  • is this in standard tuning no capo? your tab you linked sounds a bit off from what your actually playing or did you just spice it up a bit

  • @22shr forget what i said... its accurate.... im an idiot :)

  • @22shr The capo is invisible, but it's on the 2nd fret. Optional, of course.

  • Nice chord melody version.

  • About a year ago I became enamored by this song after watching Ken Burn's Civil War. After coming to Youtube I found your version and become more obsessed. Your playing really inspired me and I picked up a guitar. A year ago I was able to scratch out the basic tune of this song, but I can proudly say I have learned the entire fingerstyle tab of this song and it is the best feeling in the world. You have inspired a life long hobby for me and I can't thank you enough.

  • @fightinirish258 Thanks for commenting. I hope your inspiration lasts a life time. Mine tends to eb and flow.

  • Hi

Just listened to you play and I enjoyed it.

    Thank you

    Derek.

  • Beautifully done!

  • All I can say is awesome. This is one of the most beautiful pieces ever written and you sir do it proad.

  • Nicely played!

  • That was incredibly beautiful.

  • Very nicely done, thanks:)

  • Someone said he can listen to your music all a day.

That's what I did today. You're amazing. Thank you for your "peaceful guitar".

  • @lareponse42 Thank you. If I'd known someone was going to pay this much attention, I would have taken more guitar lessons.

  • Beautiful man

  • This is an incredible piece of music. As a semi-professional musician, I have the same philosophy about music as you, and I must say it's always refreshing to see someone willing to share their music with anyone!

  • awsome from morocco

  • Beautifully played! Bravo! You make it look effortless!

  • I wish I could hit that thumbs up a million times! It was so very calm and peaceful! Do you by any chance have tabs or sheet music for this beautiful piece!

  • @SecretAsianMan97 There's a link in the text below the video.

  • anybody got a trumpet transcription for this radiant rhapsody?

  • Like it. Used to hearing it on the fiddle, but the guitar sounds terrific. Well done.

  • Outstanding! Love the tone and rendition.

  • Absolutely beautiful. I'm learning this piece just now - it could take me a few weeks I think.

I like the tone, well done and thank you.

  • Apart from being a great guitarist you are also a very good and kind individual......

  • Beautiful guitar work .Well executed with smooth and pleasant tone.

  • Beautiful performance and great arrangement. So far I think I'd have to rate this rendition as my personal favorite of the list of covers for this song on YouTube OK Whitey, you've convinced me, I'm off now to hear more of your stuff.

  • I had to say - I've been mesmerized - captivated - haunted by this tune and over the past week have listened to almost every version on almost every instrument and of all the guitar versions - your is by far the very best. Clean - direct - sensitive haunting - powerful. It must feel so good to be able to make such beautiful music. Congratulations on having this wonderful talent.

  • Since I started hanging out at the Youtube landfill, I've discovered that the music that most appeals to me is often the most simple. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

  • Favorited!!!

  • well done !

  • standard tuning?

  • Aye.

  • I remember when I played it in orchestra back in the days.....I sucked....lol. but I loved the piece, haha.

  • Very nice job!

    Dave

  • sir, you are very, very good, i could listen to this all day

  • even though I like this better on violin, its great for guitar!!!! Did you know that ashokan farewell is not actually a civil war song? but ken burns still used it...

  • Yes. It was written by Jay Unger, who is still alive and enjoying the celebrity of having written this tune. I agree the violin is probably the better instrument for this tune. That's where it was born after all.

  • All I can say is...wow. absolutley buetifully done. Ken Burns should call this man if a sequel should be done. -and I believe one could be done showing the Midwestern states role in the Civil War which is largely forgotten. Jessee James and other outlaws were luitinants and officers during that war taking place in Missouri and Kansas.

yeah. I am from iowa, and most people don't know that iowans save the union forces twice at shiloh from complete disaster. AND the iron brigade saved gettysburg

  • that is an absolutely wonderful version of an absolutely wonderful song. well done, that was beautiful. : )

  • 5 stars =) love it =)

    -juli

  • You have nice tone.

  • Truly my favorite part of the Civil War which was a classic. Such a beautiful heart stirrring arrangement that captured the spirit of the Civil war, it's tragedy and triumph.

  • That is probably the most beautiful guitar version I've heard of this. Super!

  • Beautiful. =)

  • Beautiful. Thank you for posting this.

  • Jay, I recently commented on your rendition of Ashokan Farewell. I have noticed several acoustic renditions of Sound of Silence. Have you done this yet. If not I would like to hear it if you ever get a chance. Anyway thanks for the great acoustic work you do. Phill Cooley

  • absolutely beautiful. thank you.

  • You did such a wonderful job on this beautiful song. I posted it on my facebook for my family to hear. Thanks for sharing your great talent with us.

  • Thanks for the compliment ... I'll try to earn it.

  • Wonderful,wonderful,wonderful:)

  • Great playing.

Is it possible to get the tab or notes or gp/powt/tabedit for this one?

  • There's a link to the tab in the video information text. Just select 'more info' and you should see it.

  • Don't know that I've ever heard that song sound any better than that........

    Thanks

  • Absolutely lovely.

  • This is really nice and it suits nylon strings which I love. Well transcribed too. I am hoping that Martin Tallstrom (pinofluvius on youtube) will record a version too sometime -well I have suggested to him that he should. Keep posting your tunes please.

  • Thank you. I agree; it's a great arrangement. It will have a permanent home in my repertoire.

  • hey, nice to meet you guys again :)

    Great playing!

Well, I was looking around for the Farewell (following syncopater´s suggestion) and this is best guitar version I´ve heard so far!

