Great find! I'm sure that most will disagree with me, but this is one of the few recordings I've seen and heard with the "passion" that I think Linda had when he wrote and recorded mBube. I'm not sure what he'd have thought of the style, but I'm sure he would have loved the heart!
he had a great voice, also dont forget the real genius that is the guitar player, he was brilliant before clapton hendrix et al and never mentioned when great players are mentioned
@homolgus : Trouble was, image and appearance were everything in those days (cf Ian Stewart with the Rolling Stones). Many's the superb muso who had to be satisfied with playing on the sessions for some skinny long-haired little git who grabbed all the glory.
Two song's that make Karl Denver (for me anyway) one of the bestsingers, this is one & "Voices of the Highlands" is the other. What a great voice to loose
@stewarthw It´s not his, the song is originally from solomon linda, and it´s called "mbube", it was recorded in the 30´s. Altough I agree with you, this is a beautiful performance, and it touches us deeply. great voice.
@BrokenneckYgor Yes but in his autobiography ( "Living next door to a hero") Izzo Lumumbai admitted that he heard someone from the next street singing it first, in 1948, although he was the first to actually write it down.
I've known Kevin Neill who is the guitar player on the right and a nicer man you couldn't wish to meet. First time I've seen him perform and he's still at it!!!
This single was in amongst our records at home when I was a kid in the 1970s. It seemed a v old record to me even then. Listening to it I couldn't believe it was ever in the charts, but here it is. It's kind of grown on me over the years.
No one done it as good as Carl R.I.P carl

I love this song but at the start he sounds like Vic Reeves doing the cabaret singer on shooting stars

Nelson Mandela's next door neighbour, Israel "Izzo" Lumumbai, wrote this in 1950

Wiki The Lion Sleeps Tonight... the song is by Solomon Linda, and his group, the Evening Birds recorded back in 1939.

Nice find! I have (and still play) this, the original and best version, although the record is much slower. Will speed it up next time I play it!
