  • peter greeberg = DUMB FUCK

  • You CBS People Are really Stupid, you people blow things out of proportion so badly.......You all make me want to puke

  • HEY CBS ┌∩┐(._.)┌∩┐YOU!

  • stupid bitch the kid wasnt directing traffic

  • big deal. you have little kids flying airplanes everyday. let the kid be ATC for 5 minutes. I hate the news and the FAA.

  • @002observador agreed and if the idiots listened to the entire recording, they would have seen that the kid only directed that was held on the ground who requested takeoff clearance, and for landing cleareance the dad gave instructions. the dad did nothing wrong in my opinion

  • how does sterile cockpit apply to this incident ? Dumbass media. ATC can have small reprimand but certainly this is no big deal.

  • cmon really da atc is innocent i would want that my kid as atc shoot

  • cmon really da atc is innocent

  • What a bunch of prudes. Hope the kid gows up to become an air traffic controller or a pilot. To heck with the media and sure, it was a lack of good judgement but, I commend the "father" or giving an innocent kid a "SPARK" to embark upon in his young life...SOMETHING VERY MUCH NEEDED IN AMERICA TODAY!! F*CK THE MEDIA, B*TCHES ON THIS FOR DASHING SHAME ON SOMETHING THAT A KID WILL REMEMBER FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE.

  • im sure that boy will be an air traffic controller in the future..

  • Im sure Air traffic controllers arent brain dead and im sure the child was repeating instructions given by the adult

  • It's illegal to talk over an ATC frequency without an appropriate license. Even ATC trainees have one.

In ATC one little mistake, one misunderstanding, one miss-synchronization and lives could be in danger.

The pilots involved were reckless. They went along with this putting their passengers at risk.

Are some of you suggesting that controllers could continue letting kids do this. I don't know if those who condone this have a real understanding of what it at stake.

    Reconsider please

  • how is it a big reaction really. besides the kid was prob told what to say so then nothing wrong happened!

  • I agree with rtclovin. He wasn't actually "controlling" traffic. He was just repeating fed words is all. The planes were not actually up in the air! They were grounded! I personally would have had no problems with being on one of those planes.

  • yes. but what if a misunderstanding occured. for example, if a plane were to taxi onto the runway when they were not supposed to, and a plane was landing at that same time, disaster could have occured. This is one of many space conflicts that could occur which would be quite dangerous. im not a pilot or atc, but I do take interest and study into this kind of stuff.

  • I guarantee that this kid was repeating the instructions given to him by his father (the ATCS). To think that a child was given ANY part of a decision making process is absurd!! Poor judgement on the controllers part - yes. Children in control of live air traffic? Not a chance!!!

  • What's with the ad at the beginning??????

  • Did the kid miss guide a plane or give any kind of wrong message, Sounds to me like he did a better job than the regular employees that work there.

The other thing eveyone has to remember is that what goes on in the world and whats on t.v are two different things all together

  • the dad was the one doing all the work all the kids did was tell the pilot he is cleared to take off the ffa needs to calm down

  • HARMANP21

    > the dad was the one doing all the work

    EVIDENTLY not.

And EVIDENTLY, you have no idea how many flights a single air traffic controller is duty-bound to give his FULL attention AT THE SAME TIME--being all titillated and proud at your child horsing around on the microphone "under your supervision" just might maybe perhaps possibly conflict with the preceding requirement.

    . . .

  • You have never even wondered WHY air traffic controllers are required to work only a limited number of hours at one stretch, yet still get paid so much for it.

The statements by the FAA and by the union of air traffic controllers might possible maybe could provide a hint. Oh, wait. Why do they not think it's OK?! Damn!

  • FAA should calm the fuck out.

the kid merely repeated what his dad told hm to say.

  • your all stupid his father was telling him what to say

  • TWISTEDWEST1

    > your all stupid

    Spot the irony.

  • I cant believe people actually think this guy did something wrong. It probably brightened those pilots day, which would have otherwise been boring and stressful. He should be given a raise for being awesome.

  • Those who claim "The plane was on the ground" as an excuse seem unaware that take offs and landings are the most hazzadous phases of a flight. A plane getting ready to take off also has a combination of passengers and large quantities of fuel. Controllers have no authority to make their high school buddy, girlfriends/boyfriends, favorite bartender, child, etc. part of the process.

  • there is nothing hazardous about repeating to an airplane you're cleared for takeoff. it's a big over-reaction

  • 'We have clearance, Clarence.'

'Roger, Roger. What's our vector, Victor?'

