Don't get me wrong, they did do a lot of acid...but their personalities aren't drastically different when they aren't on it anyway. I think you could be right about Paul, as far as him being bored...I just think he doesn't like to be too serious about what he is doing. although you did not ask ME, i am going to answer your question: it is quite natural for many people to listen to "such" music, if they are simply not limited to the conservative and narrow harmonies of western culture's music. it has nothing to do with the quality of the music played, but with habits. it's the same with music from other continents, e.g. asia or africa, which is based on complete different musical notations and sounds weird or even "unpleasant". but: drugs help.

you don't sound cocky. of course you don't necessarily have to do acid to enjoy or get used to unusual music. it is just a little help. just as you do not need drugs to listen to free jazz or so called new music. i don't think you can really call it a habit. but of course you have to "open up" your acoustic perception to difficult music. classic rock is more simple to "get used to" than jazz. it is also a matter of expanding interest in sounds and their effects.
