  • Marvelous! And what a treat to see a very young Mike Hyman! I met Mike in 1979 when he was 20 touring with trumpeter John McNeil. They also did a big band seminar with the band I played in. i was 14 and was totally blown away by Mike´s drumming. What a ugely underrated talent!!!!

  • The Thinking Mans Tenor........

  • I wish I'd gotten to see him live!

  • Yes, it is 1977, probably around March: it was then when I saw this same quartet at the Bergamo Jazz festival, in northern Italy; from there to Lugano, Switzerland, where this set was probably recorded, its about an hour by car.

  • Joe was such a sound musician. He was fearless and so exciting saxophonist. The tenor saxophonists of today make me nuts in how 99% of them just copy Trane, Brecker or Rollins. But Joe was totally his own man.

  • At 3.25, is that Jimi Hendrix Filming Joe? Haha I guess even the greatest of musicians had day jobs at some point .

  • @Aaronlongville Jimi was dead by 1977, kinda looks like Stanley Clarke to me (it's definitely not though), lol!

  • Joe had it all and then some..what a player...

  • mmmmmm yea

  • Joe was probably the last great improviser...

  • So unique, so beautiful, so creative. He's doing what no other saxophonist is doing at the time. Truly, truly inspiring

  • Joe's sound is very beautiful--one of the best I have heard.

  • Joe has such a great sound!! i love his playing

  • I think Mike Hyman was actually about 16-18 years old when he was on the road with Joe. I do think your are close on the performance dates - it was the late 70s..

  • Joe is amazing!! Thanks for putting this up!

  • Escreva no youtube MORAISITO AMETISTA e se possível, não veja essa música como simples música... Não veja as fotos como simples fotos, Se for possível, não veja esse video...

  • I said this on a Coltrane video, but damn, same thing here. The rest of humanity will catch up say... 2040? Cuz this $h1t is just ridiculous!

  • Steve Erquiaga is a pretty cool dude, I met him a few years ago and he showed me a few chord ideas that I was able to work into my bag of tricks. I'll always be thankful for that. Joe Hen is so unique, love it.

  • love joe henderson

  • What chops!!! This is the kind of incredible playing that made Joe famous in the 60's. Knocks my socks off every time.

  • ...and Erq looks like Tony Orlando!

  • I first started playing music with Mike Hyman in 1968 when he was 9 years old, not 13. I was 13!

  • Joe Henderson can sound just as dope on uptempos as well as ballads.........

    What a fantastic musician!

  • What tune are they playing in this video?

  • It's "no me esqeuca"

  • Comment removed

  • Sounds like Flora Purim....and in the distance a bit like The Proclaimers

  • sorry its "recordeme"

  • @kwamegeez When Joe plays it with that intro, and at this slightly faster tempo, he quite often called it as its revised name, "no me esqueca", as opposed to its original title, "Recordame".

  • Recordame

  • JoeHen... what a beast!

  • Henderson One of my favorites saxophone players

  • the drummer was just 18

  • Joe is always fabulous no matter who he is playing with! and this is a perfect example of that!! Thank you for the post!

  • Recorda Me