  • Lol to those of you not upset by this. With all the near incursions at airports today! Figures a NEw York ATC who thinks his shit doesnt stink and the rules don't apply to him! Well, I don't care. i DO NOT want some kid doing an important and serious job! If his father is a baker or a garbage man fine but not an ATC! Even his own union is throwing him under the bus! Hey Mr. NEw Yahk ATC: hope it was worth it cuz now you will be fired!!! IDIOT!

  • Those idiots are the type who seriously believe that there is no problem until the problem actually happens.

"Lax security is no problem until a bomb actually gets through AND gets detonated." ... "Kids taking over the mic at the air traffic control tower is no problem until planes actually collide on the runway." ... you get the idea.

"McDonalds, Starbucks, Kinkos, factory, office, air traffic control tower--there's no difference!" Idiots indeed.

  • Comment removed

  • Typical media response...Always screaming fire in the movie theatre!! ...#1 - These aircraft were on the ground. #2 - Dad was right there directing as all Dads are supposed to do #3- supererc is a super jerk with his white people comment, he is racist and didn't listen...these aircraft were on the ground.

  • Doesnt matter that the aircraft were on the ground. So what? He broke the rules. He knows it. He will be fired! We don't need irresponsible people doing an important job.

  • 1 In your world, airport runways are like expressways--multiple lanes in one direction.

2 In your world, jets are like cars--just swerve out of the way!

3 In your world, "bring your kids to work day" is the same as "have your kids take over at work day".

4 In your world, Kinko's and McDonald's are no different than an air traffic control tower.

On your next subway or bus ride, I hope a kid has taken over. Enjoy the laugh.

  • cant get rid of that kids dad, everyone knows his voice

  • White people.

  • this lady said it perfect. a kid CLEARLY directing air traffic which is more for what i can say for some of the dumb asses i train in the tower everyday.

  • Come on, really. The bubble headed bleach blondes with the gleam in there eye. You ATC guys are the only part of the FAA that people respect. Unfortunately for you the public doesn't get it and in the case of the feds the lunatics are running the asylum. And for you that don't get it look at it for what it was...much a do about nothing.

  • there is a bigger problem people....TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS SUCK!

  • plural of leaf is 'leaves'...just so you're aware next time :)

  • it's the name of a hockey team, and that is how it's spelt. thanks for caring though

  • What a pile of shit...

A dad let his kid pretty much just say good bye to a few planes that were taking off and everyone is up in arms over it.

9/11 turned 1/3 of Americans into a bunch of over cautious, jump out of your skin over a loud fart drama queens.

  • lol ppl get angry over nothin!!

  • This is a crock of shit. Take your son to work and tossed under the bus. It is not like the kid was making an cut with pop's tools during brain surgery. I mean...common. He repeated what he was told to do... and every thing was pre-arranged.

FAA is a bunch of ass holes to act like this.

I swear shit like this makes me want to move out of the US.

  • then go ahead and ride the plane the kid is directing, good fuckling luck.

  • forget about the adult pulling the strings? downer

  • All bus drivers should have their children take over the wheel. Train engineers have their children take control, too. Why spare the cockpit of jets--after all, children already fly light planes.

Just make sure that only idiots take the ride--they'll enjoy the laugh, and the rest of us will enjoy being rid of them all.

  • Nope. I disagree. I don't want my dentist's kid handling the drill.

Kids shouldn't be in the tower.

  • HILARIOUS!!!!.... I dont even think that the pilots would acept directions from a kid if they think they were in danger.... ADIÓS!!!!

  • So stupid, who cares if the kid ran off a few and the father informed the pilots and everything was setup. It could have also of been at a time when traffic was low.

I highly doubt the father would have made the kid do it if he didn't know everything was alright. If the father gets fired I don't think it will be taken lightly by the public.

  • @westnyorai

When your house is burning down let the firemans son run in to save you instead XD

  • 7. Stupid TV people.

  • 4. Access to the tower is not a violation. Visitors to towers are welcome by prior arrangement.

    5. Peter Greenberg, CBS News Travel Editor, is uninformed and sounds close to hysterical.

    6. While Im not advocating the routine use of children on ATC radio frequencies, this is way overblown, and there was no more danger here than there ever is when training a new controller. Probably much less, since the kid was making absolutely no decisions at all, just mimicking what his father made him say.

  • Correcting Peter Greenberg, CBS News Travel Editor:

    1. No, if you listen to the calls being made, he was not handling departure control, he was on tower frequency.

    2. No, he would not need to relinquish control of the microphone. All controllers go through training periods when a master controller is on one microphone, and the trainee is on another while sitting beside.

    3. No, he would not have had to stop talking to those other pilots. See #2.

    4...

  • The kid's a distraction in the tower, both to the father and the other controllers. Shouldn't have happened and FAA needs to make sure everyone knows it was unsat. A few weeks off without pay should do the trick.

