Everybodys an expert ...Look guys you do what you want at your house and let everyone else do what they want at theres ok .. that way we all meet up at the track and see who's does what to who, this way we filter out the wannabees from the those who Can club and for god sakes fellas can't we just all getalong .....LMAO for 1320ft
I like your set up. It sounds and runs good when you add your headers and exhaust. Also have the 800 cfm carb. Would recommend using a higher flowing air filter than the edelbrock 14x3.
Surely it would have been a good idea to wear ear defenders, even for the short amount of time the engine was run for.. eek that was loud, but I guess your deaf already old timer, eh?! :)
I was wrong, and it's not the first time. And no disrespect I love the mouse motor. If you know the engine was built right why start it at all until it goes in the car. When I build a engine it gets a min. Of 35 min run time on a engine run stand. The cam is broke- in unless roller. Cooling is check, oil pressure. When it goes out the door I no for sure the motor was right and leak free. Anyway I am glad it all work out for you.
Why start it with no exhaust? Even if you have oil pressure you couldn't hear a strange noise if your life depended on it! If that's a new cam you should be breaking it in. If I was a betting man I would give that motor 90 days before it takes a dump. When you spend that kind of money have someone that knows what there doing. Food for thought.
@paintonmyhands You should probably read the other comments before posting. A) It was impractical to mount the side mount headers and side pipes to the motor. B) Most articles out there show that studies have proven that they whole thing about bending valves when cool air is drawn in the exhaust ports is just a myth. C) Roller cam, not flat tappet... no break in. D) You lose your bet, motor has 2000 miles, 15 1/4mi passes, and almost 2 years of use with no issues. Runs beautiful. Thanks!
@rmryder88 nice motor, but the part about bending valves being a myth. Well thats wrong because i bent a valve in my 327 when my header popped off on the way home from work. "think someone was playin a joke by losening the header bolts" but nobody owned upto it. Anywho, i got rid of it after that. was very sad face.
@Rhage73 i had someone doing that to mine her name was 383 got some header lock bolts and ive not had a problem with bolts loosing up sense but it did blow the exhaust gasket clean out driving to my friends house and now i have a nice hollow sound from the driverside exhaust (the one that blew out) havnt figured it out yet valves are all adjusted correctly but one day ill get around to pullin the head off to put new ones on and ill find out then
Forgot to mention compression ratio. It is in the 9.7:1 range. Again, thanks for any input you might have on the Edelbrock 800 cfm carb to be possibly matched with the new SBC Stroker Vortec (1 pc rear main seal).
@Querencias7 800cfm is a lot, but if you got it cheap you might as well try it. Like you said a good tuner can probably tweak to work with your set up, but Im no carb expert either so I cant promise that. Theres a formula to determine to max cfm required for your set up, I dont remember it, but I found this online and I think its the right one... for a street/strip carb: CFM= Max RPM x CID / 3456, so in my case my redline is 6000x383/3456 = 665cfm, which is why I went with a 650.
@Querencias7 ... I also went with the Edelbrock Thunder Series AVS, but like i said the 650 size. Im right on the border of needing more though. So, opposite of what you were planning, me and a tuner tweaked the needles and accelerator pump to get a little more flow from it and get it where it needed to be for my application. Either way, I think 800cfm is definitely big for what your looking for. For reference there is also a formula for Street ( .85xRPMxCID/3456) and Race (1.1xRPMxCID/3456)
Ryder, totally agree w/your carb CFM observation in that bigger is not always better. Do you think that an Edelbrock AVS 800 cfm (known as 'Thunder Series', P/N 18134) could work...or rather, be adjusted enough to work well on a new 383 Stroker SBC Vortec? My Chevelle will be more street than strip & the reason I got this carb is that it was almost 50% off, almost new. I'm no carb expert but was told a good carb man can adapt both machines properly: jets, mix, timing, etc. Thx in advance!
@Crimsontide798 It's gotta be bored .30 or .40 and yes it is true. as long as your crank fits the 350 block. I had my .30 over "stock" 350 built into a 383 2 years ago. I havent installed mine yet. Also have a 400 trannsmission with a shift kit in it also brand new. I'm excited to see what my lil El Camino will do.
