@schnieef His older stuff is way better, his stuff with Morton, and the recordings he made around 1945. He was over 70 years old by this point. I'm sorry but I love Kid Ory and I think your being unfair.
The reason you say this is the inferior recording quality. I heard Ory live during the late forties, the fifties and into the early sixties before he moved to Hawaii. His tone and playing were wonderful, strong, expressive and very musical. About this time, the same band played in Las Vegas. Alvin Alcorn, the trumpet player on this video, told me that Louis Armstrong came by to hear the band in Vegas. Armstrong shared that Ory and his band was the real New Orleans Jazz.
Sorry, I know this is Red Allen on trumpet on this Royal Garden Blues video. But at about this same time, Alvin Alcorn did play trumpet with Kid Ory, in Las Vegas and several other venues. Alvin had played with Ory on an earlier video today that I was listening to. The rest of my reply is correct. I wanted to share my personal experience listening to Ory. I listened to his recordings with Jelly's Red Hot Peppers, Armstrong's Hot 5 & Hot 7, etc. Live, Kid Ory was magnificant
The bass player is my great, great uncle William Enos Girsback ... better known as Squire Gersh.

yes, just being old and having played with Satchmo doesn't make him a great musician. My favorite trad. Jazz tb player is certainly George Brunies.

Kid Ory is great and not just because he's old because he was not afriad to try new things