  • Way overblown. When the tower tapes are pulled, they will clearly hear an adult first telling the kid exactly what to say, then the radio transmission. These were very simple instructions. They probably practiced at home -- the boy's phraseology was flawless. An awesome father-son bonding moment has been made to sound like the kid sneaked into the tower cab and grabbed the mic away. Way overblown CBS, waaaaay overblown...

  • People are taking this way too serious. Calm down people. Its not like this kid was up there by himself. He was obviously giving correct info tom pilots and the Pilots didnt mind. CBS needs to take the stick out of its ass.

  • ok, ok.. i would be proud to be his dad. and if i were a citizen of the usa: also proud. this kind of news would encourage others kids to be awesome citizens. media is taking this the wrong way...!!!!

  • demons run the media, do u doubt me? u are wrong. it's plain to see

  • oh by the way, investigate my nuts in your mouth.. BITCH.. i want to lick that dirty bitches tits (at the beginning of the video)

  • everyone vote 1 star please, fuck this shit.

  • not acceptable, but the kid only give "light' commands. This kids got a great future as an ATC.

  • @TailsProduktions not anymore. thanks to assholes. FUCK YOU

  • who cares.. fuck u all

  • Say NO to your little fucking spoiled brats once in a while.

  • Aw come on FAA

    You know it was funny!

Sheesh, can't these people have a little fun?

    Nothing. happened.

  • This kid is more competent than all the Air Traffic Controls in the continent of Africa.

  • Comment removed

  • For those that say, all it takes is for the kid to mess up and something would of happen. listen to Rough Day For JFK Ground Control nothing but mess up there.

  • Shoulda just sticked with the paper airplanes..

  • ahah does that makes me bad that I think this is cool? The adults clearly told the kid what to say, and what orers to give, so they weren't just blabbing nonsense. That kid probably felt like king for a day

  • @RedNymph234,

When I let my 7 year old son perform heart bypass surgery on a patient, I told him which scalpel to use and which artery to cut.

    No worries!

  • Am I allowed to request a flight with SOBER pilots, Air traffic controllers who are NOT children, and Muslim WITHOUT underwear bombs!?!?

Or is it all just a crap shoot?

  • sterile cockpit applies to the pilot and the crew, not the air traffic controllers.

  • I think its cool that this kid was able to take the seat and direct air traffic, no doubt under the supervision of an adult (and yes responsible) air traffic controller. Good for that kid who has a parent or mentor who fosters interest and confidence in him.

Chill out media. Clearly the pilots weren't bothered by this. "You don't want anyone to loose their jobs..." Yeah, except perhaps CBS news who would like to milk another story out of this instead of doing any real journalism.

    Adios Amigos

  • @snowballed77,

    True...true...

I regularly bring my kid into heart-bypass surgery to participate...he's only 7 but he follow directions well.

He almost cut one patient's aorta, but luckily I caught him in time!

Next time I'm gonna let him try a heart transplant

  • @ChaseRocker,

I hope your ability to rock-out exceeds your ability to make apt and illuminating satire.

Because yeah, the plane was about to crash, but luckily someone was able to take the headset and tell the plane not to crash just in time!

  • SIXTH busiest airport! Oh my god, we're all going to die... geez, what a nonstory. It feels like it got lifted from the Onion

  • The Onion hahahahah. no shit just because it is the 6th busiest it doesnt mean it was busy at that point in time.

  • Still not as funny as Aeroflot Flight 593 in '94.

I'd like to land Maggie Rodriguez on my sterile cockpit. ;^P

  • Do they have a test to get into Broadcast Journalism. If you are IGNORANT in ALL areas, Science, History, Politics, Business... don't know much of anything, but can get all HYPED UP over Nothing, you get to (create) and report the pseudo-news!!!???

  • Is it just me or is everyone over 35 in America insane?

This is getting as much coverage as the "not a terrorist" guy who flew a plane into a building in Texas. Where was the FAA on that one?

But no - this is the story that deserves the whole "how did this happen" storyline. I hate corporate media.

  • Ever since 9/11 people think that airplanes are some nuclear missiles that people ride on from place to place! Way too wound up on all the nitty gritty.

Besides, if the public and the FAA really cared about ATCs and their safety of flights they should address the massive shortage of ATC's and the increasingly unreasonably working hours that jeopardizes thousands of lives.

  • The tampax commercial before the clip was more interesting.....

  • *lifts leg* ... *farts*

  • yea...yea...the father was telling the kid what to say

And then the kid, because he's a kid, yells out, "Watch out you're GONNA CRASH!!"

    and then who's laughing?

  • Take a FRIGGIN Chill Pill Media. Go find some Real NEWS!!! Jeesshhh... Get those Broadcasters some HORMONE Pills!!!