@nathanlorimer hmm interesting. I get a very quick hesitation when I go wide open throttle sometimes, and were thinking its because the carb cant keep up with the sudden blast. I adjusted the metering rods, the power piston springs, and the accelerator pump, but its still there. Maybe a 750 would satisfy the motor a little better... everyone I talked to though recommended a 650 for primarily street application, and 750 for primarily strip...
@Querencias7 haha thanks man! Carb is a 650cfm. Using some calculation I cant remember we determined the optimal CFM the motor would need. Too often people get huge carbs that just arent necessary.
@mkubiak67. If you actually research it, that's more or less been proven a myth. However, if you're running your motor continuously for a long enough period to really get the exhaust valves hot enough and then suddenly shut it off, its believed cold air will backdraft into the exhaust ports and warp the valves...but again even this is unlikely. Regardless, we ran it for like 30secs lol.
@rmryder88 wow. why would anybody in their right mind run a new engine without a exhaust header at least to PULL THE EXHAUST GASES AND HEAT AWAY FROM THE HEAD???
@jeflagoon Yeah, that was the builders plan. Hes REAL old school lol. Hes been building performance motors since the 50s... He feels the temp of each cylinders output and judges if theyre firing equally.
I hate stupid people too, thats why I'd prefer you not leaving a comment. First off, this wasn't my idea, the engine builder chose to do it, and he's been building high performance motors for about 60 years now. Second, I didn't have the headers yet to put on. Third, the plug wires were an old set he uses just on motors hes working on... so who cares what happens to them in the 30secs we ran the thing. Not knowing what you are talking about makes YOU look stupid.
can anny body on here tell me how good of a combo this would be for an engine build. 351W with AFR 185 heads with 58 cc chamber, edelbrock rolling thunder 573/582 hdy flat tappet roller cam, edelbrock rpm air gap manifold, hooker header's, 750 double pump carb, flat top pistons that make's 10.5:1 compression with the heads im going to use, please let me now what ya's think, please no smartass chevy build would be better comments keep those to yourself.
@Chevypower265. Thanks, but if you read any actual articles or talk to a reputable engine builder youll see that bending valves story is an old myth. Had he run it around town and got the motor going hard to where the valves were extremely hot, then just shut it down, u may suck in some colder air and warp a valve...but even that is HIGHLY UNLIKELY. We ran it briefly just to check each cylinder temp. This guys been building race motors for over 60yrs, he wouldn't do anything to harm it.
I've read articles and I agree with you. I was mostly just messing with you to see if you'd reply to me or not. I myself have built engines and I've seen some started like that and learned very quickly about that..lol. And honestly I'm in the ASE program now, just so I'll be certified and I'm gonna use this to get my Instructor going..lol. There was a guy just the other day saying that headers alone give you more HP and we all know the truth with that!
@Chevypower265 lol alright. I wasnt sure, you can never tell...some people have posted that crap and believe it. The headers are on now anyways....custom stainless steel side headers into 4" stainless steel side pipes.
Hopefully within a few weeks Ill have a video up of the first start up in the car!
@rmryder88 Nah, I'm not that bad. But I have seen it posted too! lol. Sounds like a nice setup! Whats it in? I look forward to the video! And you should check out the videos of my truck and I'll put up a picture of the engine now as my background..lol.
@firefighterkec8211 its a hydraulic roller cam, it doesn't need a "break in" period like a flat tappet cam does. Just needs to be driven easy for the first couple hundred miles.
Plus, he ran it for 20secs and barely ran it.
The guy that built it has been building race engines for about 60years now, so if he thinks its okay Im pretty confident it is. I sure dont have the knowledge or experience to question him.
@rmryder88 well you have a roller cam so it dont matter but if you didnt a new cam needs to run for 20 min for the break in time for your first start up ... or you start burning lobes off and the cam wont last ...i had to learn the hard way ...but it sounds good
Everybodys an expert ...Look guys you do what you want at your house and let everyone else do what they want at theres ok .. that way we all meet up at the track and see who's does what to who, this way we filter out the wannabees from the those who Can club and for god sakes fellas can't we just all getalong .....LMAO for 1320ft
