I am so saddened that I didn't know who Les Paul was until his death in 2009. I have been highly inspired by his music and work, which has motivated me to pursue great skill in the world of guitar. I thank you Les Paul, Jimmy Page, and Scotty Moore for the joy and influence you have brought this 17 year old.
@EpicCentral i DID know him and i can tell you he was everything you have heard and more...an honest gentleman from a different time and place for sure..but yes he was a sincere loving person who never said a bad word about anyone..did he have some regets??sure but you would never know it i was at his memorial in NY with Pat Martino(my mentor)and ALL the heavey weights WHERE there Ritenour,Carlton,Martino,Rufus Reed,Di Meola,it was a speacial speacial day there wasnt a dry eye in the room.
Wow -cut off in mid-sentence- how rude! Anyhow, glad to have had the pleasure of meeting him & talking with him a couple of times back in the 70's ...once when he came to a local bar along with his lovely young wife, probably less than half his age, to watch Danny Gatton play!
The guitar Les has on the table looks very much like "The Log" -an experimental instrument he made out of an Ephiphone arch top guitar around 1941, cutting it apart and inserting a solid pine block in the middle, in order to study it's effect on amplified sound. Looking at a picture of the actual "Log" in a guitar reference book, there are a couple of differences -most noticeable are the fretboard inlays.
A remarkable instrument created by an even more remarkable man! Glad to have had the plea
Ahh... nothing like listening to Darktown Strutters Ball to help me find something. Just yesterday I listened to it 6 times straight and found my long-lost dignity! :D
@luistijerina Les pioneered a load of things other than guitars and electric processing. Most only now know that his arm was fixed one one place at an angle where he could still play, ( shattered in a car accident ). His playing style was just sick. from playing early country and cowboy tunes, I'd wager he learned a number of lfat picking tricks that he brought to jazz.
You understand this is the inventor of the electric guitar as we know it, multi-tracking, basically the founder of modern studio music, plus one of the most brilliant virtuosi of the instrument ever?
The music is great - though of course studio-produced, complete with multi-track effects, not home-improvised. OTOH, the retrograde cultural assumptions and inter-spliced commercials are somewhere between ridiculous and comical. At least the theme song isn't white bread....(G)
@eclectix2 um....yeah. And Les Paul INVENTED multi-track recording. So, naturally, he used it. DUH! If you have no cultural awareness of white america of 1953, you have a lot of learning to do. And, if you thought for a minute this was a spontaneous performance, you have even more to learn. You possibly know that he also is the namesake of a famous guitar model. But, maybe not.
In that commercial, she should pour listerine all over her her lips and face before she kisses her husband with that herpes sore he has on his upper lip.
@TheEcHo5411 Wes Montgomery. Django Reinhardt. Charlie Christian. Chuck Berry. Yes, Les had amazing chops, and was a genius in development of electronic gadgets. But to say no one, well, that's just not true.

How freakin' cool would that be, just having a '56 Les Paul Custom sitting around there, just waiting for you take a break from sweeping the floor or doing the dishes to whip out a rocking little swing tune?
People didn't know how good they had it, when they could sit in their living room and spend five minutes with Les Paul and Mary Ford. Unless they got all paranoid about their breath.
This is a great look at Les Paul's Epiphone "LOG" which is a big jazz box Epiphone cut in half with a fence post carved down and set though the middle. The neck was then reset in a new neck pocket joint. This is the guitar on the table not the one he is playing. The body is kind of crooked looking, but it plays. He used it on "How High The Moon" as well as other recordings, but as a "Gibson Artist" seeing him play this on video is rare. Here it is used as a prop for their little skit.
Les Killed that Guitar! And Mary has the sweetest Voice around! These are Decent folks, and This Music is PURE Americana! They won't make it like this anymore! Les Paul & Mary Ford for EVER! Thanks for posting.
