“Circumcellions”. Catholic heresy cult of the 300’s and 400’s. First-rate Christian drama-seekers keen enough to figure out you had to die to get to heaven, not keen enough to figure out there was any meaning to earthly life beforehand. So they would hang by the side of the road with a sword and a club, beating passers-by w/ club until said passers-by volunteered to kill them w/ sword. This play—suicide by stranger—is oddly reminiscent. Hard to believe there was once an organization for this.
Really nice interpretation. You clearly have Jerry's character well internalized, and can bring him to life in a genuine way. It's a bit much at points, but then, so is Jerry. Once you're in his sites and have opened the door just a crack, you can't shake him. Your Jerry stands too close, coops your time, and changes your life. (applause.)
Splendid performance! I have had the privilege of being involved in this show before as Peter, and in retrospect, I would have loved very much to have had the energy you give Jerry's person to work with and feed off of. Bravo to you.
I liked it. The subtle and not subtle switching of tormented emotions/confusion, then smug, got it under controlness in your face was fascinating to watch. Very interesting to me. I felt the same, 'oh he's normal, wait, he just scared me.' that I felt when I read the play. Good job IMHO
I like your ability to make all the language come to life - so many actors rush to get to the "good stuff." Also, I find your choice of Jerry as a working class guy who despite appearances is intelligent and with a good vocabulary is very interesting and works. I have never seen this choice. People who live or have lived in NY will get this, others may not.
In the first minute your Jerry comes off as deeply disturbed and disoriented. In the context of the play it doesn't work.
If Jerry were so obviously disturbed, there is no way Peter, an uptight upper middle class exec, would engage with him.
Also, I do not think it works in the context of your monologue. It comes off a bit indulgent.
If you started the post 45-60 seconds later I think it would be better, and although it still might not everyone's cup of tea, I think it would be brilliant.
That's what Albee says about what has changed over time with The Zoo Story; in the original production he WAS played as disturbed (as Albee wanted) because in the 1950s people would not have felt a danger, even speaking with a disturbed person. After the decline in New York in the 60s/70s/80s The Zoo Story took on a different timbre, so Jerry became much more toned down than in the original production(s).
Good point, but I still respectfully disagree. It is a matter of degree. What you are referring to is the problem actors today have with how this conversation could take place at all.
I like the monlogue, but 20-30 seconds of showing us just how disturbed Jerry is, b4 speaking, was unnecessary. You make a valid point, but my observation still holds. Again, otherwise a very good performance, the best on Youtube.
I was just simply saying (or rather, Albee has) that it is time that has changed execution rather than intention. Jerry was intended to be disturbed, but with fifty years between then and now it no longer makes sense. Peter is, as he says, "reticent" to speak with Jerry; but Albee has stated, many times, that in the 50s you could end up having a conversation with someone who is "disturbed" without feeling danger for yourself -- which was his intention.
This was a joke, right? Tell me it was a joke. If not, it is the absolute worst piece of shit attempt at Jerry I believe I have ever seen. Especially from someone whom claims to know better. You, sir, are NO actor.
Well, lets see-I have a BFA from Julliard in Acting, an MFA from Harvard, been a member of AEA for 28 yrs, worked over 120 AEA contracts, did Jerry Off-Broadway for 7 months, had a part written specifically for ME by Albee on a later play ... oh, and Albee has said on National TV and print that I was the closest to his vision of Jerry he's ever seen. I guess THATS what makes me an "expert" on acting and THATS what I know of Albee. So, who the fuck are YOU? U Dont even know what AEA means - IDIOT
Saturninus - Thank you. Great to hear from another Tuba, and a thrill to know you enjoyed my effort. Albee is a living treasure. Alas, I ain't got no more of his stuff. However, I'll be posting a piece by Harold Pinter (Briggs from No Man's Land) pretty soon - and another Shakespeare is on its way. Thank you for your own Man Who Would Be King. Caine and Connery? What a team!

I can readily see you do some of Jack Nicholson's films like the one where he turns into a werewolf.

I have agreed with you. But you mis-hear Albee. He refers to the why or how the conversation could occur at all.
But even in the 50s, if Jerry is too crazy Peter leaves. I believe that line was crossed here.
It looked to me like an actor getting into character. He doesn't need it, and should cut that part from the video. It is otherwise fine work.
In any portrayal Jerry is disturbed; he impales himself on a knife!
But its a tightrope - there needs to be a balance.

Thanks for your useful comments O.M.
Chopping off the 1st. 20 seconds (at least!) might help this video a good deal.
And it needs to be a little snappier throughout. Glad you approve the choice of 'working class' - as you put it.