  • It's not a surprise that the media has gotten a hold of this and blown it out of proportion.

Obviously the kid was not "controlling traffic" on his own. A controller was clearly dictating the instructions.

While it may have been a bit of a dumb move on the controller's part, I don't believe any safety risk was created.

  • @kg6vsw,

Using your logic, why not have kids in the cockpit sitting on the pilot's lap.

So long as the pilot tells the kid which button to push, which way to steer...NO PROBLEM!

    *facepalm*

  • That happened in Russia several years ago in an Airbus. The kid lost control and everyone aboard was killed.

  • yeah but the kid wasn;'t driving...just saying what the adults would have normally said--they just instructed the kid,.,...so your analogy of the kid driving a plane is like comparing apples to oranges

  • I agree people need to get over it! Including the F.A.A. This kid has a future and all the folks around were licensed something, wither Pilots or Air Traffic Controllers. Maybe Capt "Sully" Sullenberger can teach him how to fly early so he can be a great pilot later, not just an ATC. Hey FAA hows the Air Marshal program working? This kid is more competent than the WHOLE Department of Homeland Stupidity. The DHS "adults" let Mr. Funny pants fly across the world with explosives in his draws.

  • holy shit!! i watch CBS

  • The report is a total whack job. It was clear that the controller was working a active runway - clearing landings and take offs - not handling departures who are airborne. The media is taking this whole thing out of proportion, including the FAA. The dad was telling his child exactly what to say, and the pilots were advised of the situation. That so-called expert needs to get his facts right.

How do you expect future ATC's in their youth to gather interest in this type of profession.

  • Absolutely mad. The pilots who cooperated with that nutter should get the sack too.

All those safety regulations designed to ensure the safety of air travel and some dim witted idiot brings his kid in to direct air traffic control at one of the busiest airports in the world! Wow, wtf!

The kid's father should never be allowed to work in air traffic control again.

  • get off your high horse

  • So What, nothing like detouring the American mind of real problems like health care that kills thousands of people every day because insurance conglomerates denies coverage and gets a BIG bonus, thousands of civilians being slaughtered every day so we can steal their oil and Jews murdering children in Palestine for their land. Just another day under this fascist rule! Thank you for letting me vent my outrage, all part of the command and control design.

  • I used to talk on the radio. My Dad gave me the script. It was uncontrolled airspace, though. Other pilots would reply back with their 10-4s etc as I would announce our arrival and departure. I was doing this and flying an airplane at age 5. Just no biggie.

  • Absurd. The other pilots enjoyed it, and nothing bad happened. They let their kid say the same words he wouldve said, like letting your kid play the siren on your car if youre a cop car. Big deal. Let JFK be more concerned about securing the gates and not allowing their failures to get swept under the carpet. I just love how when shoe bombs make it onto planes, its all "oh we're so shocked it happened, we'll look into it" and nothing happens but this is a federal case. DUMB

  • Let Obama's daughter take 2 o'clock phone calls

  • A simulator might have been the best avenue for strengthening father son rapport. The mentality of the media and/or FAA administration is merely a fact of existence. The mentality of the FAA employee obviously did not consider this extra fact when he took liberties with a standard business is business model. It exemplifies carelessness regardless of no impact on operational safety.

  • I just heard about this, you know I thought it was funny. Watched it on yahoo's news though and got to hear more about it. You know it's not like the guy who let his son do this should get off scott-free but I don't think he was acting like an idiot. A bit carefree yes concerning his job but the kid really knew the stuff. And the father got to bring him to work. That takes father-son relationships to a new level of fun. I approve with my tradmark kudos.

    Kudos

  • Wow this so-called expert,... my god. Guy has no clue.

He claims the kid's father was working departure.... and was ignoring other pilots when you clearly hear the kid say "CONTACT DEPARTURE".

Im not condoning what happened, but ffs, its not that big of a deal. Typical media, so desperate for a story and ratings.

  • I listened to the recording of the boy talking with the pilots... the REAL recording, not one doctored by the media.

The kid did a fine job, definitely better than anyone reporting on this "story"... stupid media.

  • oh get over it. fuckin reporters are so ghey

  • Interesting point here: The reporter, as is most common in terms of reporting anything to do with aviation, is wrong. The controller (child) was in the tower position, not departure as reported. The child's phraseology was accurate and clear. Only the non-essential "adios" was questionable. When air traffic controllers are in training, they are monitered by a rated air traffic controller who has the capability to override the trainee. These reporters and non-aviation people love drama.

  • thats it 4 "take ur daughter 2 work day" give the bloody man a break, no harm was done, blame the person who create the damm thing

how about take ur in-laws 2 work day?
