They (Anne Murray and Eva Cassidy) were both amazing artists but in the early '90s when Anne Murray was a fully established star & had been for 15 years by that time, Eva was playing a couple clubs in the D.C. area & selling cassette tapes from the trunk of her car. Several labels approached her but wanted to peg her into 1 category (jazz, blues, etc). She was never signed while she lived because she refused to only record one style of music. D.C. became a sad place when she passed away in '96.

I love Anne Murray's version of this song and bought it when it came out (on tape back then; now you can get it on her hits CD. I also saw Eva in person at the blues club she performed at many, many times in Washington, D.C.

While I love both artists you would have to be tone deaf to think that's Eva and not Anne...different voice, no blues or jazz chords that Eva was so famous for adding to songs when she sang.

..Part 2: Lori recorded the song on her self titled debut album in 1971. The arrangement in Anne Murray's cover version is almost identical to Lori's original, the only real difference being the voice, and that Murray's being a minute and a half shorter in length.

If you like this song, I'd advise checking out the Lieberman original to hear where it all began, it's great and my favorite, with this Anne Murray rendition a close tie!

You're right, it's not Eva Cassidy. It's Anne Murray. This is from her "Danny's Song" album. Also, this rare, but wonderful version was recorded BEFORE Roberta Flack's famous hit version. Anne was probably the second artist to record the song, although some say Perry Como's version came second.

The original was by Lori Lieberman, a young (possibly still a teenager) folk singer who happened to see Don Mclean and wrote a poem that was turned into a song by Gimbel and Fox..To be cont.
