Just an FYI this is a different species of bearded dragon. the ones in pet stores are central bearded dragons. that one I believe is called an eastern bearded dragon. Or did I get them mixed up? At any rate that bearded dragon is a different kind of bearded dragon then pet bearded dragons.

wild bearded dragons are generally darker than captive bred ones because they need to absorb as much heat and uv rays as possible, did you put him on that fence post?? if so thats probably why he's so defensive...

I have a female whos beard puffs and gets blackish whenever she sees my Tegu. Guarentee sure she isn't trying to have lizard sex with my Tegu. That'd be a crazy baby though :o

@MetalMulisha1991 Thats not true. A black beard is generally a sign of stress. I have a female and she gets a black beard when she is stressed, and so do males. Whether or not they get it when they are looking for a mate i am not sure, but it could be true. They also darken up to absorb more sun sometimes. Don't spout stuff off if you don't know the facts.

My bearded dragon which is a sand fire, turned fully black when I held a alligator head up to the glass of her tank (It was a gift from my brother from his trip to New Orleans) So I have indeed seen a bearded dragon turn its entire body straight black but I think they do it only when they feel highly threatened.
