@l3amboo with East European milsurp it is a must because the cases are steel and the primers are corrosive. The 7.62 x 54R is a very potent round. A lot of this stuff dates back to the early fifties - if not earlier. It is very VERY common for the cartridges of older ammo to be corroded on the inside - forming weak spots in the casing. When the round is fired the cases are prone to splitting in four or five places near the base. Hot gas and some debris is dumped right in your face and eyes.

@andrewvanrhoberts Mosin is good starter rifle. Yeah its a pretty rough recoil with the old metal butt plate though. If you buy a Mosin, don't buy a M38 or M44 model, none of the shortened ones. The shorter the barrel the more recoil. Buy a 91/30. Use 174 grain bullets not 203 grains they pack a wallop. Buy a rubber butt pad for it also. Not the kind that screws into the butt, but one that slides over. You can change the thickness of the padding if it slides over.

M44 has to have bayonet extended to be Accurate at longer ranges, it has to do with the test firing in the factories, during the manufacturing process they kept the bayonet extended through all test firing and it caused an impression to the barrel that the bayonet will balance when extended. lrn2hirstory dumbass.

aye, the dog collars are the best in my opinion also! That's what my m44 has on it right now. I only have one, but plan on at least a 91/30; hopefully a Tula just to branch out. Your collection sounds nice! The only other milsurp type rifle i have is a yugo m70ab2 ak-47. The rest are more modern.
When you shoot the m44, prepare for a MUCH larger fireball and louder report due to the shorter barrel and powder still burning when it leaves the muzzle. FUN to shoot at dusk!
I have a Tula hex receiver. Matching numbers. The numbers on my M44 don't match, that, and the wear on the stock just tells me it most likely saw some action in it's 65 years.

i had an M44 that i got for $120 at a flea market, the ammo the guy gave me was old an got stuck. i have the m91/30 now. the bolt on the 91/30 is a bit stiff but its a pretty good gun, i got it for $100 at Dunhams.
if it is a rifle not conceterd high powered you can be under 18 but if your over 18 you should be alright and i live in kentucky too and im about to buy 1 but im not sure if thats the laws but i think that is right
i live in ohio, i'm pretty sure the laws r about the same here. if its a small rifle like a 22 or a common shotgun u have to be 18, for hand guns u have to be 21. my mom got my 90/31 in her name an she had to do alot of paper work on it, i'm pretty sure for a rifle of that power u have to be 21 also. simpley call a local gun shop and ask them, they will gladly tell u.
I'm assuming you mean the 91/30. They both kick hard, but the M44's is more severe. Ammo also comes into play, also. if you don't want bruises on your shoulder (At least with my 91/30, I've never shot an M44), get the Czechoslovakian light ball ammo (less than a quarter each) from AIM. The two other types of ammo I've shot through it are the Bulgarian and Yugoslavian heavy ball. They both will make your arm sore. Especially the Bulgarian ammo. All 3 have about the same recoil, but the Czech
ammo is just a bit less, enough that it won't kill your shoulder.
As for price, an M44 will cost you around $200, and the 91/30 will be around (give or take) $100. So even though the M44 is dirt cheap, the 91/30 is cheaper than dirt...
It's totally up to you, neither are really better than the other. Just one is shorter and has an affixed bayonet...
Wheres the bayonet boss? If the answer is it doesn't have one I think you've got an M38 on a 44 stock, which is better anyway.

LOL yes sir it does! In fact, the first time i took it to the range with it's metal buttplate and no recoil pad, I managed a whopping 15 shots. TOTAL. Before I had to pack it in. LOL. I put on a limbsaver and that helps a bunch! :) They're so fun though aren't they ? I'm got my C&R because of my love for mosin and older rifles.
I was wrong BTW, I have an Izhmash '45, not a Tula

I just got a Izhevsk M44, I also have a Tula 91/30. Haven't shot the M44 yet though. I also have a Yugo and Chinese SKS.

i know mines an izzy.... anyway, im going to drill out and tap the front sight post later. install a small diamter threaded rod to use as an adjustable front sight... also.. i may refinish the stock... stock is in great shape, but some sanding, restain in that orange stain you see on many nagants.. and an epoxy clear top coat for ultimate durability and im good to go

aye, the dog collars are the best in my opinion also! That's what my m44 has on it right now. I only have one, but plan on at least a 91/30; hopefully a Tula just to branch out. Your collection sounds nice! The only other milsurp type rifle i have is a yugo m70ab2 ak-47. The rest are more modern.
When you shoot the m44, prepare for a MUCH larger fireball and louder report due to the shorter barrel and powder still burning when it leaves the muzzle. FUN to shoot at dusk!

I have a Tula hex receiver. Matching numbers. The numbers on my M44 don't match, that, and the wear on the stock just tells me it most likely saw some action in it's 65 years.

i fired 20 rounds of 203 grain the other day with the steel buttplate.. its not bad for recoil.. just weekened my shoulder enough for the 1oz 12 gauge slugs i fired afterwards to finish me off

Superior amounts of man power are what won the eastern front. Hitler's fight with Russia was a war of attrition it was all about who could afford to lose more men and Germany was already hurting on manpower from fighting a war on multiple different fronts. The Mosin Nagant is robust and sturdy but also very crude and somewhat clumsy and far from elegant. I wouldn't call it Junk or rubbish But there are other rifles that are more superior.

Superior amounts of men and "WEAPONS" the Mosin rifle was produced in the millions in ww2,while say 10,000 German k98 rifles were coming off the line a week-30,000 Mosin rifles were coming off the line in a week it was the AK47 of bolt actions. And personally,all shit aside if my life depended on a rifle in combat I would take a Mosin rifle over a k98 or 1903 anyday,They dont fail and get the job done

i had an M44 that i got for $120 at a flea market, the ammo the guy gave me was old an got stuck. i have the m91/30 now. the bolt on the 91/30 is a bit stiff but its a pretty good gun, i got it for $100 at Dunhams.

i live in ohio, i'm pretty sure the laws r about the same here. if its a small rifle like a 22 or a common shotgun u have to be 18, for hand guns u have to be 21. my mom got my 90/31 in her name an she had to do alot of paper work on it, i'm pretty sure for a rifle of that power u have to be 21 also. simpley call a local gun shop and ask them, they will gladly tell u.

You only have to be 18 to own anything from a BB gun to a .700 Nitro. Handguns require that you be 21.

I'm assuming you mean the 91/30. They both kick hard, but the M44's is more severe. Ammo also comes into play, also. if you don't want bruises on your shoulder (At least with my 91/30, I've never shot an M44), get the Czechoslovakian light ball ammo (less than a quarter each) from AIM. The two other types of ammo I've shot through it are the Bulgarian and Yugoslavian heavy ball. They both will make your arm sore. Especially the Bulgarian ammo. All 3 have about the same recoil, but the Czech

ammo is just a bit less, enough that it won't kill your shoulder.
As for price, an M44 will cost you around $200, and the 91/30 will be around (give or take) $100. So even though the M44 is dirt cheap, the 91/30 is cheaper than dirt...
It's totally up to you, neither are really better than the other. Just one is shorter and has an affixed bayonet...
