Man that car is so awesome, like what I used to do years ago!
I find that making the engine spin at a higher rpm with a heavy flywheel then gearing it down to the wheels gives a more constant performance. I also made a RC clutch so it could idle, so awesome.
If I do make another lego engine I will be making some kind of throttle control, and RC it all.
u know what would be great? make a bunch of these and race them except tape like names to them like gm and toyota. and then with some cool music and camera angles it would be awesome!

Let me guess, was it bore out the inlet holes for more speed? Or fine tune the timing of the valves? Or use lubricant? Lol
