I'm pretty sure Meshuggah named "Obsidian" as a reference to the fact that a nuclear explosion turns sand into glass, or obsidian. This video goes with the song perfectly.
This music is so heavy and dark it has transformed sound waves into a toxic sludge entering my ears.
Obsidian, a form of rock, has been used by mankind since the beginning of history to create sharp objects, used as weapons.
The album Nothing was a rushed release, and i wonder if the last track Obsidian was purposely used as a filler, as if the members of meshuggah came up with this song as an artistic retaliation towards the record company's "make haste, make waste" attitude.
Dude I hated this song until i watched this video! I thought it was monotonous and boring until now. THANK YOU so much for showing me the true beauty of this song!
The beginning guitar loops feel like SOMETHING is going to go to hell, and then the heavy metal coupled with the explosions feels like the end of the world. Awesome job, man!
Good to see I'm not the only person who thought this song goes along with something like complete destruction. This should be the soundtrack to the end of the world. This would probably be the only song, too because it would be too quick to play something else.
Good video, too...for once a fan-made music video that is good. This looks like something Meshuggah would actually do if they wanted to make a video for this song.
that was a dummy, dummy it's not your fault with shows these days they always use strings and shit so much that people don't even realise that people don't move like in the matrix sequels- its annoying
xD OK!, maybe it was a slightly silly question, but also it is perfectly possible to film someone flying because of the shock wave of an explosion like that. And... you don't have to get annoyed for any kind of comment, much less for that one which I didn't indeed fill with my best intellectual abilities, mate. I'm aware of special effects, the thing that made me ask that is the old-like quality of the scene. Relaxxx!
This song is really perfect for its position on the album. When you first hear this CD and you get to this song you think its a nice happily ever after ending, but then they bring you back to the brutal reality of things.
I seem to like the original better because it's just even heavier. It's so heavy that I'm still dealing with Monday night's rendevous with Nothing. I've never heard a heavier album in my lifetime, and I probably won't ever.
Seems all I can find at my Best Buy is the remastered Nothing....I do have all the tracks except Glints Collide from the first version collected.
Should have used the remastered version, had a much bigger impact, atleast on me

I think the name is means that obsidian was in fact humankind first weapon
and that at modern times, probably the last weapon has already been made.