    Martin

  • pure...simple beauty. thank you!

  • Well done sir, well done indeed.

  • Thank you. Denny Straussfogel did a great job on the arrangement.

  • This is the gutar song I love a lot !

And thanks for your tab of Hymne à l'Amour !!

  • Thank you and have fun with the tab.

  • c'est manifique!

  • Merci.

  • Very sweet, beautiful - is it your own arrangement? Excellent.

  • I believe Denny Straussfogel is the arranger.

  • Beautifully done. Thank you for the tabs and inspiration.

  • That was beautiful.

    Thanks for the tab

  • Thanks. Have fun with the tab.

  • Great playing there mate :) and thanks for providing the transcription.

  • Thanks for the comment and have fun with the tab.

  • Thanks for posting this. I never thought I would enjoy the song without the violin, but you pulled it off. Cheers.

  • Thanks for stopping by.

  • Beautiful! Many thanks for sharing the link to the tablature.

  • You're welcome. Have fun.

  • That's gorgeous. Thanks.

  • i´m so impressed by your picking...i only heard the violin/guitar tune...and now such a perfect single guitar tuned version...im so very impressed

    thank you

  • Thanks. Jay Unger wrote a beautiful piece of music and I'm grateful that Denny Straussfogel found an easy way to play it on the guitar.

  • This is a beautiful song and you did a beautiful job! We played this in orchestra and it was no where near this but AMAZING JOB!

  • Thanks. I'd like to hear an orchestral arrangement of this.

  • I got the CD set, (Ken Burns, Civil War) a couple years ago for Christmas . . . still watch it over and over. This tune sets deep within us all who know the documentary and love music. This is the version I like the best on the guitar. Great job, thanks for posting.

  • One thing I've learned since I started watching Youtube: more often than not the best arrangements are the simpler ones.

  • i would actually like the tabs also if thats fine?

your an amazing musician and i really want to learn this song.

    Beautiful job.

  • There's a link to the tab in the video text.

  • oldwhitey, what make and model guitar are ou playing?

  • It's a Taylor NS32CE. It sounds better in person. I can't figure out how to record it any better than I can figure out how to play it.

  • I could, but you can get it from a link in the video description.

  • That is absolutely beautiful. Can you e-mail the tab to me?

  • absolutely beautiful

  • Thanks and praise be to Jay Unger for writing such a beautiful tune.

  • It's interesting how you use finger style

in this song I only have the single note

tab which sounds good all the while, though

using the finger style places a melodic

feel into Ashokan farewell. I always enjoy playing lead type songs like this. Well done

    nice video

  • Thank you.

  • Superb!

  • You hold the guitar like a lover...your enjoyment of your art shows.

  • I so love this version. I've chosen the Jay and Molly version for my mother's funeral next week, wish I'd had this one though, it's so much gentler in sound. Truly beautiful.

  • Thanks for the compliment. I've found a lot of guitar gems on Youtube and this is one of them.

  • Nicely done. Very full sound. My version is a single note melody, (that I got off the internet), it's okay but...could use some "supporting" chords. A 5 star for your version.

    --Van

  • Thanks for the comment. I wish I could take credit for the arrangement.

  • this was my grandmothers favorite song and she just recently passed away, and it was played at her funeral but on piano, thanks for putting up the tab beccause im now learning it on her honor

  • Sorry for your loss. I hope you enjoy the tab. It's not terribly difficult.

  • thanks, and ive already learned it, i love it

  • From one who has been playing for many years...excellent.

  • Thanks. I've been struggling against this 6-stringed demon for many years myself. It usually gives me a serious beating.

  • Splendid, my friend.

  • Beautiful. I think the feeling you put into it matches the technique. Bravo! I just began learning this piece as arranged by my teacher and your rendition will no doubt influence my own take on it. Thanks for sharing, and I'm looking forward to your other clips.

  • Thanks. It's become one of my favorite pieces to play. I hope you'll post your teacher's arrangement. I'd like to hear other interpretations of this tune.

  • that was absolutely beautiful! would you mind telling me where you got the tabs for this?

  • I wouldn't mind, but I don't remember where I found it. I'll send you what I've got, though.

  • Outstanding.

  • A great song and very nicely played. Thanks for making the tab available.

  • I loved that... would you be willing to send the tabs if I gave you my email dress

  • Certainly.

  • Great job!

  • Lovely playing on a moving tune. Nicely done. Is the tab available?

  • I can email you the tab, if you'd like.

  • If you could, please. Sent a private e-mail with address.

    Kevin

  • Well done mate, lovely rendition

  • Thanks, mate.

  • is the arrangement available in notation or only tabs

  • Just tab.

  • so beautiful...great job...!!!

  • Beautiful Mike. I was watching this only the other day another postee(?). This is far more polished and played by a great wit to boot!

    Great stuff.

    Regards,

    paul

  • Thanks, Paul. I rely heavily on the kind encouragement of folks like yourself.

  • Mike! That's fantastic! You are playing this SO well! It looks like you further refined your technique? Thank you, i really enjoyed this :)

    Regards, Wilfried

  • Thanks, Wilfried. I hope I'm improving a little. I'll bet this tune would fit comfortably on the Uke.

  • Hi Mike, One of my favorite tunes, elegantly played with tender phrasing. Great arrangement, thanks for sharing. Cheers, GR

  • Thanks. It is a good arrangement for people like me. Not a lot of technical difficulty, but it sounds neat ... when you hit the notes properly.

  • What a lovely tune, Mr. Mike! Nicely played!!

    Best regards,

    Julie

  • Thank you. I did some research and discovered that I have the sheet music for your recent Tarrega tune. I guess I have a new one to learn.
