About a year ago I became enamored by this song after watching Ken Burn's Civil War. After coming to Youtube I found your version and become more obsessed. Your playing really inspired me and I picked up a guitar. A year ago I was able to scratch out the basic tune of this song, but I can proudly say I have learned the entire fingerstyle tab of this song and it is the best feeling in the world. You have inspired a life long hobby for me and I can't thank you enough.
This is an incredible piece of music. As a semi-professional musician, I have the same philosophy about music as you, and I must say it's always refreshing to see someone willing to share their music with anyone!
I wish I could hit that thumbs up a million times! It was so very calm and peaceful! Do you by any chance have tabs or sheet music for this beautiful piece!
Beautiful performance and great arrangement. So far I think I'd have to rate this rendition as my personal favorite of the list of covers for this song on YouTube OK Whitey, you've convinced me, I'm off now to hear more of your stuff.
I had to say - I've been mesmerized - captivated - haunted by this tune and over the past week have listened to almost every version on almost every instrument and of all the guitar versions - your is by far the very best. Clean - direct - sensitive haunting - powerful. It must feel so good to be able to make such beautiful music. Congratulations on having this wonderful talent.
Since I started hanging out at the Youtube landfill, I've discovered that the music that most appeals to me is often the most simple. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
even though I like this better on violin, its great for guitar!!!! Did you know that ashokan farewell is not actually a civil war song? but ken burns still used it...
Yes. It was written by Jay Unger, who is still alive and enjoying the celebrity of having written this tune. I agree the violin is probably the better instrument for this tune. That's where it was born after all.
All I can say is...wow. absolutley buetifully done. Ken Burns should call this man if a sequel should be done. -and I believe one could be done showing the Midwestern states role in the Civil War which is largely forgotten. Jessee James and other outlaws were luitinants and officers during that war taking place in Missouri and Kansas.

yeah. I am from iowa, and most people don't know that iowans save the union forces twice at shiloh from complete disaster. AND the iron brigade saved gettysburg
Truly my favorite part of the Civil War which was a classic. Such a beautiful heart stirrring arrangement that captured the spirit of the Civil war, it's tragedy and triumph.
Jay, I recently commented on your rendition of Ashokan Farewell. I have noticed several acoustic renditions of Sound of Silence. Have you done this yet. If not I would like to hear it if you ever get a chance. Anyway thanks for the great acoustic work you do. Phill Cooley
This is really nice and it suits nylon strings which I love. Well transcribed too. I am hoping that Martin Tallstrom (pinofluvius on youtube) will record a version too sometime -well I have suggested to him that he should. Keep posting your tunes please.
I got the CD set, (Ken Burns, Civil War) a couple years ago for Christmas . . . still watch it over and over. This tune sets deep within us all who know the documentary and love music. This is the version I like the best on the guitar. Great job, thanks for posting.
I so love this version. I've chosen the Jay and Molly version for my mother's funeral next week, wish I'd had this one though, it's so much gentler in sound. Truly beautiful.
Nicely done. Very full sound. My version is a single note melody, (that I got off the internet), it's okay but...could use some "supporting" chords. A 5 star for your version.
this was my grandmothers favorite song and she just recently passed away, and it was played at her funeral but on piano, thanks for putting up the tab beccause im now learning it on her honor
Beautiful. I think the feeling you put into it matches the technique. Bravo! I just began learning this piece as arranged by my teacher and your rendition will no doubt influence my own take on it. Thanks for sharing, and I'm looking forward to your other clips.
Thanks. It's become one of my favorite pieces to play. I hope you'll post your teacher's arrangement. I'd like to hear other interpretations of this tune.
is this in standard tuning no capo? your tab you linked sounds a bit off from what your actually playing or did you just spice it up a bit

@22shr forget what i said... its accurate.... im an idiot :)

@22shr The capo is invisible, but it's on the 2nd fret. Optional, of course.

It's interesting how you use finger style
in this song I only have the single note
tab which sounds good all the while, though
using the finger style places a melodic
feel into Ashokan farewell. I always enjoy playing lead type songs like this. Well done
nice video
