I like SSTC more than spark gap coils. They are loud, but have more power. SSTC is somewhat quiet and has arcs that can turn into arcs if the topload has something to discharge on.

The skin effect when pertaining to Tesla coils is a misnomer,RF currents will flow through nerves and blood veins and with high power coils the levels are high enough to possibly kill! Ask any expert coiler with a multi kiloWatt coil if they're willing to draw a ark to themselves without a Faraday cage or something on there fingertips to divert the arc to ground.If they are sane and don't have a death wish they will say no!

Thats not entirely true, depends on the size of the coil and how your grounded. the wile the "skin effect" can protect your nervous system, it wont protect you from RF burns and plasma ark burn's. (theres a reason people wear chainmail and wire caged helmet's when working with larger coils).
