to play play 3:00 - 3:20 and pluck with the wrong part of your finger, you will be sucking on your left hand for hours. I can't play the passage, but I tried to play Le Ronde le Luitens, and just about tore my left hand off.
@masterofpuppets10893. Generally speaking during ensemble playing [trios, quartets, etc..] the additional physical movement is required as it used to convey time to other players since there is no conductor. Excessive body movement, especially in solo work, long term can lead to issues with intonation, technical precision, muscle fatigue and injury, and a host of other things. Watch Heifetz play #24 for a demonstration of maximum efficiency with minimal effort typical of the Russian school
@msfattytroll If I weren't already convinced that you were an ignorant jerk I'd take more time to explain the reasoning. It is quite consistent across all contemporary schools of violin pedagogy, not just the Russian school. But as you are clearly not an advanced performer, teacher, or even a reasonable human being, I'd be wasting my breath.
@trevorpinnocky When your in an ensemble it makes sense to stay still. But soloing needs expression. Markov is letting the music flow through him and is expressing the feelings in this piece not just through his playing but also with his body. So what your teacher said doesn't apply here.
@reddupo actually, both of them can. Each has won international violin competitions.. It is standard practice in the Russian school to restrict unnecessary movements. cheers ; )
He came to my high school last year and played this. I was sitting there amazed to begin with. When he got to the "tapping" part, I was floored. He also brought his gold plated, 6 string, electric violin. It was awesome.
If your teacher is such an uptight asshole that he would fault someone for letting their body move expressively while performing then your teacher shouldn't be allowed to teach.
Markov is one of the greatest violinists alive today, and he has no doubt spent countless hours learning and perfecting paganini's pieces.
When your teacher is as renowned as Markov then maybe his opinion will matter.
I like how he puts his whole body into his playing. Consumed by the vibrations of sound, he performs to please himself. His pleasure emanates to the audience and entrances them to his vibration. Paganini's masterpiece is like analyzing the Mona Lisa, you interpret the art as if it is nothing, then open your mind to the ideals in the art to find our own resolve. Thus Alexander Markov has interpreted Paganini and shared his resolve to the audience for them to apply whatever message they receive. K
I think I just wet myself watching 3:00, paganini was the modern day eddie van halen of his time. How can anyone not like this! No I can see why his viewers thought he sold his soul to the devil. Incredible.
